NCAA National Athletes of the Week

Maggie Ewen

NCAA DIVISION I WOMEN – Maggie Ewen, Arizona State

Junior | Throws
St. Francis, Minnesota
One record down: one more to go.
Maggie Ewen opened her outdoor season in a big way in front of her home crowd at the Baldy Castillo Invitational this past weekend.
Ewen shattered the American collegiate record in the hammer throw with a heave of 72.71m (238-6). Former Southern Illinois standout and two-time NCAA champion DeAnna Price held the previous record with a mark of 72.66m (238-4).
Prior to this past weekend, Ewen’s PR in the event was 70.50m (231-3) that she set at the NCAA West Regional last year.
The next record in Ewen’s sights is the overall collegiate record held by former Georgia standout Jenny Dahlgren (72.94m/239-3). Dahlgren’s record has stood for nearly 10 years.--USTFCCCA

Nancy Hobbs' story on the Chuckanut 50K

Welcome to the World of NCAA Record Keeping, Part II

Track and Field News added this twist to what the criteria can be for accepting a record in this tweet:

best hammer mark ever for American-born collegian: 238-6 (72.71) by Arizona State's Maggie Ewen. Makes her No. 8 on all-time U.S. list.

An addendum to all this is that Ewen was not supposed to compete in the meet. She was supposed to be rested this weekend HERE

Men and Women's Course Records Fall in Hot Dash 10 Mile

Ben Sathre broke the men's course record and Andrea Rediger the women's at the Hot Dash  10 mile in St Paul.

Sathre, 26, the defending men's champion, ran the Mississippi riverfront course which started and finished near Boom Island, in 49:59.  Rediger, 28, clocked 57:24 for the women’s title and event record.

Sathre used the wind and  40 degree temperature to his advantage. “We had a nice tailwind the first half, so I just rolled into a pace and tried to hold it coming back,” Sathre said. “I just had to stay strong coming back into the wind.”

Rediger also got off to a good start, which paid off in the end. “Right away at the half-mile or so, I knew I was in the lead,” Rediger said. “I hit the mile on my target and I felt good from there. My time was a big personal best for me, so I can’t complain about anything.”

Each earned $500.  Full results are HERE

Maggy Ewen PRs at Baldy Castillo Hammer Throw: Welcome to the World of NCAA Record Keeping.

Maggie Ewen set a new PR in the Hammer Throw on her last throw in the competition.  Ewen launched the hammer 72.71 meters/238'6.5".  It was an improvement of more than two meters.  The NCAA record is 72.94meters 239' 4"by Georgia's  Jenny Dahlgren set in 2007
Hammer results HERE.  Women's Outdoor Collegiate records HERE.

Editor's Note: The NCAA does not have an official list of marks that were not set in their NCAA Championship meet. The NCAA Championships record is only the top mark made in the NCAA Championships,  The NCAA does not  keep track of marks made in  all NCAA competition.  T&F News compiles a list of the top marks set in NCAA meets done during the NCAA collegiate season.

This  is similar to the confusion about  MSHSL records.  The Miles List, for example, lists performances from all competitions done during the MSHSL season..  MSHSL accepts some but not others depending on the criteria set up by the MSHSL for what counts and what doesn't.

Any marks made by a MSHSL athlete outside the official HS season is not recognized as a record.  Times set in the increasing number of post season high school meets, for example, are not accepted as a record.

T&F News' Collegiate list, much like the Miles lists for Minnesota HS athletes,  does have an addendum that lists superior marks done on the track circuit outside the NCAA season.

Thus you have this situation where the record listed by the NCAA  for the women's hammer throw is 71.53m/234'8" by Southern Illinois' DeAnna Price, Southern IL set on June 9, 2016 at the NCAA Championships. That was the farthest recorded mark by that any female athlete has thrown in all NCAA Outdoor Championships meets.

Thus Maggie now has a throw better than any women in the NCAA Championships, but slightly shorter than Jenny Dahlgren's mark that is recognized as the longest throw by an NCAA athlete during the NCAA Outdoor season compiled by T&F News.

Hopefully this explains why Arizona State proudly announced that Maggie now has the collegiate record.  Some people would agree with that.  Others would not.  Welcome to the world of collegiate track & field record keeping.

TCM 1988 Women's champion cleared of doping charges 29 years too late

Twin Cities Marathon 1988 Women's champion Ria Van Landeghem has been cleared of doping charges from almost 29 years ago HERE and HERE

Prior to the 1988 TCM Van Landeghem was told she had failed a drug test done in the Olympic lab in Seoul at the request of the Belgian Olympic Committee.  She was sent home and missed her chance to run in the Games.  She protested her innocence and was allowed by TCM organizers to run the marathon here.  She won in 2:28:11, a new course record for women.  Her record lasted until 1996 when Olga Appel set a new record of 2:27:59.

She never gave up on "clearing her name" of the doping charges however.  Nearly 29 years later the BOIC agreed with her and issued a press release absolving her.

The Power of the Mind.

Results suggest that a performance reserve is conserved, involving anaerobic energy contribution, which can be utilised given a belief that the exercise will be sustainable however there is an upper limit to how much deception can be tolerated. These findings have implications for performance enhancement in athletes and for our understanding of the nature of fatigue during high-intensity exercise.

Two Masters Legends Trained in Graveyards

The Wall Street Journal obit on Masters' Marathon legend Ed Whitlock (HERE)  and Athletics Illustrated's (HERE) note that Whitlock often trained in graveyards.  Not uncommon on Masters distance runners.  Anoka's Bill Andberg was nicknamed the Grey Ghost because of the use of similar training grounds.  Andberg bio is HERE.

Whitlock trained in the graveyard because of its proximity of his house.  Andberg did it to avoid harrasing by those who wondered why an "old man" was out running,  and to "get away from dogs."

Another Masters legend, Dr. Alex Ratelle trained at night, after dark, because he didn't want his Edina neighbors seeing him running around the neighborhood in his running gear.

How things have changed.
