Lots happening at the opening days of the AAU Junior Olympic Championships in Norfolk, Virginia. Chris Dallager provides the summary of the action, starting with the medalists.
Medalists
Intermediate Girls(15-16) Javelin Throw: Natalie Zobel(Eagan) placed fifthth of 48 with a throw of 33.12m (108' 8"). Zobel attends Minnehaha Academy and started focusing on the javelin throw four years ago.
Midget Girls(11-12)Long Jump: Candise Fountain(Brooklyn Park) placed seventh of 70 with a jump of 4.67m (15' 4")
Semi-Finalists
Sub-Bantam Girls(age 9)100 meter dash: J'iana Cager(ICAA/MN Breeze from St. Paul) qualified for the semi-finals with the fifth fastest time of 81 athletes in 14.36 seconds. Cager was the national champion in the 100, 200 and 400 for Primary Girls in 2009 and USATF Minnesota Bantam Girl Athlete of the Year.
Sub-Bantam Boys 100 meter dash: Tylan Brooks(ICAA/MN Breeze) moves on to the semis with a 14.63, seventeenth best of 73 athletes.
Bantam Girls(age 10) 100 meter dash: Ellie Bedingham(from Woodbury running for ICAA/MN Breeze) moves on to the semi-finals with the fifteenth fastest time of 74 athletes in 14.32 seconds.
Bantam Boys 100 meter dash: Keylan Jackson(ICAA/MN Breeze) advances with a time of 13.88, fifteenth of 73 athletes.
Sub-Midget Boys(age 11): Dominik London(Team Woodbury) makes it to the semi-finals with a time of 13.41, twenty-secondnd of 71 athletes.
Youth Boys(age 14)100 meter dash: Shaheed Hickman(Brooklyn Park) ran 11.65 seconds placing fifteenthth of 84 athletes and advances to semi-finals.
Intermediate Girls(15-16)100 meter dash: Taylor Anderson(Brooklyn Park) had the thirteenth fastest time of 77 runners in 12.37 seconds. Anderson was a member of Hopkins High School State Championship 4 x 100 meter relay team and placed fourth in the 100 meter dash at the MSHSL Championships.
Finalist
Intermediate Girls(15-16)800 meter run: Samantha Nielsen(Maplewood) qualified to the finals with the tenth best time of 2:18.02. Nielsen was part of Roseville's state championship 4 x 800 meter relay in June at the Minnesota State High School League Championships.
