NOTE: Due to a last minute policy change by the Minnesota State High School League, Down the Backstretch will not be able to provide up-to-the-second live coverage of the MSHSL State Meet today.
Instead, we'll try our best to update you on day's action during this morning's Class AA session. We apologize for the late change in plans ... it was completely beyond our control.

What a bummer. In a sport where limited press coverage is already an issue it's too bad a policy has to be implemented to further discourage interested parties access to live results.
Typical HS League! And of course they aren't providing live results either. Try to keep everyone in the dark for as long as possible. Something they've always been good at.
What's the harm in getting this information out ASAP????
Lost ticket sales??
What a joke.
Readers,
Here are the basics of what happened with DtB at the State Meet today ...
I was told when I arrived this morning that the area in the press box from which I've covered the meet the last three years was no longer open to me. A decision was made that only meet officials could be in the press box area.
Last week, when I paid the $200 rights fee to cover the Class AA sessions live -- yes, one has to pay the MSHSL to cover the meet "live" -- I noted that I was doing so with the understanding that everything would be as before ... and I wasn't told differently until I arrived this morning.
Barred from my usual spot in a small room off the main press box, I covered the meet from the media work room ... which has no view of the last turn/homestretch, has spectators obstructing the view of the finish, and where there's a delay in getting printed results.
It's not exactly the vantage point you'd choose to cover a track meet from ... or be eager to pay $200 for!
So, due to the late change, I had to scrap lap-by-lap updates of the longer races and relays and descriptions of races.
On the other hand, especially for readers not closely following the meet time-table, we got results and updates up in a fairly timely -- if not exactly "live," fashion.
In all, things went a bit better than I would have guessed when the minutes were ticking down to 9:00 a.m. and the start of the meet this morning.
I should add that, aside from the abrupt policy change toward DtB’s coverage, the media folks at the MSHSL were, in the end, very helpful in setting me up in the next-best location and being sympathetic to my concerns about paying for one thing and getting another.
Anyway ... that's probably more detail than most DtB readers will need, but that’s the story from my point of view.
We hope you can join us again tomorrow … We'll be offering the same sort of coverage of the Class AA finals tomorrow morning. DtB will still offer the quickest access to results, since the MSHSL doesn't post them live.
Yours in the sport …
-- Charlie
