Bethel's Matt Berens (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) received his third MIAC Men's Cross Country Athlete-of-the-Week award this fall after winning the Maroon III race at the Griak Invitational on Saturday.
Berens ran 25:45.4, winning by 10 seconds. Berens has is undefeated this season and is the first Bethel runner since 2009 and the second Royal ever to finish first at the Griak meet. In the process, Berens led Bethel to a 17th-place finish out of 26 teams.
Colette Chelichowski (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) led Carlton to a third-place finish in the team competition in the Maroon II race at the Griak Invitational on Saturday. The Carleton junior turned it on over the second half of the race to cross the finish line in sixth place. For her performance, Celichowski was named the MIAC Women's Cross Country Athlete-of-the-Week.
Celichowski ran 22:56. She was in 11th at the midway point, but moved up five spots over the final three kilometers to help her team take third out of 29 schools. Carleton finished behind only No. 2 Wartburg and nationally-ranked Bates, and finished ahead of three nationally-ranked programs and two others receiving votes.
The Knights - ranked No. 12 in the nation - will be back in action Friday with a trip into Wisconsin. Carleton will compete in the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational, which will be held at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wis., starting at 4 p.m. Celichowski and her teammates have two races left on the schedule to prepare for the 2013 MIAC Championships on Nov. 2.
