Local Shoots Running Times Cover Photo

There are all sorts of local angles in the March issue of Running Times magazine.

As we noted in the previous post, Minnesota masters legend Jared Mondry is profiled in the issue, which is focused on masters running. But that's not all, local photographer Scott Schneider gets the credit for shooting the issue's cover photo of Colleen DeReuck

Schneider caught DeReuck in action at last October's Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, where the ageless 45-year-old attempted to become the oldest USA Women's Marathon champion.

The South Africa native fell just short in her quest, however. Although, De Reuck led the women's race by more than a minute and a half at 20 miles, she was passed by eventual winner Ilsa Paulson on Summit Avenue and finished second in 2:32:37.

Finding his photo on the cover came as a surprise to Schneider, who is well-known locally for his shooting at running events, cycling races, and hockey games.

"I e-mailed a few photos the day after TCM to Running Times and Runner's World but didn't hear anything," Schneider remembered. "Then in early December, Running Times contacted me about photos of Colleen De Reuck. When she was named Female Masters Runner of the Year, they apparently decided to feature her in the magazine though they didn't say anything about the cover. I sent three or four photos and the rest is history, as they say."

Schneider has two photos inside the magazine as well -- another shot of DeReuck and one of Mondry.

The Running Times cover is Schneider's first national magazine cover photo. Prior to it, Schneider's biggest media play came with a photo from the World Championship Snowmobile Derby in Eagle River, Wisconsin for the front page of the Sunday New York Times.

"Interesting, considering I don't particularly like snowmobiling," Schneider admitted.
"I prefer to shoot running, cycling, and hockey though I'm also in it to make money. And, of course, it was the Times."
