College Round Up

Saint John's packed them in to win the seven-team Gale Woods Invitational September 28 in Minnetrista taking the top five spots to score 15 points, followed by St. Thomas (53), Gustavus Adolphus (74) and Carleton (122). Senior Matt Scherber  led the way with a time of 26:38, followed by juniors John Subialka (26:48) and Willie Versen (27:09). Freshman Thomas Feichtinger (27:18) and junior Connor Gjevre (27:28) claimed fourth and fifth, respectively. The Johnnies' top eight runners all finished inside of 28 minutes.  Not all of the teams ran their full squads, including St. Thomas who did not run its top four runners. Full results are HERE.

It will be a busy homecoming weekend at Hamline with volleyball, the homecoming football game, and women's soccer.  Add to that the Hamliine sports Hall of Fame induction of four new members including Jeff Lander(1979), an All American in track; and Teresa Olsen McGrath(2001) who was a two sport standout in soccer and track.

Down Snelling Avenue a bit, the Macalester College M Club Hall of Fame will also welcome four new members.  Included in the group are two, two-sport stars:  David Fenn(1977), soccer and track; and Brian Nichols(1960).  In addition the school will honor the 1959 track team that began a streak of eleven straight MIAC conference championships that year.

Also in the honors department, Gustavus sophomore Caitlin Fermoyle was named the school's female athlete of the month for September.

Junior Micheale Tesema  ran a personal best finishing ninth in 25:20 for 8K and lead the Augsburg's men's  team to a ninth place finish among Division III schools at the Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem, OR Saturday afternoon.

Other notable performances for Augsburg included senior Brian Byrnes,  who clocked a season best time of 27:41, a two minute improvement from his performance at the St. Olaf Invite earlier this season. Sophomore Ahmed Nur  also ran a season best of 27:51, while teammate Luke Iverson, a sophomore,  finished in 27:58. Freshman Zach Richards  rounded out the Augsburg top five, running a season best time of 28:31.

Sophomore Eric Sanchez and freshman Nathan Rue both had season bests of 29:00 and 28:48, respectively.

For the Augsburg women,  junior Lauren Rice ran a PR of 18:19 and placed in fifth overall to lead the women's team to an eight place finish. As a team, the Auggies finished in eighth place among NCAA Division III teams competing in the event. A total of 39 teams competed at the event, which featured nine NCAA Division I and II team in the field. She was the top Division III runner in the meet, which also included participants from Divisions I and II.

Freshman Mary Klecker (19:29) was  in 67th; sophomore Kayla Roberge (19:30) finished 69th.  Senior Haley Diem (21:43) and junior Cate Fritz (24:25.) rounded out the Augsburg top five. Full results of both races are HERE.

St Mary's Katie Stolz ran a season-best 6K of 24:14 to help the SMU women place third at the SMU No-Limit Invitational last Friday. SMU sophomore Aaron Haley ran 26:52 to lead a 1-2-3 Cardinal finish and propel the men to the team title.

Allie Thiel (25:01),  Clare Siska (25:17), Katherine Mockler (25:36) and Kristen Thelen (25:46) rounded out the SMU women's top five. Peter Borash (27:00), and Jake Traxler(27:08)  completing the Cardinal men's trifecta. John Soucheray (28:05) and Jase Pater (28:25) were the rest of SMU's top five finishers.
