| One of the greatest performances in the history of the Minnesota State High School League’s boys track and field came in 1973 by Rochester John Marshall’s Rod Raver. In the meet that was held at Michie Field at St. Cloud Apollo High School, Raver entered the Class AA high jump competition when the bar was raised to 6 feet, 4 inches. He cleared that height and the ones that followed at 6-6, 6-8, 6-10 7-0, and 7-1, all on his first attempt. He missed three consecutive times when the bar was placed at 7-1 ½. If he had cleared that mark of 7-1 ½, it would have equaled the national record set in 1971 by Dwight Stones of Glendale High School in Glendale, Calif., in 1971. Raver won the 1972 state championship in the high jump with a leap of 6-6. Entering the 1973 state meet, he had set a Minnesota all-time mark of 6-10.
