Harun Abda Earns Big Ten Track Awards

University of Minnesota junior Harun Abda was named the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year, the conference announced yesterday.

The Fridley High School alumnus was also named the conference's Co-Track Athlete of the Big Ten Championships, sharing that honor with Indiana’s Andrew Bayer.

Abda won individual titles at the Big Ten Championships last weekend in the 400-meters and 600-meters. Abda, in his fist competition at the distance this season, won the 400m in 46.51. He clocked a 1:15.86 for the 600m, a new Big Ten meet and all-time record.

“Awards are well deserved for Harun Abda,” Steve Plasencia, the University of Minnesota head coach, said. “He has not lost a race all season and he has the fastest time in the country (1:46.97) in the 800m. He had a tough weekend doing double duty in the 400m and 600m, but came through in flying colors and has run great 4x400 legs for us. He has had a super indoor season so far and we are excited about having him run at the NCAA Championships next weekend.”

The Big Ten Conference also announced the 2012 All-Big Ten first and second team award winners. Minnesota landed three athletes on the first team list and two on the second team. Named to the first team were Abda, Hassan Mead and Micah Hegerle. Earning a spot on the second team were David Pachuta and Jack Szmanda.

Gophers Ranked #9 ... The University of Minnesota men's team is currently ranked #9 in the latest NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field rankings.

Florida leads the rankings, followed by Arkansas and Texas A&M. The Gophers are the only Big Ten team ranked in the top-10.

Smock Wins USA Title; Gopher Men Second

On a busy weekend of top-flight indoor track and field action, a Minnesotan grabbed the USA triple title while the state's premiere track team fell just short of a fourth-straight Big Ten crown.

Triple Jump Titlist ... Amanda Smock, the reigning USA outdoor triple jump champion, won her first USA Indoor title with a mark of 45-2 1/4 on Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the USA Indoor Championships.

The Melrose native landed the winning jump in the fifth round of competition, taking the lead from Olympian Erica McLain, who had paced the competition at 45-1. Crystal Manning was third at 44-9 1/2.

The win bodes well for Smock, a North Dakota State alumnus, who will likely face similar competition at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in June as she pursues a spot on the Olympic Team.

Other notable Minnesota performances at the meet include Bryan Tolcser's 4th-place finish in the weigh throw with 72-2 1/2, Garrett Heath's 4th-place finish in the men's 1500-meter in 3:49.59, Justin Tyner's 4th-place finish in the 3000m run in 8:11.25, and Jim Dilling's 5th-place result in the high jump at 7-1 3/4.

Find complete USA Indoor results HERE.

Gopher Men Just Miss ... The University of Minnesota men's track team waged a furious, second-day pursuit of a fourth-straight Big Ten indoor title, but fell four points shy of champion Indiana.

Ohio State, Indiana, and the Gophers all worked to close the gap host Nebraska had built in the first day of competition of the two-day meet. After a banner second day, and thanks to Hassan Mead's victory in the 5000m, the penultimate event of the meet, the Gopher were in striking distance of the Huskers going into the 4 x 400m Relay.

By then, however, Indiana's 3-4-5 finish in the 5000m had put the Hoosiers atop the standings.

Minnesota finished 3rd in the 4 x 400 --ahead of the 5th-place Indiana and the 8th-place Cornhuskers -- but their two-day total was still shy of victory. Indiana tallied 104 points; the Gophers scored 100; Nebraska had 99.

Harun Abda won individual titles for the Gophers at 400m and 600m, setting a new Big Ten record in the latter event with 1:15.86. (Minnesota’s Tom Gerding held the old record at 1:16.19.)

Micah Hegerle won the weight throw title with a mark of 70-6 1/2. Hassan Mead's 5000m title in 13:43.13 was paired with a runner-up finish in the 3000m on Friday night.

Women 11th ... The University of Minnesota finished 11th in women's competition with 11 points.

“The team gave a good effort this weekend,” Gopher women's coach Matt Bingle said. “Obviously, we are not where we want to be, but we will learn from our mistakes, get back to work and work on the little things. We will be better in the outdoor season.”

Gopher Men 5th After Day 1 at Big Tens

The three-time defending champion University of Minnesota men's team finds itself in 5th-place after the first day of competition at the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Hosts Nebraska lead with 45 points, followed by Wisconsin (32), Ohio State (27), Indiana (23), and the Gophers (22). Action concludes today.

"We had some good leadership today from Trey Davis and Jack Szmanda," Gopher head coach Steve Plasencia said. "Trey came up with an incredible performance in the shot in a very talented field and Jack set a new lifetime record in the pole vault. We are still in the hunt and will need to score big tomorrow on the track."

Szmanda finished runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 17-5 1/2; Davis finished 4th in the shot put with a mark of 60-6 1/2.

Find a wrap-up of the Gopher men's action HERE. Find first-day results of the meet HERE.

Gopher Women in 11th ... The Minnesota women find themselves at the bottom of the standings after their first day of Big Ten action. Nebraska leads with 45.5 points.

The team scored their single point in the DMR, when the team of Kathryn Ritter, Megan Geyen, Lauren Domski, and Katie Moraczewski edged Wisconsin for 8th-place in 11:36.63.

Yes/No: Smock in Top Three at USA Indoors?

The Indoor Visa Championship Series will culminate with this weekend's USA Indoor Championship in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Many Minnesotans will make the trip, including this incomplete list: Laishema Hampton in the Weight Throw, Samantha Sonnenberg in the pole vault, Jim Dilling in the High Jump, Bryan Tolcser in the Weight Throw, Justin Tyner in the 3000m and Garrett Heath in the 1500m.

We are going to take a closer look at Melrose native Amanda Smock and the triple jump. Smock is the reigning USA Outdoor Champion, and she competed at the World Championship in Daegu in 2011, a breakthrough year for her.

Let us know if you think Smock's hot streak will extend into 2012 by answering this week's question:

Yes/No: Will Amanda Smock finish in the top three in the women's triple jump at the USA Indoor Championship.

Amanda Smock is currently ranked third in the triple jump entries for USA Indoors. Crystal Manning is seeded first with a 45-3 3/4, followed by Tiombre Hurd at 44-8 and then Smock and Erica McClain with 44-6 efforts.

In terms of personal records (indoor and outdoor), Hurd is the American record holder at 47-5 and McClain has jumped 47-0 1/4. Amanda Smock's best jump was last summer when she flew 46-6 1/4.

Amanda Smock has finished in the top six at the USA Indoor and Outdoor Championships ten times in her career. In addition to winning the USA Outdoor championships last year, she placed second at the 2011 USA Indoor Champs. Smock was a three-time D2 National Champion while at North Dakota State.

To play our game, simply type "yes" or "no" into the subject line of an e-mail and send it to us at DtBFantasy [AT] gmail [DOT] com before 7:00 P.M. CDT, Saturday, February 25th. Please put your answers in the subject line of the e-mail and make sure your full name appears somewhere in the e-mail.

My answer: Yes

Last week's question was: Will two or more pole vaulters clear 14-0 or higher at the Parents Day Open on Saturday? The answer was no. Leslie Brost won the event with a vault of 13-9 3/4. Twenty-five people answered correctly this week and the top spot was whittled down to four contestants. Tom Bisel, Dan Vogel, Jim Glazer and Heather Jelen are tied for first with five points.

Gopher Men Seek a Fourth Big Ten Crown

The venue is new, but the goal remains the same for the Gophers.

The University of Minnesota men's track and field team is headed to Lincoln, Nebraska, the newest locale on the conference map, seeking a fourth-straight Big Ten Indoor Track and Field title.

Hosts Nebraska, newcomers to the conference this year, along with Indiana and Ohio State are tabbed as the major challengers to another Gopher win.

The Gopher men, currently ranked #8 in NCAA Division I, hope to put themselves back atop the conference heap after a narrow loss at the 2011 Big Ten Outdoor Championships which snapped a their string of consecutive Big Ten indoor and outdoor track wins at five.

The meet gets underway tomorrow and concludes on Saturday. For the first time in conference history the Big Ten men's and women's championships will be held at one venue.

Last year, the Gopher women finished 3rd at the Big Ten Indoor Championships.

The Gopher men's team will look to mine a lode of points from it's star middle-distance running tandem of Harun Abda and David Pachuta. The Gopher pair are the top-ranked 800-meter runners in the country.

Likewise, veteran distance runner Hassan Mead, will be in the spotlight for the Gophers in the long distance events. Reigning Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Week Micah Hegerle, the top-ranked weight-thrower in the conference, will also play a key role in the title defense.

The Gopher men, however, will be without two-time Big Ten mile champion Ben Blankenship. The Stillwater alum is recovering from a stress fracture to his sacrum.

The Minnesota Daily has a comprehensive preview of the men's and women's meet HERE.

Complete Big Ten performance lists can be found HERE.

Follow the results from Lincoln HERE.

H.S. Girls' All-Time Lists: 100 Meters

It's list time again on Down the Backstretch! It's the time of year when we post the statistical lists compiled by a trio of Minnesota coaches.

Below, you'll find the first installment of the event-by-event Minnesota high school girls' all-time lists compiled by Champlin Park's Kevin Moorhead.
Later today, we'll post the first installment the 2011 and all-time lists produced by St. John's University's Tim Miles and Wayzata High School's Bill Miles.

The girls' lists now managed by Moorhead originated with lists fashioned by the Miles brothers that compiled top girls' performances from 1972 until 1992. Moorhead has brought those lists up-to-date and has added the 4 x800, triple jump and pole vault to the effort.

Moorhead stresses that the lists are "living documents," so he encourages corrections and amendments that come to light thanks to publication. Moorhead can be contacted at:

Hegerle Extends Gopher Weight Mark

University of Minnesota junior Micah Hegerle extended his school weight throw record to 72-0 1/4 with a meet-winning mark at the Snowshoe Open on Friday.

Hegerle bettered his own school record of 71-3 1/2 set a year ago.
The Kassonn-Mantorville alum's toss places him #5 on the NCAA Division I indoor performance list.

He joins Harun Abda (1:46.97) and David Pachuta (1:46.98), who are ranked #1 and #2 in the 800-meters, and Hassan Mead (13;33.42), who is the #5-ranked 5000-meter runner in D1 as NCAA Championship contenders.

Hegerle's effort highlighted the Gopher men's final meet prior to the Big Ten Indoor Championships this weekend.

A wrap of the meet can be found HERE. Results are HERE.

Gopher Women ... The University of Minnesota women tuned-up for Big Ten Championships with the Parents' Day Open on Saturday.
