Rob Finnerty, Minnesota's fastest-ever high school miler, got his collegiate career back into the fast lane Saturday with a 5th-place finish at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
Finnerty (pictured, right), who has battled injury since running 4:01.09 for the mile in a post-season meet his senior year in high school, clocked 3:44.53 in the NCAA 1500m final. The Burnsville High School alumnus ran the final 400m of the tactical race in a fleet 54.36.
Read a nice recap of Finnerty's race, HERE, by the Badger sports media department.
"It feels great," Finnerty said in the story. "I didn't think I was going to win it
today with the finish those guys have, but I'm so happy. Fifth at Big
Tens and now fifth at NCAAs."
Finnerty plans to pursue an automatic qualifying mark of 3:39.00 for the Olympic Trials at Wednesday's American Milers Club meet in Indianapolis.
