Chris Lundstrom won the Superior Trail 50K in Lutsen
Saturday, capturing the USA Track & Field Minnesota Ultra Trail
Championship in the process. This is Lundstrom's third consecutive Superior Trail 50K title. His time of 3:50:31 was less than two minutes off the course record of 3:48:54 that he set in 2009.
Unlike last year, when he won the race by nearly 15 minutes,
Lundstrom had company. Samuel Jurek (no relation to legendary
ultrarunner and Proctor native Scott Jurek) of Brighton, Massachusetts finished second in 5:53:29, and Duluth’s Benjamin Cogger finished third in
3:55:01.
In the women’s race, Duluth’s Andrea Ring took the win and
the state title in 5:42:45. She was followed by Eagan’s Kathy Jambor, who also
won the Master women’s race, in 5:49:54. Amy Carolan, of Marine on St. Croix,
finished third in 5:53:42.
The fast times were thanks in part to the disappearance of
snow on the trail just in time for the race. Much of the trail, which runs
north of Duluth, had been hit with a heavy late-spring snowfall, and, according to
race director John Storkamp, the snow finally gave way to mud this week. Complete results for the Superior Trail 50Kand 25K can be
