First-Ever National Running Day Announced

People celebrate foolishness on April 1st.

On June 3rd, the plan is to celebrate running.

Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. officials announced today that they, in conjunction with running organizations and events from across the country, will celebrate the first-ever National Running Day on Wednesday, June 3, 2009. The day is set aside to "promote running as a healthy, easy, and accessible form of exercise."

Other organizations involved in the effort include, USA Track and Field, Running USA, the New York Road Runners, and event organizers from across the country.

“Everyone can run. That’s the message of this day,” New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg said in a media release. “As an industry, we know first-hand how great running is. Millions of Americans have discovered that running is an easy way to feel better, look better, and live better."

Locally, recognition of the day includes official state and city proclamations from Governor Tim Pawlenty, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman announcing June 3 as Minnesota Running Day.

TCM and partners Marathon Sports of Minneapolis, Running Room of St. Paul, and the Minneapolis and St. Paul Parks and Recreations Boards, will host free, fun-runs that day, led by Team USA Minnesota runners.
