Star-Trib: Another Runner Attacked in St. Paul

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported today that a second female runner was assaulted near Lake Phalen.

According to the story, HERE, on Monday a woman running along the lake was knocked to the ground, hit repeatedly in the face, and had her clothing grabbed at before the lone assailant fled at the approach of witnesses.

The incident may be part of a series of assaults around lake Phalen, according to the Paul Walsh story. On March 11, a woman jogging around the lake was assaulted by two men who struck her in the head, pushed her to the ground, kicked her, and stole her iPod.

Other assaults have been reported in the area in recent months.

Vega Wins Georgia Half (or Not) in 1:06:00

If you're confused about what place Antonio Vega took in Sunday's ING Georgia Half Marathon, well, you're not alone.

The Golden Gopher alum himself, who knows he clocked 1:06:00 for the 13.1 mile event on a windy, 40-degree Atlanta day, is waiting to learn whether he was the race's runner-up or champion. Vega initially thought he finished second to Kenyan Patrick Cheruiyot, whom early reports had winning in 1:05:18.

The Running USA Wire, HERE, reported Cheruiyot the winner on Sunday night, although complete results apparently weren't yet available.

When complete results from the race finally appeared on the race's web-site, HERE, during the day Monday, however, Vega was listed as the champion.

Team USA Minnesota president Pat Goodwin told Down the Backstretch that she is trying to get to the bottom of the issue of whether a timing mistake vaulted Vega one spot too high in the results or if, perhaps, Cheruiyot was disqualified.

When Vega and Goodwin know the full story, we'll let DtB readers know, too.

PRs Abound at Stanford Invite

The main buzz from the weekend centers on Garrett and Elliott Heath both running 13:42 for 5000 meters at Friday night's Stanford Invitational. Thanks to the good folks at Flotrack, you can watch the race itself and then hear what Garrett and Elliott have to say about the results.

We've also included the post-race interview with former Golden Gopher and Team USA Minnesotan Andrew Carlson who finished 4th in the Stanford 10,000m in a PR 28:25.86.

Vega to Race ING Georgia Half Marathon

In a return to a race distance that has treated him well, Team USA Minnesota's Antonio Vega will compete in Sunday's third annual ING Georgia Half Marathon.

Vega (pictured), the former University of Minnesota all-American, made his debut in the distance last July at the New York City Half Marathon, where he ran 1:04:26 for 11th place against a world-class field.

In January, he finished seventh at the USA Half Marathon Championships in Houston, clocking a PR 1:02:55.

Most recently, Vega finished 20th at the USA 15K Championships in mid-March with a 44:45 clocking. Prior to that he was a USA team member and fourth place finisher at the NACAC Cross Country Championships. He earned his way into that race thanks to a 15th-place finish at the USA Cross Country Championships in February.

The ING Georgia Half Marathon, has been a regular stop for Team USA Minnesotans in its three years of existence. In 2007, Team USA's Chris Lundstrom was the runner-up in the race, running 1:06:17. Last year, Lundstrom was 6th in 1:09:44.

Outdoor track is underway and top-notch distance runners from around the country know the best venue to chase a fast time: Stanford University. Minnesotans like Oklahoma State’s John Stublaski, Georgetown’s T.C. Lumbar and Gopher alum Andrew Carlson will all compete there on Friday.

Two other runners won’t have to travel as far -- Stanford’s own all-American brothers Garrett and Elliott Heath will bring their sub-14 minute 5k P.R.’s to the home track and compete against each other in the fastest section of the 5000 meters.

So, we ask you ...

Yes/No: Will Elliott Heath beat older brother Garrett in the Stanford Invite 5000m?

Note: Garrett Heath is an 8-time All-American at Stanford and ran on their 2006 National Champion Distance Medley squad. The elder Heath is a senior with lifetime bests of 13:56.40 for 5k and 3:39.96 for 1500. Elliott Heath is sophomore coming off a 3rd place finish at NCAA indoors in the 3000. Elliott’s 5k P.R. is 13:59.12.

Both attended Winona Senior High School with Garrett dominating his era with multiple state titles each in the 1600m, 3200m, Cross Country and Nordic Skiing. Elliott is the all-time state record holder in the 2 mile by virtue of his stunning 8:46.12 in 2007.

To play our game, simply type "yes" or "no" into the subject line of an e-mail and send it to us at DtBFantasy [AT] gmail [DOT] com before 10:00 p.m. Friday, March 27. Please put your answer in the subject line of the e-mail and make sure your full name appears somewhere in the e-mail. We will continue to offer a bonus for participants making their debut in Yes/No - a correct answer will be worth two points for any first-time players.

My Answer: Yes.

Last week 10 contestants answered correctly with "yes" when asked the question “Will the combined total of men breaking 25:00 and women breaking 30:00 at the Human Race 8K on Sunday be 13 or more?” Kyle Serreyn has taken over as the sole leader in the Yes/No contest. There are 4 contestants hot on his heels in second place.

You can find the full leaderboard HERE.

Good luck and thanks for playing Yes/No on DtB.

Yetzer, Schmidt Earn Big Ten Honors

Gopher tracksters Elizabeth Yetzer and Kari Schmidt earned the initial Big Ten Big Ten Athlete of the Week awards of the 2009 outdoor season, the school announced.

Yetzer, a sophomore from Lakeville, won both the 800 meters and 1,500 meters at the University of South Florida’s Bulls Invitational to capture Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week honors. She clocked 4:25.35 in the 1500m, an NCAA Midwest Region qualifying time. Yetzer ran 2:10.77 to win the 800 meters.

Schmidt, a senior from Lindstrom, was named the Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Week. She won the Bull's Invite hammer throw with a toss of 173-4, a personal best and the ninth-best throw in school history. Schmidt also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 47-11.

The awards are the first career weekly Conference honors for both Gopher athletes.

USA Masters Indoor Report:
Weddle Wins, Early Miss Trips Langenfeld

Tom Langenfeld, USATF-Minnesota's Masters Track and Field Chair, just sent us a report on the Minnesotans, himself included, in action at the USA Masters Indoor Championships in Landover, Maryland last weekend.

Here's some of what Langenfeld offered about his Minnesota teammates:

"It was Thom Weddle’s weekend — first in the M70 3000m (Friday), second in the Mile (Saturday) and second or third in the 800 on Sunday. (He’s listed second in the posted 800 results, but an Internet report has him third.)

"Jim Schoffman took sixth in the M55 400 and eighth in the 800, both very tough fields. He also moved down into a younger age group to run legs on the Mass Velocity TC medal-winning M40-49 4X40 and 4X800 relay teams.

"Mike Moser was the oldest competitor in the M55 pentathlon by four years and ran into a loaded field. He finished fifth there, but contributed to medal-winning performances in the M50-59 ad-hoc, non-club 4X400 and 4X800 relays."

Tom Langenfeld himself, as we previewed HERE, got the battle he expected in the M70 high jump. The 73-year-old who has won 29 USA Masters high jump titles in his career finished second to 70-year-old Emil Pawlik in the event in Landover.

Both cleared 4-7, but Pawlik won on misses.

"We both got over the winning height -- 4-7 -- on first attempts and missed all three at 4-9," Langenfeld explained. "But I had one careless miss at a lower height. That cost me a chance to get him in a jump-off (in the faint hope that he might finally succumb to exhaustion after already winning the pentathlon with a world-record performance on Friday, and winning the long jump and high hurdles and finishing second in the 60m on Saturday)."

Going into the meet, Langenfeld had been unbeaten in the high jump in his last fourteen consecutive USA Master Championships -- indoors and outdoors. The USA Master Hall of Famer is already looking forward to this summer's USA Masters Outdoor Championships in Oshkosh, Wisconsin for a rematch with Pawlik.

Langenfeld has won high jump titles in eight consecutive USA Masters Outdoor meets, as well as 10 of the last eleven.

Full ... Filling ... and Wide-Open

That's the entry status for three upcoming races hosted by the two largest running event organizers in Minnesota.

The William A. Irvin 5K, held the night before Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, is now full and closed to registration. Twin Cities Marathon's TC 1 Mile, scheduled for May 7, is now more than half-full. Grandma's Marathon, slated for June 20, still has 2000 starting-line spots still available.

William A. Irvin 5K ... reached its capacity of 1500 runners yesterday, race officials announced. Grandma's organizers increased the field size by 300 runners to 1500 for this year's event. Officials noted that entries are still available for their April 18, Fitger's 5K race in Duluth.

TC 1 Mile ... is more than half-full, according to race organizers. The event, which will be capped at 3200 participants in its eight separate races, is the USA Road Mile Championship for men and women and a USATF - Minnesota Team Circuit event.

Grandma's Marathon ... is still 2000 runners shy of its limit of 9500 participants. Last year at this time, less than 300 entries remained for the event, which filled in early April. Grandma's Marathon has reached its capacity in each of the last 14 years.

TCRC Upsets Defending Circuit Champs

One race does not a Team Circuit make.

Still, TC Running Company's wins in the Team Circuit opener on Sunday suggest 2009 could be a compelling year in the battle for team pavement prowess. TCRC squads beat Run N Fun, the defending men's and women's open division champs.

The TCRC men edged RNF by three seconds at the St. Patrick's Day Human Race 8K on Sunday. The TCRC women outran the RNF women by more than a minute for their win.

Circuit results can be found HERE.

Last year, the RNF men outscored runners-up TCRC 125-115 for the Team Circuit title. The RNF women out-paced TCRC 107-83 in 2008.

The RNF men have won at least a share of five of the last six Circuit titles. They won outright in 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2008, and shared the crown with Runners Edge in 2004. The RNF women will have won the last three Circuit titles.

Josh Metcalf led the way for TCRC, finishing 6th overall in 24:54. The Eden Prairie-based squad packed its five scorers within 40 seconds of Metcalf. Defending Human Race men's champ Jeremy Polson led RNF with a 3rd place individual finish in 24:30.

Jenna Boren, the Human Race women's titlist, paced TCRC with a 27:34 clocking. While the total-time scoring made it a comfortable win for TCRC's women, they only edged RNF 27-28 in the competition using "dual meet" scoring.

Former Team USA Minnesotan Brad Lowery, representing the Prairie Striders, won the individual title at Human Race, edging former Carleton College all-American Matt Hooley 24:19 to 24:23.

Full individual results from the Human Race can be found HERE.

The next fixture on the Team Circuit is the Get in Gear 10K on April 25.

Multi-Eventer Roehrig Back in Uniform

University of Minnesota multi-event star Liz Roehrig is back in her Gopher uniform.

The fifth-year senior from Chilton, Wisconsin competed in the high jump, javelin throw, and 4 x 400 meter relay at the team's spring break meet on Friday held at the University of South Florida.

The six-time Big Ten multi-event champion won the high jump competition with a clearance of 5-8 3/4. She also finished 8th in the javelin throw with a toss of 116-6 and helped the Minnesota "B" squad to 5th in the relay.

Find full results from the meet HERE.

Roehrig (pictured) had used up her indoor eligibility prior to the start of the 2009 season, but still has one outdoor season remaining after an ankle injury in 2007 prompted her take a "medical redshirt" for that season.

Roehrig is a two-time all-American in the heptathlon outdoors and was the runner-up in the event at the NCAA Championships last year. Roehrig finished 5th at last summer's Olympic Trials heptathlon.

Roehrig holds five Gopher school records: the indoor pentathlon at 4,218 points, the heptathlon at 5,855) points, the indoor high jump at 5-10 1/2 , the outdoor high jump at 6-0, and the outdoor long jump at 21-1 1/4.

Yes/No:
Answer: Yes ... more than 13 men and women broke 25:00 and 30:00 at the Human Race.
Summit Avenue in St. Paul will be filled with runners on March 22nd as the USATF Team Circuit kicks off the Minnesota racing season. The Human Race is also designated as the USATF-Minnesota 8K Championship. This fast course is an early test for all the hard-core runners who trained through the long Minnesota winter. This week, Yes/No asks you to predict just how many of these die-hards are ready to run fast this weekend.

Yes/No: Will the combined total of men breaking 25:00 and women breaking 30:00 at the Human Race 8K on Sunday be 13 or more?

Note: From 2005 – 2008, an average of 8.5 men have broken 25:00 at the Human Race 8K --including regular Yes/No contestant Pete Gilman who has run sub 25 each year! During the same period, an average of 8 women have broken 30:00. The weather always plays a major role in trying to run a fast time in March. The early weather reports predict temperatures around 50 and a bit breezy (subject to change of course).

To play our game, simply type "yes" or "no" into the subject line of an e-mail and send it to us at DtBFantasy [AT] gmail [DOT] com before 12:00 p.m. Sunday, March 22. My Answer: No.

Kyle Serreyn and I (Doug Cowles) are currently tied for the year-long lead in Yes/No with 6 points each. You can find the full leaderboard HERE.

You can find the DtB's Pick Ten leaderboard HERE, where Mick Hondo leads Toby Hatlevig by a single point in the competition.

USATF-Minn. Team Circuit Kicks-Off Sunday

Many of the region’s best runners will toe the line on Summit Avenue this Sunday to kick off the 2009 USATF Minnesota Team Circuit. The Human Race 8K is the first event in the nine race series which continues through the spring and summer, concluding with the City of Lakes 25K on September 13. As the traditional start of the new racing season, The Human Race is the first opportunity for many runners to get a look at the competition that they will be facing in the coming months.

Run N Fun has to be considered the team to beat in the Team Circuit open divisions. The women’s squad has taken the team championship for three consecutive years, while the men’s team has won the past two. On the men’s side, Run N Fun could face a challenge from Collegeville, who won last fall’s Cross Country Circuit and have added a number of talented athletes in recent years. Craig Yotter – USATF Minnesota’s Managing Director – notes that TC Running Company has also been adding depth to their roster and could be a significant factor in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

Team Circuit Scorekeeper Joe Papin sees Run N Fun as a heavy favorite for the season titles, but notes that a number of other squads could challenge in individual races. “Overall, I see this year as an opportunity for several teams to re-create themselves on the road and hopefully one or two can find opportunities to upset the defending champs... I just don't see it happening often enough to produce a true competition for first place,” said Papin. He stressed that depth and durability can be as important as front-running talent in the six-month long circuit.

Look for a strong showing from TC Running Company in the men’s masters and grand masters divisions. The Eden Prairie based squad won the masters title last year and have a number of athletes who have moved into the grand masters ranks. Run N Fun and the Molar Milers should also be stong in both divisions, having shared the grand masters title in 2008.

The St. Cloud River Runners captured the women’s masters and grand masters titles last season. They should be challenged again by Run N Fun and Team Unattached in masters and by MDRA and Prairie Striders in grand masters.

The Human Race 8K begins at 1:20 on Sunday afternoon, starting near the corner of Summit and Cleveland Avenues.

"Youngsters" to Challenge Langenfeld

You might expect life to be easy for a Hall of Fame athlete with a couple dozen USA titles to his credit: every day warmed by the glory of accomplishments; every competition an opportunity for yet another victory lap.

Not so for Minnesota's masters high jump superstar Tom Langenfeld, a 29-time USA Master high jump champion and a recent inductee into the USA Track and Field Masters Hall of Fame. Entering this weekend's USA Masters Indoor Championships in Landover, Maryland, the 73-year-old Edina resident faces a stiff challenge from some "youngsters" just entering his M70 age-group.

Langenfeld, who won high jump title #28 at last year's USA Indoor meet with a 4-7 clearance and earned victory #29 outdoors at 4-5, faces strong, new company this year. 70-year-old Emil Pawlik of Texas is entered in the competition with a 5-0 seed. Joining him is another newbie-septuagenarian Gerald Counihan of New York, whom Langenfeld expects to challenge as well.

"Pawlik is indeed a formidable competitor — an exceptional multi-eventer who started out as a high jumper," Langenfeld told DtB. "He ranked No. 1 nationally in the indoor M65 high jump the past two years. Earlier he won world M60 championships in the high jump and decathlon. He and another former indoor champ, Jerry Counihan, are 3½ years younger than I am, with both turning 70 this January. That means that they’ve once again moved into my age group a year and a half before I could escape to the next group."

Still, Langenfeld has had success against his spry rivals when they've found themselves in the same competition before.

"I managed to beat both of them indoors in Boston (barely) after they turned 65 five years ago," Langenfeld recounted, "and I beat Pawlik outdoors in Decatur (barely) later that year (Counihan opting to focus on the pole vault there). But Pawlik has generally jumped an inch or two higher than I have when we’ve jumped together in different age groups since I turned 70. I’ve had a slight edge on Counihan in recent times, though we’ve split about evenly over the years, and he looked better than I did in Boston last year. Jerry Sullivan, another former national age group champ, will also be in the mix. So it should be interesting."

The M70 high jump takes place Sunday morning. Among other Minnesotans competing at the meet are Thom Weddle, a distance runner in the M70 age-group and Mike Moser, an M55 multi-eventer.

Dorniden, Mead Named Athletes of the Month

USA Track & Field - Minnesota named Heather Dorniden and Hassan Mead its Athletes of the Month for March 2009.

Dorniden, a University of Minnesota senior, was honored for winning the 600 meter and mile events at last month’s Big Ten Indoor Championships. The Rosemount High School graduate set a meet record in the 600m with her 1:27.78 clocking. She ran 4:43.71 in the mile.

Mead, a Golden Gopher sophomore, was recognized for his double win at the Big Ten Championships. The Minneapolis South alum won the 3000 and 5000 meter races at the meet. The defending Big Ten cross country champ clocked 8:02.61 in the 3000m and 13:58.16 in the 5000m.

USA Track & Field Minnesota selects Athletes of the Month to honor excellence in track and field and its related sports in Minnesota.

Sub-1:06:00 for Kara Goucher in Lisbon?

Can Kara Goucher run under sixty-six minutes at the Lisbon Half Marathon this Sunday in Portugal?

That's 5:02 miles ... a baker's dozen of them!

Goucher's coach Alberto Salazar thinks so. He told the Portland Oregonian as much, HERE, in a story published this morning. The women's record on the course is 1:05:44 by Kenya's Susan Chepkemei, set in 2001.

Salazar-coached runners have been on a roll recently -- Galen Rupp just won three events at the NCAA Indoor Championships, leading the University of Oregon to a team title, and Amy Yoder Begley won USA titles at 3000 meters indoors and 15K on the roads in the past two weeks.

Goucher is running the Lisbon Half as part of her preparation for April's Boston Marathon.

TC 1 Mile, Irvin 5K Registration Opens

Two of the shorter races hosted by Minnesota's biggest running events are gearing up.

Registration for the Medtronic TC 1 Mile opened on Friday. The event, scheduled for Thursday night, May 7, is the richest road mile in the United States, offering $22,000 in prize money, plus a $10,000 "bounty," if the winning male breaks 4:00 or the winning female breaks 4:28. The event will serve as the USA Road Mile Championship for men and women as well as an event on the USA Track and Field - Minnesota Team Circuit.

On-line-only registration for the event is HERE.

Sign-up for the William A. Irvin 5K in Duluth opens tomorrow -- actually a minute after midnight "tonight." The race takes place Friday night, June 19th outside the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center and is part of a weekend's worth of races and events tied to the 33rd-annual Grandma's Marathon.

Last year, registration for the Irvin closed in two days, although 300 spots in the race have been added this year for a limit of 1200 entrants.

On-line-only registration for the event is HERE.

McGregor Runner-Up Again at USA 15K

A familiar nemesis kept Team USA Minnesota's Katie McGregor from winning that elusive USA 15K title.

Amy Yoder Begley pulled away from McGregor (pictured) and teammate Emily Brown in the race's final strides to win the USA 15K Championship hosted by the Gate River Run in Jacksonville. Florida on Saturday.

Yoder Begley clocked 49:51 for the win. McGregor ran 49:57 for second. Brown, the USA Cross Country champion, ran 50:03 for third.

Yoder Begley, of course, finished third in the Olympic Trials 10,000 meters last summer, speeding to an improbable Olympic Games-qualifying time en route. McGregor finished 4th in the event, narrowly missing the Games for a second straight time.

McGregor, who has earned USA titles twice at 10K on the road, at 10,000m on the track, and at 25K has been the USA 15K runner-up two years in a row.

"The race was strategic, but I like to keep it honest so I was up there pushing the pace," McGregor, said in a Team USA Minnesota media release. "I am happy with it although one of these years I'd like to take home the win. It was nice having my teammate Emily up there with me throughout the race."

Brown, who made her 15k championship debut with the race, was not displeased with her finish.

"I was real happy with this race and to be in the leading pack with such decorated competition," the former Golden Gopher said. "I came to Jacksonville to run 50 flat and ran 50:06. I focused on holding on as long as possible. I'm pleased with my third place finish."

Kristen Nicolini Lehmkuhle finished in 14th place in 52:14, Meghan Armstrong took 15th place in 52:35, and Michelle Lilienthal was 21st in 53:32, all represent Team USA Minnesota. Katie Koski of Duluth finished 40th in 57:02.

Lehmkuhle 8th, Carlson 9th ... Team USA Minnesota's Jason Lehmkuhle edged former teammate Andrew Carlson, the defending USA 15K champion, for 8th place. Lehmkuhle clocked a PR 44:09; Carlson ran 44:11.

Anthony Famiglietti won the race in 43:36.

Other men's notables included: Team USA's Josh Moen, 14th in 44:34; Team USA's Matt Gabrielson, 16th in 44:36; Team USA's Antonio Vega, 20th in 44:45; former Stillwater star Luke Watson, 34th in 46:20; Team USA's Chris Lundstrom, 37th in 46:24; former Team USA-er Brad Lowery, 42nd in 46:47; former Golden Gopher Chad Johnson, 43rd in 46:47; and Carleton College alum Matt Hooley, 49th in 47:44.

Minnesotans Aplenty at USA 15K Championship

Minnesotans heading to Florida in March isn't exactly news. It's not a bad way to shorten an endless winter, after all.

Still, the exodus of Minnesota distance runners to the Sunshine State this weekend is rather remarkable. No fewer than 13 Minnesotans -- including 11 members of Team USA Minnesota -- are scheduled to compete in tomorrow's Gate River Run, the USA 15K Championship.

The race features a $65,000 individual prize purse, with the men's and women's champions earning $12,000 each. An equalizer bonus of $5,000 is awarded to the first athlete to cross the finish line, with female elites starting 5 minutes before the men.

In addition, a team competition will award $20,000 in prize money with the top three male and top three female athletes scoring. The first place prize is $6,000 for each male and female team.

Carlson to Defend Title ... Headlining the snowbird contingent is defending men's champion Andrew Carlson. The University of Minnesota alum, who is now based in Arizona, seeks a repeat of last year's breakthrough victory. Carlson was the runner-up recently at the USA Club Cross Country championships.

He'll face competition from 2001 Twin Cities Marathon champ Dan Browne and fellow Olympians Ian Dobson, Anthony Famiglietti and Jorge Torres, as well as reigning TCM champ Fernando Cabada. Team USA Minnesota's Jason Lehmkuhle, making his 2009 racing debut, should challenge as well.

Other top Minnesota men in the field include Team USA Minnesota's Antonio Vega, Matt Gabrielson, Josh Moen, Chris Lundstrom, and Mike Hanlon and Carleton College alum Matt Hooley.

McGregor Seeks 15K Crown ... Team USA Minnesota's Katie McGregor, the women's runner-up at the USA 15K in 2008, returns this year. McGregor, a USA champion at 10,000 meters on the track, at 10K on the roads (twice), and at 25K, has a 15K best of 49:56.

Olympians Amy Yoder Begley, the USA indoor 3000m champ, Elva Dryer, and Amy Rudolph are McGregor's most likely competition, along with teammate Emily Brown, the reigning USA Cross Country champ.

Joining McGregor and Brown, are teammates Kristen Nicolini Lehmkuhle, Meghan Armstrong, and Michelle Lilienthal.
