Thorvilson's run is even more remarkable when you consider she was her high school record holder in the 300 hurdles, TJ, and was a member of the dance team. Her distance running career really took off when she went to Arkansas and began putting in the mileage, under the coaching of Kirk Elias.

Mike Reneau is still pretty much of a running novice; his primary sport in high school and college was wrestling. He actually chose a marathon training course because he needed a physical education credit to graduate from college.

Congrats to Reneau. Not sure I'd call him "novice". While he didn't run his first marathon until 2004 - he was a top-10 finisher in State in high school.
