28:12.74: Mead Tops Bjorklund's U of M Mark

University of Minnesota senior Hassan Mead erased the oldest mark in the University of Minnesota record book last night with his 28:12.74 clocking in the Payton Jordan Invitational 10,000-meters in Palo Alto, California.

Mead performance eclipsed Garry Bjorklund's 28:24.40 set in 1974.

Mead finished 6th in Section 2 of the 10,000m at Payton Jordan, a meet that gathered many of the country's top collegiate and professional long distance runners.  In the same section of the 10,000m, Team USA Minnesota's Jonathon Grey ran 28:26.44.

Other Minnesota highlights from the meet included Winona native Garrett Heath's 13:27.07 5000m, brother Elliott Heath and Burnsville native Rob Finnerty running 3:41 for 1500m, and Brainerd High School alum Justin Tyner clocking 8:41.63 in the 3000m steeplechase.

In women's competition, Laura Januszewski clocked a 2:04.54 for 800m, Jamie Cheever ran 10:02.16 in the 3000m steeplechase, Carrie Tollefson posted 16:12.64 for 5000m, Katie McGregor clocked 32:37.83 for 10,000m, while Mankato Loyola alum Dani Stack of Iowa State ran 32:51.28.
