The best of the best will show up in Eugene this weekend for the 2013 Prefontaine Classic. There are too many great athletes to name, but the 10K match-up between 2012 double Olympic Champ Mo Farah and 10000 meter world record holder Kenenisa Bekele is bound to be a duel for the ages. World record holders Aries Merritt (110 hurdles) and David Rudisha (800 meters) will certainly attract attention, along with high school phenom Mary Cain.
Blending in with all of the Olympic medalists and record holders is a name everyone in Minnesota will recognize. Hassan Mead has proven that he is at home with the best runners in the United States. He will compete in the 5000 meters at the Pre Classic.
Mead just missed the "A" qualifying standard for the World Championships in the 5k when he ran 13:15:50 at Stanford in April. Let us know whether he will hit that mark this weekend...
Yes/No: Will Hassan Mead run 13:15.00 or faster at the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday?
The 5k field is outstanding and features a who's who of American distance runners. This group includes Galen Rupp, Dathen Ritzenhein, Chris Derrick and Bernard Lagat. The international portion of this race is top-notch as well. London bronze-medalist Thomas Longosiwa leads a field that includes three other sub 12:50 runners: Isiah Koech, John Kipkoech and Yenew Alamirew.
