Agnes Esser wrapped up competition at the 2017 FISU Summer World University Games with top-15 finishes in both the discus and the hammer throw while representing her native Canada in Taipei, Taiwan, this week.
After advancing through the discus qualification round, Esser placed 12th in the discus final with a throw of 49.93m (163-09). She improved on each of her three attempts, throwing 47.22m (154-11) on her first throw and 48.24m (158-03) on her second throw before ending with a mark of 49.93m.
Esser also competed in the qualification round of the hammer throw. She placed 10th in Group B and ended up 15th overall with a throw of 57.61m (189-00). Esser threw 57.42m (188-04) and 57.26m (187-10) on her first two throws, respectively. Qualifying performances of 59.00m automatically advance to the final on Saturday.
Along with adjusting to a 13-hour time difference from Minnesota to Taiwan, Esser competed in the discus final less than seven hours after the hammer qualification round. One of 51 athletes representing Athletics Canada at the World University Games, Esser was the only female athlete competing in two events for Canada.
