Grandma's Past: The 2008 Champions

Concluding our retrospective on Grandma's Marathon champions from the recent past, we give you the champions of 2008:

Mary Akor -- Last year, Akor became only the third woman in history to defend her Grandma's Marathon title, joining three-peater Lorraine Moller and course-record holder Fira Sultanova-Zhdanova. The Nigerian-born American won a wire-to-wire victory in '08, turning a 21-second lead at half-way into a nearly three-minute victory in 2:38:50

Lamech Mokono -- Running with the same race-number -- #6 -- that Wesly Ngetich wore when he won his second Grandma's in 2007, and running with the fallen champion in mind, Mokono won the 2008 Grandma's in his Duluth debut. The Kenyan pulled away near the half-way mark and weathered a late charge from compatriot David Tuwei for a five-second win in 2:13:39.
