Is it officially a Drake dynasty?
For the third straight year and the fifth time in the last six editions of "America's Athletic Classic," the University of Minnesota women are the Drake Relays 4 x 1600-meter relay champions.
Yesterday, the Gopher quartet of Nikki Swenson, Missa Varpness, Stephanie Price, and Elizabeth Yetzer teamed to win the event in 19:06.52, outrunning Iowa, the runners-up at 19:17.52.
Anchorwoman Yetzer, who took the baton from Price in second place, collected her fourth career Drake Relays title in the 4 x 1600m. She is the first Gopher to accomplish the feat. Overall, the Lakeville North alumnus has won five Drake titles in her Gopher career.
“All the previous legs had run strong,” Yetzer said in a Gopher media release. “I was okay to be in second place. I was actually excited that I got to race someone. It was an advantage for me because I got to tuck behind the Iowa runner and avoid the wind a little bit.”
The Minnesota men kicked off competition at Drake as well. Mike Shelendich ran 1:54.39 for fifth in the unseeded 800-meter run. Joe McFarland placed 10th in the race with a time of 1:56.01.
Kevin Lachowitzer was 9th in the 5,000 meters running 14:19.15.
