Lehmkuhle, Vega to Tune-Up in the Big Easy

Team USA Minnesota athletes Jason Lehmkuhle and Antonio Vega will tune up for the centerpiece race of their spring season by running the 32nd Crescent City Classic 10K this Saturday.

The Easter weekend race in New Orleans draws more than 7000 participants and has a reputation for fast times. The race starts in the city's French Quarter and finishes in City Park.

Lehmkuhle has a road best in the 10K of 28:54, while Vega's personal best at the distance on the roads is 29:05. Both athletes set their PRs at the Peachtree 10K in Atlanta.

Both Lehmkuhle and Vega are using the New Orleans race as preparation for the Boston Marathon on April 19.

Earlier this year, Lehmkuhle won the Mercedes Half Marathon in Birmingham and finished fourth at the USA 15k Championships in Jacksonville, Florida.

Vega, this season, has won the USA Half Marathon Championships in Houston, placed eighth at the
USA Cross Country Championships, and finished third at the USA 15k Championships.

Maxwell a Record-Breaker at USA Masters

Ninety-year-old Richville, Minnesota resident Ralph Maxwell was the local headliner at last weekend's USA Master Indoor Championships in Boston, winning seven gold medals and setting two world age-group records.

USATF Minnesota Masters chairman Tom Langenfeld sent DtB this report on the Minnesota goings-on at USA Masters"

" ... Maxwell entered the M90 group impressively. Gold medals and world records in the pentathlon and 60m hurdles. Gold medals and American records (I think) in the 60m (11.63) and triple jump (5.52m/18-1.5). Gold medals in the 200m (43.92), high jump (1.05m/3-5.25 – 1 cm below the world record) and long jump (2.85m/9-4.25). And he also threw the shot – second of two competitors.

"Thom Weddle followed his first place in the M70 3000m with a second in the mile (6:13.98). Jim Sheehan dropped down to take on a strong field of sprinters in the M60 400m Saturday – finished seventh (in a field of 17), but set a Minnesota masters record at 64.71. He came back with a fourth in the 800m on Sunday (2:27.50) and then ran a leg on the So Cal Track Club’s gold medal M60-69 4x400 relay team.

"Jim Schoffman finished fourth in the M55 400 on Saturday (58.44) and eighth in a field of 14 in the M55 800m on Sunday (2:25.07), then ran a leg on the Mass Velocity Track Club’s winning M50-59 4x400 relay team. Jim also made the finals in the 60m, finishing eighth, and placed tenth in the 200m."

Langenfeld, a 30-time USA Masters high jump champion, himself, was unable to compete in this year's meet due to upper back injury.

Complete results of the USA Masters meet can be found HERE.

Smyth and Brown Compete at World Cross

Team USA Minnesota's Patrick Smyth and Emily Brown closed out a successful cross country season at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland on Sunday.

Smyth was the first American finisher in the Senior Men's event. He ran 34:51 over the 12k course and finished in 36th place. Smyth led the U.S. squad to a ninth place finish.

Smyth was competing at World Cross for the first time and came away with some memories and more fuel for the fire. "I'm happy with my race, but not ecstatic. For my first world cross country championships, I more than held my own. I hope to be back here next year. I knew the start was going to be crazy, but not be real conservative, so I wanted to get a good spot. I didn't really move up a lot. This race will give me confidence going into the season."

Brown was a member of the bronze medal winning U.S. squad in the senior women 8k race. Competing in her second World Cross Country meet, Brown finished 41st in 26:53. The team bronze medal was the first for the U.S. in the senior women's event since 2003. The Americans finished behind only Kenya and Ethiopia who combined for individual places one through nine.

Emily Brown has competed this year with a recently diagnosed asthma condition and was able to keep her race in perspective. "Today went a lot better than the NACAC meet a few weeks ago. You always want to be a scoring member of the US team, but you look at the starting line at your teammates, and you realize that not only are you on the line with the best in the country, but some of the best in the world. We knew who we were going against in the team race, and we knew that the people who weren't going to score needed to stay as high up as possible."

Road Conditions: A Pavement Primer

There's lot's going on in the world of Minnesota road racing these days. Here's a news digest to help you catch up:

Team Circuit Kicks Off ... The USATF Minnesota Team Circuit presented by Twin Cities in Motion will kick off on Sunday with the St. Patrick's Day Human Race 8K in St. Paul.

The nine-race series, which culminates in October with TCM's own Medtronic TC 10 Mile, pits the state's top club teams against one-another in road races ranging in distance from the mile to the marathon.

The complete Team Circuit schedule can be found HERE.

In 2009 TC Running Company won the men's open Team Circuit title, while Run N Fun prevailed in the women's open division. TC Running Company also swept the men's masters and grand masters titles. The Foley & Mansfield masters and St. Cloud River Runners grand masters squads won on the women's side.

Raabe to Return to Grandma's ... 2009 Grandma's Marathon champion Chris Raabe, a Sauk Rapids native, plans to return to Duluth to defend his title in June. Raabe confirmed his intention is this week's issue of Out Front, Grandma's Marathon's promotional newsletter.

Raabe won a surprise victory in last year's race, pulling away from his challengers at the 15 mile mark. Raabe, who suffered a dislocated patella and bruised ribs in an automobile accident last fall, will attempt to become only the third man to win consecutive Grandma's titles, joining fellow Minnesotan Dick Beardsley (1981-81) and Kenyan Patrick Muturi (1996-97).

Stillwater Marathon News ... The Stillwater Marathon, scheduled for May 30, signed national retailer Dick's Sporting Goods as its presenting sponsor, the race announced yesterday. The Stillwater marathon, entering its second year, will be one of ten U.S. races that are part of the chain's National Runners’ Month program.

The initiative is designed to promote running and highlight Dick's commitment to serving runners throughout the United States. The ten race roster also includes the Pittsburgh Marathon, the Boulder to Boulder in Colorado, the Ridge Run in Chicago, and the Palos Verde Marathon in Los Angeles.

For more information on the Stillwater Marathon, click HERE.

Medtronic TC 1 Mile 75% Full ... Registration for the Medtronic TC 1 Mile is currently 75% full, according to race organizers Twin Cities in Motion. The May 13 event, which will host the USA Mile Championships for men and women, has an entrant limit of 3200 athletes.

Find more information on the TC 1 Mile HERE.

Yes/No: Minnesotan in Top-35 at World Cross?

It's gotten to be a habit: Team USA Minnesota shows their might every spring by qualifying multiple runners for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. The big difference this year is that the team does not include Team USA Minnesota veterans Jason Lehmkuhle, Matt Gabrielson or Katie McGregor, who, combined, have participated in ten World Cross events. The relative newcomers traveling from Minnesota to Bydgoszcz, Poland this year are Emily Brown and Patrick Smyth.

Let us know how the locals will stack up against the best runners in the world this Sunday:

Y/N: Will a Team USA Minnesota runner finish in the top 35 at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Poland on Sunday?

Emily Brown will run her second World Cross meet this year. She placed 18th in 2008 and led the U.S. women to a fourth place finish in the team competition. Brown was a four-time All-American at the University of Minnesota and was the USA Cross Country Champion in 2009. She finished 7th at the USA Cross Country Championships last month.

Patrick Smyth finished 2nd to Dathan Ritzenhein at the 2010 USA Cross Country Championships and will lead the U.S. squad going to Poland. Smyth graduated from Notre Dame in 2009 as a decorated collegiate runner and has since transitioned to professional running and similar success. Upon joining Team USA Minnesota he has contended for National titles at various distances including a runner-up finish in the 1/2 marathon championships this year. Smyth will run in his first World Cross on Sunday.

To play our game, simply type "yes" or "no" into the subject line of an e-mail and send it to us at DtBFantasy [AT] gmail [DOT] com before 8:00 A.M. CST, Sunday, March 28th. Please put your answer in the subject line of the e-mail and make sure your full name appears somewhere in the e-mail. We will continue to offer a bonus for participants making their debut in Yes/No - a correct answer will be worth two points for any first-time players.

My answer: No

Ten contestants correctly answered yes to the question - Y/N: Will a University of Minnesota athlete win the Pole Vault at the Baldy Castillo Invitational over a field that includes Olympic Champion Nick Hysong.

The lead pack is now down to three prognosticators, tied with seven points: Gloria Jansen, Toby Hatlevig, and Chad Bjugan.

To see these results, please visit DtBFantasy Corner.

Good luck and thanks for playing Yes/No on DtB!

Blankenship, Dorniden Earn Accolades

USA Track & Field - Minnesota announced recently that Ben Blankenship and Heather Dorniden are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for March 2010.

Blankenship, a junior at the University of Minnesota, was recognized for winning the conference title in the mile run at the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships last month. Blankenship's win in 4:05.64 helped power the Gopher's runaway team victory at the meet.

A week later, the Stillwater High School graduate became the first Gopher to break four minutes in the mile, running 3:57.87 in Seattle.

Dorniden, a member of Team USA Minnesota and a U of M alum, was honored for finishing third at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque last month. The University of Minnesota graduate clocked a personal indoor best time of 2:02.33 in the event.

Gophers Open Outdoor Seasons

The University of Minnesota track and field teams got flying starts on the 2010 outdoor season with southern spring break trips.

The defending Big Ten outdoor champion men spent time in Arizona, competing at the Baldy Costello Invitational hosted by Arizona State.

There's a re-cap of the Gopher men's action HERE.

Results of the Baldy Costello meet are HERE.

The Gopher women opened the season in South Carolina at the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina University.

Girls' All-Time Lists: 3200 Meters

We've published all-time Minnesota boys' performance lists on DtB for the last three years, but until now we haven't had the opportunity to publish similar performance lists for Minnesota high school girls. Thanks to Champlin Park cross country and distance coach Kevin Moorhead, however, we can now begin to do so.

Moorhead, starting with lists fashioned by Bill and Tim Miles compliling top girls' performances from 1972 until 1993, has updated many of the lists' running events through 2009. Unlike the boys' lists, the girls' all-time lists only include performances made during the "regular season" of Minnesota track and field -- i.e., performances in meets up to and including the MSHSL State Meet.

Moorhead stresses that the lists are "living documents," so he encourages corrections and amendments that come to light thanks to publication. Moorhead can be contacted at:
