Kara Goucher 5th at Boston Marathon

Duluth native Kara Goucher finished 5th among women at today's 115th Boston Marathon.

Goucher clocked at PR 2:24:50 with the assistance of whipping tailwind.

Caroline Kilel of Kenya won women's race in 2:22:36; American Desiree Davila was a close second in a PR 2:22:40.

2009 Minnesota Runner of the Year Jen Houck finished 18th among women in 2:34:28.

Geoffery Mutai won the men's race with the fastest marathon time ever run -- 2:03:02. The time will not be considered the world record, however, due to the net-downhill nature of the Boston Marathon course.

American Ryan Hall finished 4th among men in a PR 2:04:58.

Lehmkuhle 13th in Virgin London Marathon

Team USA Minnesota's Jason Lehmkuhle finished top American in 13th place at the Virgin London Marathon with a time of 2:13:40. He went through the half in 1:05:42.

Kenya's Emmanuel Mutai won the race in 2:04:40. Mary Keitany, also of Kenya, won the women's race in 2:19:19.

In Other Action ... Four of Lehmkuhle's Team USA Minnesota teammates posted personal bests at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California, over the weekend.

In the Women’s Invitational Elite 5000-meter, Megan Hogan ran 15:29.12 for a whopping 40-second PR to finish ninth. Also running in the Elite 5000 was Meghan Armstrong who posted 16:20.02. In the Men’s Olympic Development Elite 5000-meter, Chris Rombough was second in a personal best time of 13:42.05.

As we reported earlier, Jamie Cheever won the Women’s Olympic Development Elite 3000-meter steeplechase event with a time of 10:02.18 and Emily Brown won the Women’s Invitational Elite 10,000-meter Run in 33:16.44, which was her debut time in the distance on the track.

“The reason I wanted to come to Mt. SAC was to run my pace for a time to get to USA Outdoor,” Brown said in Team USA Minnesota media release. “Since April 2009 I’ve had a (asthma-related) breathing problem and I’ve been to a lot of doctors. Now I am just training through it and the last couple of months I’ve been getting my fitness back. My competitors run in the 31’s for the 10,000 so there is still a lot of work to do but I like the distance.”

Cheever, Brown and Hogan achieved “A” qualifying times in their events for the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held June 23-26 in Eugene, Oregon.

Next up for Hogan, Armstrong and Rombough will be the Cardinal Invitational at Stanford on May 1. Brown plans to compete in the Lilac Bloomsday Run in Spokane that day, with Cheever still determining her next track event.

Prep Season Gets Rolling this Weekend

With all the marathon hoopla and college track and field action this weekend, it's easy to forget that Minnesota's high school season is starting to heat up ... even if the outside temperatures aren't.

On tap this weekend are three major early-season events.

Tonight at the University of Minnesota, Eden Prairie, Edina, and Wayzata -- the top three boys' teams in Class AA last year -- will tussle at the Lake Relays.

Individual stars like sprinter Devan Crawford-Tufts of Edina, jumpers Michael Sandle and Rumeal Harris of Eden Prairie, and the state's fastest returning miler Christian Skaret of Minnetonka will test themselves against the elements.

Also on the docket tonight is the mammoth Lakeville North Mega-Meet. Heat sheets for it can be found HERE. On deck Saturday is the storied Pony Relays in Stillwater, which will be contested for the 43rd straight year.

Gophers, Ex-Gophers Strong at Mt. SAC

University of Minnesota sophomore Stephanie Price finished 5th in the Mt. SAC Relays Invitational Elite 10,000 meters on Thursday night in Walnut, California, part of a contingent of Gophers and former Gophers excelling the the meet.

Price clocked a time of 34:02.15 in her debut 10,000m. Her time ranks #4 in Golden Gopher history. Redshirt freshman Katie Moraczewski ran the #8 time in school history in the steeplechase, placing 13th in the Open A 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:52.56.

Two former Gophers won Mt. SAC Relays titles on Thursday. Emily Brown won the Olympic Development Invitational Elite 10,000 meters in a time of 33:16.44. Jamie Cheever captured the title in the Olympic Development Elite 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:02.18.

Gopher Men ... Minnesota senior Mike Torchia placed ninth in the Mt. SAC Relays Olympic Development Invitational 10,000m run. Torchia clocked a personal-best time of 29 minutes, 13.20 seconds, just two seconds shy of breaking into the Gopher top-10 list in the event.

Pieter Gagnon finished second in the Olympic Development Elite 10,000 meters with a time of 29:24.11

In multi-event competition, Jack Szmanda moved up six places on the second day of competition, to finish in eighth-place in the Mt. SAC Relays decathlon. Szmanda posted a a career-high score of 7,286 points.

He opened the day with a time of 15.12 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles, then tossed the javelin a distance of 138-8. Szmanda made up a lot of points by clearing 15-9 in the pole vault. He finished with a throw of 153-11 in the discus and a time of 4:39.07 in the 1,500 meters.

The Gophers also had three decathletes competing in the California Invitational Decathlon, contested at the same site as the Mt. SAC Relays decathlon. Brock Spandl, competing in his first career decathlon, was edged by one point for the title with 7,384 points.

Spandl’s score ranks sixth in Gopher history. He ran a time of 14.83 in the 110-meter high hurdles to start the second day. Spandl’s effort in the pole vault was sandwiched between a throw of 122-3 in the discus and 162-0 in the javelin. He ended the competition running a time of 4:57.32 in the 1,500 meters.

Joey Schwecke finished third with 7,096 points with marks of 15.92 in the 110m hurdles, 137-5 in the discus, 13-5 1/4 in the pole vault, 156-6 in the javelin and 5:00.31 in the 1,500 meters. Kenny Schofield slipped to 14th with 6,278 points after failing to make a height in the pole vault. Schofield’s other performances were 15.93 in the 100m hurdles, 120-3 in the discus, 145-3 in the javelin and 4:37.79 in the 1,500 meters.

Yes/No: Goucher in the Top-5 at Boston?

In 2009, Kara Goucher led the Boston Marathon in the late stages of the race before getting outkicked and placing third, nine seconds behind the winner Salina Kosgei of Kenya. Goucher returns in 2011, fit as always, but now traveling with an additional member of her family. Boston will represent Goucher's return to marathon racing after the birth of her son, Colton, in September.

The field is outstanding as there are about eight women who legitimately have a realistic chance to win. Kara Goucher is certainly one of them; where will she finish?

Y/N: Will Kara Goucher finish among the top five females at the Boston Marathon on Monday?

Kara Goucher ran 1:09:03 at the Half Marathon in New York on March 20th. She blogs about her recent training and indicates that her strength is at a higher level than it was in 2009. Goucher will be six months post-pregnancy in the Boston Marathon and her fitness seems to be increasing each times she races.

The field is formidable. The top two finishers from 2010 return - Teyba Erkesso and Tatyana Pushkareva. Four-time champion Catherine Ndereba will return to Boston as will 2008 winner/2009 runner-up, Dire Tune. Florence Kiplagat will make her marathon debut with a resume that includes 2009 IAAF Cross Country Champion and 2010 IAAF World Half Marathon Champion. The winner of the Half Marathon in New York where Goucher placed third was Caroline Rotich and she will make her presence felt in Boston as well. Kim Smith enters the race with a 1:07:36 half marathon time under her belt from February.

Lastly, the United States boasts more contenders than just Goucher. Desiree Davila is the fourth-fastest American of all-time after running 2:26 at Chicago last year. Veteran Blake Russell is also running her first marathon after having a child.

Team USA Minnesota Eyes Busy Week

Team USA Minnesota has a busy week of running ahead of it -- with five athletes competing in California and Jason Lehmkuhle headed to London.

Five Team USA Minnesota tracksters – Meghan Armstrong, Megan Hogan, Jamie Cheever, Emily Brown, and Chris Rombough – are set to compete at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California on Thursday and Friday.

On Thursday, Cheever will compete in one of the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase events, while Brown is entered in a section of the women’s 10,000-meters.

Cheever has a steeplechase best of 10:11.2, set while at the University of Minnesota. Brown will be competing in the 10,000-meters on the track for the first time; she has run 34:00 on the road in the 10K.

On Friday, Armstrong and Hogan will run in a section of the women’s 5000-meters and Rombough will compete in one of the men’s 5000-meter events.

Armstrong has a best of 15:41.10 in the 5000, and Hogan has posted 16:09.54. Rombough has run 13:48.8 for the distance.

The 53rd annual event will be held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium, which is located on the campus of Mt. San Antonio College.

Lehmkuhle to London ... On Sunday, Team USA Minnesota’s Jason Lehmkuhle will be part of the deep international field at the Virgin London Marathon.

Lehmkuhle is seeking a fast time on the flat course that passes London landmarks and finishes at Buckingham Palace. He has a marathon best of 2:12:24 which he set at Boston in 2010 when he finished ninth overall.

“I wanted to get on a course that gave me the best chance to run in the 2:10 to 2:11 range and something that would more closely simulate the flatish course that the 2012 U.S. Trials will be run on,” Lehmkuhle told DtB earlier this month.

So far this year, Lehmkuhle has finished fifth at the USA Half Marathon Championships in January with a time of 1:02:49, was first in the Ohme 30K Road Race in Japan in February with a time of 1:32:08, and was 16th at the NYC Half Marathon in March with a time of 1:02:58.

Lehmkuhle has run marathons at Twin Cities, Chicago, New York and Boston and was a rabbit for a 2:11 pace group at the London Marathon in 2008. He finished fifth in the 2007 U.S. Olympic Men’s Marathon Trials and ninth in the 2004 Marathon Trials.

He plans to compete in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Men’s Marathon Trials, which will be held next January in Houston.

Gopher Men #13 in NCAA Rankings

The University of Minnesota men's track and field team moved down two spots to #13 in the latest NCAA Division I rankings, released today.

The Gophers are the only Big Ten men's program ranked in the top-25 nationally. The University of Florida leads the rankings, followed by Texas A & M and Texas Tech, respectively.

The Gopher women are currently tabbed as the #61 team in D1, a 32-place improvement over last week's rank.

Texas A & M leads the women's rankings, followed by LSU and Oregon. Penn State is the top-ranked Big Ten school at #23.

Gopher Thinclads Strong at Arizona Meets

The Gopher men's and women's track teams continued the southern swing of their outdoor season with more action in Arizona last weekend.

U of M thrower Micah Hegerle earned the unique distinction of winning the same event in two separate meet on the same day -- topping the hammer throw at the Mesa Classic and at Arizona State's Sun Angel Classic. Hegerle threw 207-1 in Mesa and 209-4 down the road in Tempe.

The men’s 4 x 400-meter relay was the lone Gopher victor on the track at the Sun Angel Classic. The foursome of Kevin Bradley, John Holton, Oladipo Fagbemi, and Harun Abda clocked a season-best time of 3 minutes, 10.05 seconds to win.

Earlier in the meet, Abda posted a career-best 1:48.54 800 meters for second place. The time ranks #5 in Gopher history. Relay teammate Fagbemi also excelled in an individual event landing a career-best leap of 23-11 1/2 inches to finish fourth in the long jump.

Cameron Boy added a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters with a 21.67. He teamed with Ryan Todhunter, Sean King, and Fagbemi to place sixth in the 4x100-meter relay in a season-best time of 41.06 seconds.

Todhunter was also sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.75.

Three Gopher throwers collected top-five finishes on Saturday. Aaron Studt placed fourth in the open shot put at 54-11 1/4, followed by Trey Davis in fifth with 54-8. Tyler Kleinhuizen placed fifth in the open discus with 166-10.

Gopher Women ... Sharyn Dahl opened the weekend with a win in the 400-meter hurdles at the Mesa Classic, running 1:00.80. Teammate Kelly Stalpes was third in a time of 1:02.06. Kim Hovey captured the title in the invitational shot put with a throw of 47-3 3/4.

The next day at the Sun Angel Classic, Dahl became the sixth hurdler in Minnesota history to run a sub-sixty-second time in the 400-meter hurdles. The junior placed third with her career-best 59.20, the fifth-fastest time in school history.

Todea-Kay Willis finished third in the Sun Angel long jump with a leap of 19-10 3/4 inches.

Alena Brooks added her name to the Gophers’ top-10 list in the 800 meters. She placed seventh with a time of 2:08.18, the eighth-best time in Gopher history.

Brooks also anchored the Gopher 4x100-meter relay that placed sixth in a time of 45.92 seconds. Joining Brooks on the relay were Todea-Kay Willis, Nyoka Giles, and Chimerem Okoroji.

Yes/No: Gabrielson Top-Seven in Ireland?

Matt Gabrielson will travel to Dublin this weekend for Ireland's premier 10k run. The Great Ireland Run has attracted such luminaries as Craig Mottram and Sonia O'Sullivan over the years and will serve as Ireland's 10k National Championship.

This year the men's elite list includes defending champion Martin Fagan, former IAAF World Cross Country silver medalist Sergey Lebid, and 2004 Olympic 1500 bronze medalist Rui Silva. Gabrielson is running the race as part of his his preparations for Grandma's Marathon in June.

Grandma's Adds Corporate Team Competition

Grandma’s Marathon will add a corporate team division to its marathon and half marathon races this year, event organizers announced yesterday.

Any corporation, for-profit, or non-profit organization, can create a team to compete in Grandma’s Marathon or the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon for a $25 fee per race. Rules require that each team include a minimum of three members with one female and one runner 35-years-old or older. All team rosters need to be finalized by June 1.

Awards will be distributed in numerous categories to corporate teams for Grandma’s Marathon and the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, both to be held on June 18.

"The corporate competition will make a great addition to our 35th anniversary event," Scott Keenan, executive director of Grandma’s Marathon, said. “This is an exciting way for runners to showcase some company pride along with their fellow employees and we are excited to acknowledge these corporate groups for their participation.”

Gopher Men Drop to #11 in NCAA

The University of Minnesota men moved down one spot to #11 in the latest NCAA Division I track and field poll, released yesterday.

The Gophers are the only Big Ten men's program ranked in the top-25 nationally. The University of Florida leads the rankings, followed by Texas A & M and Texas Tech, respectively.

The Gopher women are currently tabbed as the #93 team in D1.

Jason Lehmkuhle is Ready for London

Down the Backstretch: Most people run London for a fast time. Aside from a lot of turns, it’s a pretty flat, fast course. Is that the reason you chose to run London?

Jason Lehmkuhle: The goal this spring was to run a flat and fast marathon. Since the 2004 Olympic Trials, I've been exclusively on somewhat difficult marathon courses, or, maybe more accurately, not courses that people generally seek out to run fast (Boston, New York, Twin Cities).

I'm getting a little older and PR's are going to be harder to come by, but I really believe I can run faster in the marathon. I wanted to get on a course that gave me the best chance to run in the 2:10 to 2:11 range, and something that more would more closely simulate the flatish course that the 2012 Trials will be run on.

DtB: What did your New York half tell you about your fitness, your progress for London?

JL: I was just alright with my run in New York, not disappointed but not especially excited by it either. I felt a little flat during the race, but I was coming off of my biggest few weeks of training. It's not uncommon for me to have a less-than-inspiring final tune-up pre-marathon. I think I'm right on track. Overall, my training during the buildup has been very solid. That tells me more about my readiness for London than the NYC Half did.

DtB: Do you have a time range you’re hoping to run in London?

JL: 2:10 to 2:11:59

DtB: The Brit, Andrew Lemoncello, was close to you in New York and is running London. Did you guys run together? Are there any plans by the race organizers to have pacers for those trying to run certain times other than the front runners? Have you, Smyth, and Trafeh talked about the race, sharing the pace, any sort of joint effort?

JL: I actually didn't run with Andrew until the final 300-400 meters. He ran just off of the group I was running with for most of the race and closed really well. Andrew (Lemoncello), Patrick (Smyth), a small group of Aussies and myself will likely run together with a couple of rabbits in London aiming for 2:10 pace.

DtB: How does running London fit into your plans for the US Olympic trials, attempting to make the team?

JL: With the timing of the Trials in January, it really made sense for me to only do a marathon this Spring. For me, there's just not enough time to recover from a Fall marathon and do a good buildup for the trials. As I mentioned, I also wanted to run on a flatter course that might better approximate what the Houston course is like. London works perfectly.

DtB: Are you going to hang around London after the race to see some of the sights, visit the Olympic site?

JL: Unfortunately, I leave the morning after the marathon. In all likelihood, I won't do much sightseeing. I was in London for the marathon in 2008. I was a rabbit for a 2:11 pace group. I did a little touring around the city then. London is very cool. I'm excited to go back.

One Automatic and Seven Provisional Qualifying Marks at Hamline Invitational

The temperature jumped into the 50s and the sun was out just in time for the Hamline Invitational on Satuday. One woman, UMD's Morgan Place, ran an automatic NCAA qualifying mark in winning the 5K in a time of 16:42.88. Her teammate, Bridget Himes, got a provisional qualifier(PQ) in second place in 17:34.15.

Augsburg's Shanek Telphia won the 100 and 200 meter dashes in 12.50 and 25.04, respectively. Her 200 time was a provisional qualifying mark. Team USA Minnesota women--Meghan Armstrong, Jamie Cheever, and Katie McGregor--went 1,2,3 in the 1,500 meters with times of 4:23.48, 4:26.40, and 4:37.97, respectively.

For the men, Augsburg's Nick Ward won the 100 and the long jump. His 100 time of 10.79 is a provisional qualifier. He jumped 22' 6.25" in the long jump. Domonique Glimer of Concordia St. Paul was also a double winner taking the 200 in 21.86(a PQ) and the 400 in 48.78. Hamline's Jack Diechert was the first collegian in the 1,500 with a provisional qualifying time of 3:52.57.

Team USA's Chris Rombough won the event in 3:50.17, and the University of Minnesota's Hassan Mead was third in 3:53.50. Hamline's Brennan McKeag got two provisional qualifers as he won the shot put with a toss of 51' 4.5", and was the first collegian in second place in the Hammer throw with a PQ of 175' 10".

Nomination open for Grandma's Marathon Rudy Perpich Public Service Award

You don’t have to be a runner, volunteer or spectator in order to play a role in this year’s 35th Grandma’s Marathon.

Nominations are being accepted for the 2011 Rudy Perpich Public Service Award through Friday, April 15. Nominees can be any current or former public employee or elected official who has exhibited dedication to Grandma's Marathon by contributing time, energy and service to the annual running of the event. In 2006, Grandma's Marathon created the Rudy Perpich Public Service Award, named after the late Minnesota governor who was a tremendous supporter of the annual event.

Chris Erichsen on His Olympic Trials Qualifier

Down the Backstretch: Why did you choose Shamrock to make your attempt to qualify?

Chris Erichsen: Shamrock is a flat, fast course, which was definitely something I was looking for. The late-March timing was also ideal, as it allowed me to race a marathon early in the spring and still make it back in time for the majority of the summer road racing schedule.

DtB: After having come so close in two other attempts were you beginning to have doubts if you would ever make it or did you manage to keep a positive outlook?

CE: No, I don’t think it was ever an issue maintaining a positive outlook after Fargo last year and Houston in January. Even though I was running times that were very close to the standard for both the full and the half, I wasn’t regressing.

I continued to get faster season after season, so I figured it was a matter of putting myself in a good position to qualify and then running well on that day. That’s basically what Shamrock was,even though the conditions were less than ideal, I had trained well enough and raced smart enough to set myself up for success.

DtB: You said your long runs went up as high as 26 miles. Why that long? Did you do the 26 miler on a treadmill or outdoors?

CE: Getting up to 26 miles for my long run was just a natural progression in my training schedule. I wasn’t necessarily setting out to run 26 miles before the actual marathon, it just worked out that way.

I usually find it fairly difficult to begin a long run, knowing exactly how long you are going to be out there. If I finished a 22-miler the week before, I might shoot for 20 and add on at the end if I’m feeling good.

This year’s winter did force me to do some long runs on the treadmill. It’s not the most exciting thing in the world, but it also goes surprisingly fast when you catch a good movie or game on TV. I don’t feel as guilty watching two straight hours of TV if I’m running the whole time.

DtB: Because of all the snow, and especially ice, on the roads and sidewalks how did you determine what runs you'd do outdoors and what runs indoors?

CE: If I could see where I was running or if I knew the trails were plowed, I would try to run outside. Unfortunately, this meant I was inside during most of the work week. A majority of my workouts were also on the treadmill, as it was one of the few pieces of dry ground in the area.

I tried to get outside at least a few times every week, but with races so early in the season (and in warmer weather), I was usually OK if I ended up running inside. I saw the entire New Year’s resolution workout cycle this year.

DtB: Did you have any particular workouts, races during the run up to Shamrock that convinced you that you could get the qualifying time there?

CE: I think there were two main reasons that I felt confident about hitting the qualifying time heading into Shamrock. The first was my performance at the US Half-Marathon championships in Houston. I finished in 65:41 and missed the standard by about three seconds per mile.

I personally think the half-marathon standard of 65:00 is tougher, so knowing I was pretty fit in January was encouraging. I also did a number of longer tempo runs, which felt easier and easier over the course of the training cycle. I wouldn’t say I was convinced I would get the qualifying time at Shamrock, but I was convinced I was in good enough shape to do so.

DtB: Did you have training partners or others you run with?

CE: Matthew Berry, Joe Soucheray, and Brandon Flowers play pretty integral roles in my training. In all seriousness, I try to get out with the Collegeville team about once a month, and I run with other guys with about the same frequency. I primarily train on my own because that is what fits my schedule.

DtB: Now that you've achieved your goal and have a had a few days to let it sink in, have you readjusted your goals, set new ones, or are you just going to enjoy the Trials experience?

CE: There will definitely be new goals, but that’s something I won’t be focusing on for a little while. If I start setting new goals now, I might get too excited and overdo it. In the next few weeks, I will sit down with my coach to re-assess both short and long-term goals.

DtB: Where you doing two runs a day or just one long workout each day? If it was two that would mean runs before and after work every day. How did you handle that?

CE: Most days when I was running a lot of mileage, it was two workouts per day. After a while, it becomes routine to wake up early and run, skip happy hours after work, etc. Eventually, it can become tougher to break that routine to sleep in or take an afternoon off. It’s all a matter of perspective.

DtB: Were your co-workers aware of your quest? If so, did they throw you a celebratory party after you got back from Virginia?

CE: If they weren’t, they definitely heard about it. The coordinator of the Target Run Club sent out a “news flash” e-mail on the Monday after the race, and when I got back in the office I had over 150 congratulatory emails, most from people I had never even met. The support I received from my co-workers, friends, and family was incredible.

Yes/No: Studt over sixty feet at Jim Click Shootout?

The Gophers are back in action this weekend competing in Outdoor Track. The men and women will run, throw and jump at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Arizona. The Gophers will match-up against Arizona, Washington State and Ohio State with all the events except the multis scheduled for Saturday.

The Gopher men were very strong in the throws during the indoor season. The crew will instantly improve outdoors with the addition of Aaron Studt. Let us know how he will do this weekend...

Y/N: Will Aaron Studt throw sixty feet or further in the shot put on Saturday?

Studt is a four-time All-American using up his final season of eligibility. Studt has personal bests of 63-6 3/4 indoors and 63-2 3/4 outdoors in the shot put. Studt kicked off the outdoor season winning the shot at the Baldy Castillo invitational with a distance of 57-1 1/2.
