Gopher Squads Gaining Momentum, Records

With just two weeks remaining until the Big Ten Indoor Championships, the University of Minnesota track and field squads are rounding into late-season form. The Gopher men’s and women’s teams return from competitions last weekend sporting a fistful of NCAA qualifying and school record-setting performances.

The Gopher Women … saw two school records fall at the Iowa State Classic last Saturday.

Heather Dorniden bettered the school record in the mile, winning the event with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:38.80. Dorniden now owns the Minnesota records in the 400 meters, 800 meters and the mile indoors. Jamie Cheever held the existing school record of 4:39.54, set last season.

Amy Laskowske improved her personal best by over 30 seconds to place third in the 5000 meters in a school record time of 16:26.51. Laskowske jumped to the top of the list after clocking the 10th-best time in school history last season. Corinne Nimtz ran 16:30.76 to set the previous record in 2000.

“We had such a great day, it’s hard to put one performance above another,” Minnesota head coach Matt Bingle said in a media release. “It was a great overall team effort over the weekend."

In addition to Dorniden and Laskowske’s standard-setting performances, pole vault star Alicia Rue won her event at the meet, clearing 14-1 1/4. Already the school record-holder at 14-4, Rue won her fourth-straight pole vault competition of the year.

The Gophers young sprint squad continued their rewrite of the team’s top-10 lists. Apple Valley alum Kylie Peterson finished fourth in the 60-meter dash in 7.58 seconds, running the fifth-best time in school history. Nyoka Giles tied the #6 time in Gopher history with her sixth-place showing in 7.60 seconds. Adrienne Thomas placed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.41 seconds, the fourth-best mark in Gopher history.

In the 200 meter competition on Friday night, Giles clocked a personal best time of 24.44 seconds to finish third. The time is the third-fastest in Gopher history. Fellow rookie, Adrienne Thomas ran a time of 24.93 seconds good the eighth-best mark in school history.

The Gopher Men … The men’s team split its squad in order to compete in three meets over the weekend and enjoyed several NCAA-qualifying performances.

Hassan Mead and Chris Rombough both bettered the existing school record in the 3,000 metes at the Washington Husky Classic. Mead clocked a time of 7 minutes, 56.60 seconds, an NCAA provisional mark, which bettered the 7:59.36 mark Rombough ran at the U of M Fieldhouse earlier this season.

Rombough finished with a time of 7:57.58. The meet brought together some of the elite distance runners in the nation. Mead and Rombough finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in their heat of the 3,000 meters.

Matt Fisher traveled to the UW-River Falls Classic and cleared a personal best by nearly two inches in winning the high jump. Fisher notched an NCAA provisional qualifier with a leap of 7 feet, 3 inches; a mark that ties for the third-best jump in school history.

The Gophers competing at the Iowa State Classic were led by thrower Aaron Studt, who landed a personal-best and NCAA provisional mark of 62-1 3/4 in the shot put to place fourth in the event. That mark is the fourth-best in school history. Studt also placed sixth in the weight throw with an effort of 64-8 1/2 inches.

Ibrahim Kabia won the 60-meter dash in a time of 6.67 seconds, just off his school record of 6.63. Kabia ran a personal best time of 21.90 seconds in the 200 meters, the ninth-fastest time in school history. Kabia placed 19th in the event.

Logan Stroman finished second the 600-yard run in 1:11.12.

Many of the top Minnesota collegians will travel south to compete on the lightning-fast, over-sized track at Iowa State this weekend. The University of Minnesota will attempt to show their strength as many top Gophers will be seeking a national qualifying time.

He has career bests of 6.63 (60) and 10.29 (100) and has already run 6.64 and 6.65 in 2009.

In the Circle: Mid-Season Report

Mid-Season Indoor Highlights

Since the last "In the Circle" update we have seen some great performances out of some of Minnesota's finest throwers. Here are some of the highlights ...

Gophers women may not be large in numbers but senior Kari Schmidt and sophomore Hannah Studt are making up for it with some great performances. Kari Schmidt has been a model of consistency in shot put with a season best mark coming at the Minnesota Open on January 17th with a mark of 48-9. That mark currently ranks her 4th in the Big Ten. Sophomore Hannah Studt, sister-in-law of Gopher standout Aaron Studt, has been backing up her title as 2007 Wisconsin Gatorade Athlete of the Year. Her mark of 55-4 1/4 in the weight throw, also at the Minnesota Open, has moved her up to 6th all-time at Minnesota.

Men's coach Lynden Reder says his squad is starting to turn the corner, as evidenced by some great marks at the Nebraska Adidas Invitation in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 31st. Junior Aaron Studt emerged from the weekend with 2 victories and a new personal best. Studt improved his personal best and his provisional qualifying mark in the weight throw to 66-1. Senior Andy Bastain chimed in with a long awaited PR in the weight throw at 63-6 and Trey Davis broke Aaron Studt's freshmen record in the weight throw with a mark of 60-1.

Studt and Bastain currently rank 2nd and 4th in the Big Ten. The men also finished 1-2-3 in the shot put with Studt again leading the way at 56-11 1/2. Trey Davis and freshmen Tyler Kleinhuizen had big PR's coming in at 56-9 1/2 and 56-0.

Davis and Kleinhuizen have a long competitive history that dates back to their junior years in high school when the Forrest Lake (Kleinhuizen) and Farmington (Davis) alumni battled over two state titles with each laying claim to one.

Redshirting freshmen Micah Hegerle has continued to show improvement in the weight throw over the indoor season. His mark of 57-5 last weekend at Bethel was almost a 6 foot improvement on the season. Studt, Davis, and Kleinhuizen currently rank 5th, 6th, and 9th in the Big Ten.

Also ... Iowa State freshmen LaiShima Hampton (St. Louis Park) marked a huge personal best and got the win at the ISU Open with a throw of 56-3.

University of Minnesota - Duluth Senior Tom Soldner (Cold Spring) broke his brother's school record in the weight throw with a Division II provisional mark of 57-3 1/2 .

Former Hamline Coach Kent Stahly Mourned

Long-time Hamline track and field and cross country coach Kent Stahly has died. The 74-year-old Ohio native who led the Piper men's track program to nine straight MIAC outdoor championships between 1974 and 1982 died Tuesday.

Stahly began coaching at Hamline in 1965 and retired in 1999. He served as assistant men's basketball coach, assistant football coach, head men's cross country coach, and head men's track and field coach. Stahly also served as chair of the health and physical education department.

“Kent had a positive impact on hundreds of student-athletes during his career at Hamline," current track and cross country coach Paul Schmaedeke, an athlete under Stahly while at Hamline, said. "He was a coach who taught more then just the sport. Because of his teaching and mentoring, we not only became better athletes, we became better people."

In addition to the string of MIAC titles, Stahly's Pipers finished second at the NCAA Division III championships in 1982 and 1983. Through 1993, his track teams earned 79 All-American honors and had twelve individual national champions.

Stahly started the cross country program at Hamline in 1966 and the indoor track and field program in 1967. His cross country teams won MIAC championships in 1973, 1975 and 1977, and he coached six NCAA Division III All-Americans in cross country. He was also the offensive line coach for Hamline’s 1966 MIAC champion football team.

Stahly was inducted into the Minnesota Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2002.

Services for Stahly ... Calling hours are from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20, at the Roseville Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 21, at 10 a.m. at the Hamline United Methodist Church. A reception will follow the service at the church.

USATF Minn. Debuts Awards Celebration

If you've only ever seen the likes of Hassan Mead, Rasa Troup, and Chris Lundstrom whizzing by you at a competition, then Saturday, February 21 at 7:00 p.m. is your opportunity to see them up close ... and slowed down.

That's the night USATF- Minnesota will host its inaugural Awards Celebration honoring the best athletes in Minnesota. Awards for their exploits in 2008 will be presented to the state's top long distance runners and LDR teams as well as to top youth, race walking, and track and field athletes. The ceremony will also honor the state's top officials.

The celebration will be held at Braemar Country Club, 6364 John Harris Drive in Edina, and will feature a buffet and cash bar. The buffet will be free to USATF-Minnesota members, award winners, and one guest of each award winner. Additional guests and non-USATF members will be charged $10.

Emily Brown Swamps USA Cross Field

Team USA Minnesota's Emily Brown won her first USA title with a dominating 32-second win at the USA Cross Country Championships in Deerwood, Maryland on Saturday.

Brown (pictured), a University of Minnesota alum who's biggest victory had been her 2006 Big Ten steeplechase title in 2006, ran a solo race for half of the rolling, muddy 8000m course.

Brown clocked 26:58. Julie Culley of Virginia was second in 27:30.

Detroit Lakes High School alum and Wisconsin Badger Hanna Grinaker finished 11th in the race; Brown's Team USA Minnesota teammate Meghan Armstrong finished 12th; and Hopkins High School alum Emily Schwitzer, representing Duke University, finished 21st.

"We started out conservatively and at the first 2K I knew there was a pack behind me," Brown recounted in a Team USA Minnesota media release. "After that point I was out in front for the rest of the race. I knew I was the top returner from 2008 so there was some pressure to win the race. But I've been the underdog before and surprised people so I was aware that this year it might be someone else."

Brown ran with teammate Katie McGregor through 4000m, until McGregor -- who wasn't feeling well, according to Team USA Minnesota president Pat Goodwin -- dropped out of the race. After that, it was clear sailing for Brown.

"I'm really pleased with the win," she said. "Running an 8K race out front by myself was a big accomplishment for me. It will build my mental toughness. It's not easy to run alone. You have to stay in the game and conserve your energy."

"I never achieved this [a national championship] in college so it is a cool thing," she added. "I will always be able to call myself a national champion and no one can take that away."

The victory earned Brown a spot on her second straight USA World Cross Country Championships squad, however, she will refuse the opportunity to race in Amman, Jordan due to graduate school conflicts.

Brown's next race will be the USA 15k Championships to be held March 14 in Jacksonville, Florida.

"My coach and I have a schedule set up for one more road race and then I will focus on the track with the goal of making the U.S. team for the IAAF World Outdoor Championships which will be held in Berlin in August," Brown said. "Right now we're undecided on the event I will do. It will be anywhere from the steeple up through the 10,000 meters. We'll see which one will be my strongest event."

In Men's Competition ... Team USA Minnesota's Antonio Vega finished a hard-earned 15th in the 12K USA Cross men's open race, having fallen on the muddy course mid-race. Teammate Matt Gabrielson dropped out of the race at 6K with a recurring side stitch problem. Stillwater High School alum Luke Watson finished 27th in the race.

Zach Mellon Signs with Wisconsin

Confirming what had been rumored for weeks on the sport's message boards, the fastest boys' high school 800 meter runner in state history, Zach Mellon of Buffalo, will compete for the University of Wisconsin as a collegian.

The Star-Tribune reports, HERE, that Mellon (pictured) signed with the Badgers yesterday on national signing day.

Mellon clocked 1:48.64 to finish second at last year's USA Junior Championships, bettering Jason Owen's mark of 1:49.13 from 1996 as the fastest 800m ever run by a Minnesota prep.

Mellon is a two-time MSHSL champion at 800m.

Mellon will join fellow state record-holders Quinn Evans (400m) and Rob Finnerty (1600m) in Madison. The state's top prep shot putter last season, Casey Dehn of Owatonna, will also attend Madison on a football scholarship next year, according to the Star-Trib.

Get in Gear to Add Half Marathon

This year's edition of Get in Gear, Minnesota road racing's self-proclaimed "Annual Rite of Spring" will feature a half marathon race along with its signature 10K, race officials announced.

The event, entering its 32nd year, also features 5K and a 2K races. All events will be held at Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis on April 25.

"We are extremely excited and proud to be able to offer a half marathon to our family of events to make Minnesota's Annual Rite of Spring truly an event that has something for everyone," Paulette Odenthal, Get in Gear executive director said in a media release. "We think the half marathon will fill the need of the long distance runner who needs the distance as a benchmark for their spring marathon or as a challenge for runners working toward the marathon."

The half marathon course, which follows the 10K route up West River Parkway in Minneaplis to the Lake Street Bridge, will continue south along Mississippi River Blvd on the St. Paul side of the Mississippi River to a turn-around point on Shepard Road before returning the the Minnehaha Park start/finish area via the Ford Bridge.

The Half Marathon will be limited to 1,000 participants this year.

The 2k Fun Run, which attracts hundreds of children through the Fit for Fun Youth Running Program, will kick off the day's action at 8:15 a.m. The Half Marathon starts at 9:00 a.m., followed by the 10K race at 9:30, and the 5K run at 9:50.

The prize purse for the 10K, which attracts over 4,000 runners, features $1,000, $750 and $500 for first, second and third place open men and women, plus $250 each for the first Minnesota male and female. The master's prize structure is $500, $250 and $100 for first, second and third place men and women, respectively.

The Get in Gear 10K serves as the USATF-Minnesota state 10K championship this year and is part of teh USATF-Minnesota Team Circuit.

The Get in Gear 10K race began in 1978 as a means to spark interest in fitness. In its first year, over 6,000 participated and from this initial response, the race has been a fixture on the spring running calendar as well as Minnesota's largest 10K race.

Team USA Minn. Sending Six to USA XC

Team USA Minnesota will send six athletes to Saturday's USA Cross Country Championships in Deerwood, Maryland. The event will serve as the qualifying competition for the USA team for the IAAF World Cross Country Championship to be held in Amman, Jordan on March 28.

Competing for the Minnesota-based elite distance training group will be: Emily Brown, Katie McGregor and Meghan Armstrong in the senior women's 8K race and Matt Gabrielson, Michael Hanlon and Antonio Vega in the senior men's 12K.

The top six finishers in the senior races earn the right to represent the United States at World Cross.

Last year, Brown finished third at the championships and was 18th at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, leading the U.S. women to a fourth-place team finish. Brown has two cross country races under her belt already this winter, having competed in January at the Antrim International Cross Country meet in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and at the BUPA Great Edinburgh International Cross Country race in Scotland.

McGregor was fourth at the 2008 championships and also competed at World Cross on the fourth-place women's team. Last year marked the sixth consecutive time the University of Michigan grad has qualified for the USA's World Cross team . This will be McGregor's first competition of 2009 and her first race since running a personal best 2:31:14 at the ING New York City Marathon last November.

Gabrielson is a three-time qualifier for the U.S. World Cross Country team, having represented the country at World Cross in 2005-07. This will be his first outing since finishing second at the USA Men's Marathon Championship in October where he qualified for the 2009 U.S. World Outdoor team in the marathon.

Armstrong, Hanlon, and Vega will be making their USA Cross Country Championships debuts. All three, however, we collegiate harriers.

At the University of Iowa where she graduated in 2008, Armstrong was a three-time NCAA cross country qualifier as well as an All-American for finishing 16th at NCAAs in 2007. Hanlon was an individual qualifier at NCAA Cross Country from Colgate University, where he graduated in 2007, as well as a three-time Patriot League top five finisher.

Vega, who graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2007 and competed in three NCAA Cross Country Championships for the Golden Gophers, was an All-American in cross and was the Midwest Regional Cross Country Champion in 2005. Vega most recently finished seventh at the USA Half Marathon Championships in January with a personal best time of 1:02:55.

Other Minnesotans ... Also competing at USA Cross Country are former Stillwater High School star Luke Watson and former Detroit Lakes standout and current Wisconsin Badger Hanna Grinaker.

Goucher Makes It All Look Natural

Whether it's marathons, ten-milers and half marathons, championship 5000 and 10,000 meter track races, or indoor miles, Duluth native Kara Goucher makes it look like every aspect of distance running comes pretty darn naturally to her.

On Friday night, the defending USA 10 Mile champ, who has beaten Paula Radcliffe over 13.1 miles, who was third at the New York City Marathon last fall, and who was the World Championships 10,000 meter bronze medalist in 2007 swamped the women's mile field on Friday night for her second straight Millrose Games title.

Goucher (pictured), who took the lead at the half-way point, clocked a run-away 4:33.19 for the win. Serbia's Marina Muncan was runner-up in 4:37.77.

"I ran 4:39 on my own a couple of weeks ago," Goucher said after the race. "The pace [at Millrose] was out pretty quick, and if I hadn't faded the last couple of laps, it might have been faster. My stride is a shuffle, so my coach told me, when you want to move fast, don't stride out. Try to make it quick."

Goucher, despite the short-distance racing, is training for this April's Boston Marathon under the guidance of coach Alberto Salazar.

"I was ready to do something a little different today," the Duluth East alum said. "My coach talked to me about taking the lead at the half mile and slowing it down, which is something I never do. So I took the lead and was waiting for someone to come up on me, but they didn't."

Goucher reportedly plans one final indoor race -- at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games next weekend -- before zeroing in on her spring marathon in that city.

"The mile tells me I'm not doing too much," Goucher offered regarding her marathon training. "Alberto says doing the shorter races is a good indicator. When you're training for a marathon, you may feel a little burnt. In an 80-mile week, which is what I'll end up at this week, I can still run a 4:33 mile. Apparently, he's not pushing me hard enough. I'm running 18 miles on Sunday."
