The University of Minnesota men won the Drake Relays 4 x 800-meter relay title and pole vaulter Ben Peterson tied for first-place at the meet in Friday action at the historic meet.
The Gopher foursome of David Pachuta, Travis Burkstrand, Nick Hutton and Harun Abda won the 4 x 800-meter relay in a school-record time of 7:19.51.
Peterson captured a share of the Drake Relays title in the pole vault by clearing a height of 17-0 3/4. Texas-Arlington's Jeff Rodriguez cleared the same height. The Gophers' Brock Spandl finished fifth at 16-10 3/4.
Minnesota has now won 51 titles in the history of the Drake Relays.
Minnesota’s 4 x 1,600-meter relay of Paul Hilsen, Mike Torchia, Hassan Mead and Andy Richardson finished third in a time of 16:40.29. Wisconsin, with Burnsville High School alumnus Rob Finnerty running the third leg, won the event.
The Gophers' 4 x 100-meter relay ran 41.47, but failed to advance to finals, while the 4x400-meter relay was disqualified.
In the long jump, Addison Demer placed third with a career-best leap of 24-3 3/4. Oladipo Fagbemi was ninth with a jump of 23-3 1/4. In the shot put, Trey Davis added a third-place showing with a season-best effort of 57-11.
Gopher Women ... The Gopher women had their four-year winning streak in the Drake Relays 4 x 800-meter relay snapped by Kansas State on Friday. The Golden Gophers finished third in 8:37.54 seconds. Running the relay for Minnesota was Nikki Swenson, Katie Hill, Jamie Dittmar and Elizabeth Yetzer.
Hill and Dittmar were also members of the Gophers’ distance medley relay that recorded a third-place showing in a time of 11:29.23. Missa Varpness and Stephanie Price, who helped the Gophers to the 4 x 1600-meter relay crown on Thursday, completed the DMR foursome.
Keeping with the bronze medal theme, Samantha Sonnenberg added a third-place finish in the pole vault with a leap of 13 feet, 1 1/2 inches.
Thrower Nikki Tzanakis posted the top finish among the Gophers competing on Friday at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. Tzanakis finished second in the discus with a throw of 170-7, her second-best effort of the season.
Also at Penn, the 4x100-meter relay placed seventh in the College Final with a time of 45.58 seconds. Handling the baton for the Gophers was Todea-Kay Willis, Nyoka Giles, Chimerem Okoroji and Alena Brooks. Okoroji, Giles and Brooks, along with Sharyn Dahl, ran to an 11th-place finish in the sprint medley in a time of 3:57.75.

Reviewing and Previewing the Elite Meet
Down the Backstretch had the honor again this year of providing a meet review and preview for the program of tonight's Hamline Elite Meet.
To get folks in the mood for meet -- whether they plan to attend in person or follow the action live on DtB starting at 5:15 p.m. -- we're posting the piece here as well.
Entering its sixth year, the Hamline Elite Meet has created an album’s worth of memories for the athletes, coaches, parents, and fans fortunate enough to share in this unique track and field competition. On the nine-lane Klas Field track before you and on the fields in and around the red oval, Minnesota’s top high school track and field athletes have waged homestretch battles, set records, and confirmed their status as the “elite” of their sport.
Tonight, another bumper crop of Minnesota’s finest is destined to etch new athletic feats into memory for themselves and for anyone fortunate enough to witness their exploits. With talent, perseverance, and a dash of good fortune, we’ll witness efforts tonight like those that stay with us from previous Hamline Elite Meets.
Like, the double victory Alicia Rue earned in the inaugural 2006 Elite Meet. The future Golden Gopher All-American became the meet’s first double winner, winning the 100-meter hurdles and establishing what is still the meet record in the pole vault at 12-3.
And who can forget Mike Torchia and his win in the 2006 Elite Meet 3200m? The Rochester Lourdes star ran a solo 8:59.19 -- a mark that remains the meet record despite challenges to it by the remarkable crop of distance runners in the years that followed.
Fans at the 2007 meet saw Forest Lake’s Kristie Buerkle establish meet records in the 200m and 400m. In boys’ action, Irondale’s Andy Richardson established himself as a fan favorite winning the first of two consecutive 1600m crowns with his patented kamikaze start and furious finish.
Despite the rain at the 2008 meet, Wayzata’s Jordan Helgren, Minnesota’s most decorated female triple-jumper, won her signature event in a meet record 37-11 ¾. Likewise, Kasson-Mantorville’s Micah Hegerle found enough footing in the discus circle to mark a meet record 179-11.
In 2009, on a chilly April night, fans left Klas Field buzzing about Buffalo’s Zach Mellon and his “double triple.” Mellon won an unprecedented third straight Elite Meet 800m crown and was a triple winner at the meet itself, anchoring the Bison’s champion 4x 400 and 4 x 800 meter relay teams. In the field, Blaine’s Nicole Murphey defended her long jump title with a record-setting leap of 18-1 ¾.
Last year, Bagley/Fosston’s Analisa Huschle made the headlines becoming the first athlete to win three individual events at the Elite Meet. Huschle topped Murphey in the long jump, won the triple jump with a 37-2 ¾ mark, and took the 200m in 25.43.
This year Huschle, the Minnesota all-time record-holder in the long jump, will attempt her triple again. Whether or not she succeeds could depend on the exploits of another athlete attempting to win three events at the meet. Richfield sophomore Jessica January, the fastest 100m and 300m hurdler in the state last year, will attempt to win those events as well as the long jump at tonight’s meet.
Other girls’ events to pay close attention to include the 800m, where Fergus Falls’ Haylie Zenner, the event record-holder, aims to win her third-straight Elite Meet title; the 400m and 3200m, where defending champions and meet record-holders Erica Dombro of Highland Park and Maria Hauger of Shakopee will try to defend their 2010 crowns; and the discus where St. Francis’ Maggie Ewen seeks to defend her 2010 title.
On the boys side, Red Wing’s Luke Johnson will attempt to defend the shot put and discus crowns he won last year; defending 300m hurdle champ Jerome Begin of Buffalo looks to defend his title and improve upon his meet record; and Edina’s Devin Crawford-Tufts, the second-faster Minnesota high school 100m runner of all time and #5 all-time at 200m, will attempt to win the Elite Meet sprint double.
But, expect surprises too! In competition like the Hamline Elite Meet, it’s impossible to predict who might emerge unexpectedly victorious. Perhaps some unheralded athlete will make the Elite Meet stage his or her own, and add to the history of the meet in one smashing effort, etching new memories into the annals of this unique athletic event.

Gopher Women Win Drake 4 x 1600m Again
Is it officially a Drake dynasty?
For the third straight year and the fifth time in the last six editions of "America's Athletic Classic," the University of Minnesota women are the Drake Relays 4 x 1600-meter relay champions.
Yesterday, the Gopher quartet of Nikki Swenson, Missa Varpness, Stephanie Price, and Elizabeth Yetzer teamed to win the event in 19:06.52, outrunning Iowa, the runners-up at 19:17.52.
Anchorwoman Yetzer, who took the baton from Price in second place, collected her fourth career Drake Relays title in the 4 x 1600m. She is the first Gopher to accomplish the feat. Overall, the Lakeville North alumnus has won five Drake titles in her Gopher career.
“All the previous legs had run strong,” Yetzer said in a Gopher media release. “I was okay to be in second place. I was actually excited that I got to race someone. It was an advantage for me because I got to tuck behind the Iowa runner and avoid the wind a little bit.”
The Minnesota men kicked off competition at Drake as well. Mike Shelendich ran 1:54.39 for fifth in the unseeded 800-meter run. Joe McFarland placed 10th in the race with a time of 1:56.01.
Kevin Lachowitzer was 9th in the 5,000 meters running 14:19.15.

Defending Champs Returning to TC 1 Mile
Two-time event winner David Torrence and Olympian Anna Pierce will return to defend their USA 1 Mile Road titles at the Medtronic TC 1 Mile in downtown Minneapolis on May 12, event organizer Twin Cities In Motion announced today.
The pair will battle for $22,500 in prize money, plus a pair of $10,000 time bonuses.
Torrence, the men’s record-holder on the Nicollet Mall course, is the lone runner to break four-minutes in the six-year history of the event. The San Francisco resident clocked 3 minutes, 59.3 seconds for his victory in 2009. Last year, Torrence confirmed his mastery of the event winning in 4:04.0.
Torrence’s 2009 barrier-breaking win kept his budding racing career alive, thanks to the $10,000 bonus he earned for his sub-4:00 winning time.
“It was probably one of the biggest breaks for my career as a post-collegiate athlete,” Torrence said in a media release. “At the time, I was unsponsored and living off of prize money from races. By crossing the line first under 4 minutes, I received the generous $10,000 bonus that essentially funded my running career for the next year. The financial security that winning the race brought allowed me to train full time and improve drastically.”
To date, the $10,000 women’s time bonus for a winning time under 4:32.0 has yet to be claimed. Shannon Rowbury, the 2009 champion, has come closest, setting the course record at 4:33.4. Defending champion Pierce, however, has her sights set on a both a win and a course record time in 2011. She won last year’s race in 4:34.6.
“Last year was my first time running the one mile race in Minneapolis, so I understand the course much better this year,” the Mammoth Lakes, California resident said. “I’m anticipating a good race and hope to break the course record. It was a very fun race and I am looking forward to coming back to run it again this year! I was impressed with the waves of runners and the crowds were so supportive.”
The USA 1 Mile Road Championship races are just two of seven waves of racing taking place on May 12, Racing at the Medtronic TC 1 Mile kicks off at 6:50 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, and culminates with the USA Championships races at 7:53 p.m. (women) and 8:03 p.m. (men).

Yes/No: Willis Over 20-Feet at LSU Long Jump?
The University of Minnesota Women are running at two track meets this weekend. Many team members are at LSU competing in the Alumni Gold Open. The rest of the squad is running in the Iowa Musco Twilight Meet. This is the last track meet for the team before the Drake Relays and then the Conference, Regional, and National Meets.
LSU is among the very few elite track teams in the nation, year in and year out. The present season is no exception and the Lady Tigers currently sit at #2 in the national track rankings.
The long jump will showcase some of those great athletes and the Gophers will counter with their best horizontal jumper - Todea-Kay Willis. How will she fare in Louisiana...

Willis has jumped 20-1 and 19-10 3/4 in her two outdoor meets in April. During the indoor season, Willis jumped over 20 feet twice including 20-3 to place second at the Big Ten Indoor Conference Meet. In 2010, Willis won the Big Ten Outdoor Conference Meet with a leap of 20-9 1/4.

Spandl Shares Big Ten Weekly Honor
Minnesota pole vaulter and multi-eventer Brock Spandl was named the Co-Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Week after his debut decathlon last weekend.
Spandl placed second at the California Invitational Decathlon scoring 7384 points, the sixth-best score in Gopher history in the event. His score tops the Big Ten this season and ranks #17 in the nation.
Spandl’s highest-scoring performance in the decathlon was, not surprisingly, the pole vault. Spandl cleared a season-best 17-0 3/4 in the event.
Spandl shared the weekly honor with Penn State thrower Joe Kovacs.
