Susan Loyd Sixth in 400 at World Masters

At the World Masters Championships, Susan Loyd qualified third in her W55 400m heat (75.44) – and finished sixth in the finals (75.54).  The US W55 4X400 team finished fifth today, but it's not clear if Susan was one of the runners as team members were not listed.
She faced some formidable competition in the 400.  The winner, Marie Mathieu, 56, of Puerto Rico, had a faster time (61.20) in the women's preliminaries than any of the men in their 55-59 heats.  Her 60.56 in the women’s finals would have placed fifth in the men’s final.  She also won the W55 100m and 200m.--from Tom Langenfeld

UMD Wins Women's Title, Augustana the Men's at NSIC XC Championships

University of Minnesota Duluth won the women's title, Augustana the men's at the NSIC Cross Country Championships in South Dakota on Saturday.  University of Mary's Jennifer Agnew took the women's individual title in 20:35.02 for 6K.  Augustana's Paul Yak led his team to a dominating performance in the men's race winning the individual title in 25:07.7 for 8K.

UMD was led by the duo of freshman Samatha Rivard and sophomore Hannah Olson, who were fourth and fifth in 21:29.45 and 21:32.74.  Junior Alexandra Rudin was seventh in 21:42.41, freshman Breanna Colbenson was tenth in 21:57.27, and sophomore Erica Seidenkranz placed in 22:23.92. The individual race was expected to be a battle between Agnew and Augustana's Runa Falch, this year's Griak DII winner who set a new course record at the event.  Falch finished fourteenth and was the team's third finisher on Saturday. Women's results are HERE.

Yak, who won his third consecutive NSIC XC title, led an Augustana pack that captured to five of the top six places with the only interloper being Sioux Falls' Matt Horan's in third in 25:25.77. Norwegian brother's Tom(second/25:24.23) and Harald(fourth/25:26.16) Karbo, Adam Braun(fifth/25:31.82) and John Klecker(25:31.99) gave the hosts 18 points and the championship trophy. The team win was the fifth straight NSIC team title for Augustana.  Men's results are HERE.

Photo ID: Don Hurley

Don Hurley then...Photo by Jim Ferstle

One of the reasons to do the Photo ID feature is to impart some knowledge, a little history.  Give more information on people and/or events from the past. So, we'll also try and follow up the Photo ID's with a story, more info on who, what, and why this person or event shown in the photos are worth revisiting. We began with this photo of then high school champion, Don Hurley.

Hurley's career as a runner was too short.  His early years at Cretin High School were divided between running and his first love in sports, hockey.  He wanted to play for the Gophers.  He wanted to play for legendary coach Herb Brooks, but his athletic talent was in another arena.

He discovered at Cretin that he was pretty good at running.  His first coach, Bill Miles, who left Cretin to coach at Wayzata, had these parting words for Hurley: "Promise me you'll keep running."  Don kept that promise and won two MSHSL cross country titles.
...Don Hurley now.
ShoreMaster photo
He went on to help the University of Minnesota win the Big Ten Championship, ran a "four minute mile equivalent" 3:43 in the 1,500 and was a national class steeplechaser.  He'd done all that by age 21 and it appeared his future was bright.  Instead of pursuing a career in the working world, he followed his athletic dreams, but his body had other plans.  Injuries had set him back during his college career and they ended his post collegiate one. "I pulled the trigger way too fast," he says today.  "When you get to that level, you have to look in the mirror," he says.

He was typical of many athletes who had promise and went full bore after their dreams.  Injuries were just another hurdle to clear.  At 21, he says now, the possibilities seemed limitless, but by 25 his running career was over.  Cartilage damage to his right knee became so bad that his knee "swelled like a basketball," he says.  But he wasn't going to let that stop him.  He had the doctors drain the knee and got back to training.  The dream died hard.

The damage to the right knee was so bad that he still has issues. He says that one of the things he wished was available during his time is better medical information and treatment.  He's noted that runners in this today's era of advanced sports medicine recover from similar injuries that didn't end so well for him.  The grit your teeth and run through it era has given way to a more intelligent approach to training with more knowledge, better equipment, and the concept that staying healthy is one of the major keys to a successful athletic career.

Another thing Hurley likes from the present day is the sportsmanship and collegiality of today's young athletes.  Instead of in his time where for many the approach was more "military," and your opponents were to be defeated, not associated with, todays athletes communicate via social media.  His son, Keeghan, the top ranked runner in Class A, he says, is friends with Obsa Ali, who is the top runner in Class AA.  On the course they compete just as hard as the athletes of his time, but off the course they are just people who share a common passion.

Both his son Keeghan and older brother Mike got their start in sports with swimming, but both also have running talent.  Mike ran a 50.62 quarter in high school, but swimming was his sport.  He was Minnesota Swimmer of the Year in 2009, set and broke his own state record in the 200 Individual Medley, and now is a junior at traditional US swim power, Indiana.  Keeghan has lost only once this year in pursuit of a Class A individual XC title and a repeat team title for Perham.  If he does win State this year, it is believed that it would be the only father/son duo ever to both win a MSHSL Cross Country title.

Despite the fact that his years as a runner are in the distant past, Hurley has taken the drive and dedication that led to sports success and applied it to the business world.  He is the president of ShoreMaster, "a premier manufacturer of waterfront equipment," and does a mean Elvis impersonation. To demonstrate to his kids that he's fluent in social media, he has his own website HERE. Aside from Elvis(on the humor tab), there is a photo of Gopher teammate John Idstrom during a fishing outing the pair had in Montana.

Yes/No: How many under Bill Andberg's mark at Grey Ghost 5K?

The 28th annual Anoka Halloween Grey Ghost 5k will take place in the "Halloween Capital of the World"on Saturday.  The Grey Ghost race has something for everyone; some will appreciate the flat, fast course as an opportunity for a personal best.  Others will relish the chance to wear a Halloween costume in a road race.  Even if you simply want to get your run in before the Grand Day Parade in Anoka, this is the race for you.

Before creating this long-time Anoka road race, Bill Andberg made his mark as a world class age-group runner.  He took over 30 years off from competitive running before rejoining the fray at age 55.  During the next 30+ years, he set more than 30 national and world records for his age categories.  Andberg won a gold medal in the first USA Nationals in 1968 (marathon) and in the first World Masters Championships in 1975 (3K and 1500).

We will use one of Andberg's great records as the standard for this week's question..

Yes/No: Will 18 or more runners at the Anoka Grey Ghost run faster than Bill Andberg's (at the time) world age-best 18:33 5k as a 65 year old?

Make sure to play the Photo ID contest this week as we will be giving an extra point to anyone that answers correctly.

To check out previous years Grey Ghost results go to the Appleraceberryjam Road Results Archives page HERE.  Then click on Anoka Grey Ghost 5k Run and All Available (years).

Or if you would rather I do the work for you, here are the number of runners that ran faster than 18:33:
2012 - 23, 2011 - 15, 2010 - 11, 2009 - 13, 2008 - 14, 2007 - 33, 2006 - 25, 2005 - 24, 2004 - 29, 2003 - 34, 2002 - 28, 2001 - 24, 2000 - 47, 1999 - 48.

To play our game, simply type "yes" or "no" into the subject line of an e-mail and send it to us at DtBFantasy [AT] gmail [DOT] com before 12:50 P.M. CDT, Saturday, October 26th.  Please put your answers in the subject line of the e-mail and make sure your full name appears somewhere in the e-mail.  We will offer a bonus for participants making their 2013 debut in Yes/No - a correct answer will be worth two points for anyone who has not played yet this year.

My Answer:  Yes

The question in last week's Yes/No Contest was: Will more women than men qualify for the 2015 Boston Marathon at the Mankato Marathon on Sunday?  The answer was no -- by my count, 35 men ran a Boston qualifier while 21 women achieved that goal.  The men's winner was Eric Thies and the women's race was won by Amy Halseth.   Nine players answered correctly this week and Dimitri Drekonja tied Lori Anne Schwiesow in first place with 22 points.  Mary Varney has 21 points and Pat Foley is at 20 points.

This running legend was something of a triple threat in his youth.  He snow shoed, he ran, and he bowled.  He was a champion in all three.  Part of his legend was training in a cemetary during his senior years because back then because running around in shorts and a singlet was not a common site, especially for the "senior" population.  One of his compatriots, Dr. Alex Ratelle used to run at night because he didn't want to be seen in the daylight for fear of what the neighbors would think. Who is this unmasked man?  Who is the woman in the top photo presenting him with an award?

Last week's Photo ID answer:  Dennis Barker

After two weeks of introduction to our new contest, this time we will increase the stakes.  Anyone who answers the photo ID correctly this week will receive an extra point in the Yes/No contest.

Nine individuals answered correctly in last week's photo ID contest:  Mike Henderson, Rich Cowles, Toby Hatlevig, Andrew Bolland, Daniel Gerber, Jim Glazer, Kevin Ueland, Pat Foley and Patrick Eastman.  Andrew Bolland came through with the first correct answer.

Chelsea Johnson Wins UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invite Title; Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer and Wisconsin Adidas Invite Results

St. Scholastica's Chelsea Johnson won the UW Oshkosh Brooks 6K Invitational title on Saturday in 21:04.1. Johnson broke her own school record and won by twelve seconds.Lucy Cheadle of Washington University-St. Louis was second with a time of 21:16.

Johnson has now won three straight races (Griak, Pre-Nats, Brooks) and has five wins this season. CSS Hall of Famer Desiree Budd is the only other Saint in program history to win three straight races and that took place in both the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Budd won a program-best six races in 2002.

As a team, all five Saints that scored had personal-best times. However, that is not unusual for the fast track at Lake Breeze. The Saints placed thirteenth out of 36 teams with 341 points.

Taylor Gibson (La Crescent, Minn./La Crescent HS) was 77th in 23:14. Andrea Mogren (Forest Lake/Forest Lake HS) was a spot back in 78th with a time of 23:15. Liz Braml (Turtle Lake/Turtle Lake HS) was 89th, finishing in 23:21. The final Saint to score was Jordan Johnson (Poplar/Northwestern HS) in 128th in 23:41.

The meet featured nine teams nationally ranked. Three teams ranked behind the No. 24 Saints, finished ahead of CSS: No. 26 Washington-St. Louis-3rd, No. 25 Willamette (Ore.)-8th and No. 29 DePauw (Ind.)-12th. CSS did finish ahead of Aurora (Ill.), who was ranked 23rd this week.

Defending NCAA Division III champion No. 8 Calvin College (Mich.) won the meet with 71 points. Sixth-ranked University of Chicago was second with 120 points.

The Saints will be at the 2013 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Championships on Saturday, November 2nd in New Brighton at the Brightwood Hills Golf Course.
