On Monday, we learned where the NCAA pollsters ranked the University of Minnesota cross country teams in the Midwest Region.
Yesterday, we learned where the Gophers rank nationally.
The Gopher women will open their season ranked #21 in the NCAA Division I; the Gopher men will start the season ranked #26.
Defending NCAA women's cross country champions Villanova top the pre-season NCAA poll, followed by Florida State and 2008 NCAA champions Washington.
The Gopher women are the top-ranked Big Ten team in the national poll, although #23 Michigan State, #24 Penn State, #26 Wisconsin, #27 Michigan, and #29 Iowa lurk close behind.
Stanford University, thanks in part to Winona High School alumnus Elliott Heath, are the #1-ranked D1 men's team. Defending champion Oklahoma State is ranked #2; Northern Arizona is ranked #3.
The Gophers men are the third-best Big Ten school according to the rankings. Wisconsin is ranked #7 in the poll; Michigan State is ranked #21. Indiana is pegged at #27, one slot behind the Gophers.
