Maggie Ewen and Michael Sandle, two of Minnesota's top high school field event stars, have been named Athletes of the Month for May by USA Track and Field Minnesota.
Ewen, a sophomore at St. Francis High School, is honored for breaking the Minnesota all-time high school record in the discus at the Saints Invitational earlier this month. Ewen marked a throw of 165-feet, 9-inches, which bettered Jessica Cagle of Grand Rapids throw of 162-4 from 2008.
Sandle, a senior at Eden Prairie High School, is recognized for his triple jump victory at the Hamline Elite Meet in April. Sandle established a new meet record with a jump of 50-3 1/4 which fell just short of Reondo Davis' 1999 state all-time best of 50-4.
USA Track & Field Minnesota selects Athletes of the Month to honor excellence in track and field and its related sports in Minnesota. USA Track & Field is the governing body of the sport in the United States and the Minnesota Association of USATF sanctions and sponsors track and field, cross country, road racing, and racewalking events for athletes of all ages in the state.
