Gophers Micah Hegerle and Quentin Mege placed sixth and 13th, respectively, in the hammer throw at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday to earn All American honors. John Simons advanced to the finals of the 1500.
Hegerle’s sixth-place finish at nationals earned the senior First Team All-America honors while Hegerle’s top throw of 217'(66.15 meters) marked a lifetime best for the Gopher as well as the second longest throw in Minnesota outdoor history. Mege, who set the school record earlier this season, threw 207'3"(63.18 meters) after battling a broken hand and illness this season to finish as a Second Team All-American.
Simons clocked a personal best of 3:41.73 in Thursday’s 1500 semifinals. That time is the fifth-fastest in school history and earned Simons a bid to Saturday’s finals – the top five finishers from both semifinals earned automatic bids while the next two fastest times (including Simons) also advanced. Simons’ performance ranked sixth in his heat and topped all competitors in the second preliminary race. Simons is the third Gopher to advance in an individual event this season, joining Harun Abda and Travis Burkstrand – both of whom will race in the 800 meter finals on Friday.
The Minnesota 4x400 meter relay team of Abda, Jacob Capek, Goaner Deng and Cameron Boy ran 3:06.91 to finish fourth in its semifinal heat and 15th overall on Thursday in Eugene. Thursday's results by event are HERE.
