Team Circuit Gets Underway with Human Race

The 2011 USATF-Minnesota Team Circuit, presented by Twin Cities In Motion and Lifetime Fitness, kicked off on Sunday with its traditional opener: the St. Patrick's Day Human Race 8K in St. Paul.

Dan Greeno, Minnesota's men's Runner of the Year in 2010 (#240, pictured above) out-ran Moses Waweru (#831) for the individual crown in 24:08.

Greeno's Run N Fun team won a runaway victory in the open men's Team Circuit scoring.

In women's competition, TC Running Company's Jenna Boren (pictured below), won by 50-seconds with her 28:02 on the Summit Avenue out-and-back.

Boston-Focused Goucher Third at NYC Half

Kara Goucher's plan to win this year's Boston Marathon looks like it's back on pace.

Goucher (pictured), the Duluth native who was fighting to return to form after giving birth to a son in September, finished a battling third at yesterday's NYC Half Marathon in Manhattan.

Goucher ran 1:09:03, but was outrun in the final miles by winner Caroline Rotich of Kenya (1:08:52) and countrywoman Edna Kiplagat, runner-up in 1:09:00.

Goucher's result, coming four week's before she's to toe the starting line for Boston, put the 2007 IAAF World Championships 10,000-meter bronze medalist back in the lead pack of contenders for the 115th running of the race from Hopkinton to Boston.

Goucher, who has a 2:25:53 marathon personal best, placed third at the 2009 Boston Marathon.

At Boston this year, Goucher will face a strong field including defending champion Teyba Erkesso of Ethiopia, 2009 Boston winner Salina Koskei of Kenya, and fleet fellow American Desiree Davila. (Find the full elite entrant list for Boston HERE.)

The strong result in New York came after a change in attitude for Goucher. The Duluth East alumnus told Universal Sports, in THIS pre-race story, that after her 7th-place finish at the USA Cross Country Championships in February, she asked coach Alberto Salazar to step up her training.

In men's competition, won by the Salazar-trainer Mo Farah of Great Britain in 1:00:23, Team USA Minnesota's Jason Lehmkuhle finished 16th in 1:02:58.

Yes/No: Carlson Top-50 at World Cross?

Andrew Carlson has won two National Championships in his career and will add World Cross Country participant to his resume this weekend. Team USA will head to Punta Umbria, Spain for the 12K race on Sunday. The six member squad qualified for the meet at the USA Cross Country Championship in San Diego in February.

Carlson will go up against the best distance runners in the world in his first World Cross Country race. How will he fare?

McGregor to Share Distance Running Secrets

Katie McGregor, the Team USA Minnesota athlete who last year was named USA Track and Field's Women's Long Distance Runner of the Year, will share some of the secrets to her success to entrants of the 2011 Grandma's Marathon.

McGregor is the featured speaker at the event's Gearing Up for Grandma's seminar on Saturday, March 26 in Duluth.

Last year, McGregor captured three USA road championships -- at 10 miles, 15K, and 25K -- and placed second at the USA Women’s Marathon Championship in New York with a personal best 2:31:01.

Other Gearing Up for Grandma’s presenters include: hometown star Eric Hartmark, Grandma's Marathon medical director Ben Nelson, dietitian Heather Pitschka, and footwear experts Jim and Mary Stukel.

William A Irvin 5K to Open ... Registration for the 18th annual William A. Irvin 5K opens at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, March 17.

The field limit for the 2011 race is 1700 — an increase of 200 from last year when the capacity was reached in less than a week. To register, visit GrandmasMarathon.com beginning Thursday. The entry fee is $30.

The race takes place Friday, June 17, near the permanently docked William A. Irvin ore boat on Duluth’s waterfront and is the first of three running events during Grandma's Marathon weekend.

Registration remains open for the 35th annual Grandma’s Marathon set for Saturday, June 18.

The entry process for the 21st annual Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon is closed.

Carlson to Compete at World Cross Country

Team USA Minnesota's Andrew Carlson will don a USA uniform again this weekend when he represents his country at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Punta Umbria, Spain.

Carlson, who finished 8th at the USA Cross Country Championships in February, gained a spot on the six-man open men's squad after higher-placing athletes opted out of the international meet.

Carlson has represented the USA previously as a member of two IAAF World Half Marathon teams, the IAAF World 20K team, and two Chiba Ekiden teams.

Joining the University of Minnesota alumnus on the men's team are Andrew Bumbalough , Ben True, Brian Olinger, and Max King.

Olympic bronze medalist Shalane Flanagan leads the open women's squad, which also includes 2003 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon champion Blake Russell.

Heath Wins Minnesota-Packed NCAA 3000m

Using a furious drive to the finish line, Winona native Elliott Heath won his first NCAA Indoor title in a 3000-meter race where a trio of Minnesota athletes stormed the podium.

Heath, who competes for Stanford University, won the event in 8:03.7, outkicking the University of Minnesota's Ben Blackenship, the runner-up in 8:04.65. Justin Tyner, the Brianerd High School alum who competes for Air Force, was 5th in 8:05.57.

Earlier in the meet, Heath had finished 5th in the 5000m in 13:34.54, while Blankenship, A Stillwater High School alum, made his mark on the meet with a 3:54.61 1600m anchor leg for the University of Minnesota's 3rd-place DMR.

Team USA Minn. Women Strong at 15K

A strong performance by Team USA Minnesota's women's contingent netted the Minnesota-based training group the women's team title at the USA 15K Championships in Jacksonville, Florida.

Newly-signed Megan Hogan, who made her professional debut in the race, finished third in the race in 49:57, leading a flood of Team USA Minnesotans into the finish chute. Meghan Armstrong finished fifth in a PR 51:18, while defending champion Katie McGregor was sixth in 51:21.

Jen Rhines won the women's race in 49:31; Nan Kennard was second in 49:56.

“My goal was to stick with the lead pack and see how things went from there,” Hogan said in a Team USA Minnesota media release. “At three miles, Jen picked it up and Nan went with her. I just kept them in my sights. At the top of the bridge (between 8 and 9 miles) I caught up to Nan, but then she had a really good down hill kick and got away from me. I almost caught her again on the flat going into the finish line but she held me off."

“My goal was top 10 and I had hoped for top five so I was really pleased with the results," the George Washington University alumnus added. "I have been training on the treadmill over the winter and just joined Team USA Minnesota, so I was really curious to see where I was at with my fitness. I am excited that our women won the team competition. It’s fun to train and compete with them and to do so well together. I needed a good confidence builder so this race was a great way to kick off my season.”

Two Team USA Minnesota's men competed in the race: Josh Moen finished 11th in a PR 44:16; Matt Gabrielson was 20th in 44:56.

USA 15K Championships ... Six Team USA Minnesota athletes, including defending women's champion Katie McGregor and 2008 victor Andrew Carlson, will compete at the USA 15K Championships in Jacksonville, Florida tomorrow.

Joining the current and former champ will be teammates Meghan Armstrong, Megan Hogan, Josh Moen, and Matt Gabrielson.

Minnesota Pole Vault Showcase ... Closer to home, Fuzion Athletics will host the Minnesota Pole Vault Showcase in Burnsville tomorrow. The pole vault-only meet will feature high school, open, and elite events.

Among the stars competing in the "Elite Show" -- a competition featuring prize money and an equalized competition between men and women -- are Jacob Pauli, who sports a 19-1 PR, and Mary Saxer, the top-seeded woman at 14-9.

H.S. Girls' All-Time Lists: Pole Vault

Today we're posting the final installment (at least for now) of "Moorhead's Lists," Champlin Park coach Kevin Moorhead's compilation of the all-time best Minnesota high school girls' track and field performers.

With the pole vault, we'll have exhausted the events where the lists are up-to-date. Next week, we'll begin posting the "Miles' Lists," the 2010 and all-time boys' performance lists compiled by Tim and Bill Miles.

If the final girls' lists are completed later this spring, we'll, of course, post them here.

Four Minnesotans Win USA Masters Titles

Four Minnesota masters track and field athletes won a total of nine USA Masters titles at last weekend's USA Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships held in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Ralph Maxwell, a 91-year-old who splits his time between Richville, Minnesota and Alamo, Texas, won five events in the M90 division: the high jump (3-5 1/4), long jump (7-11 1/4), triple jump (17-9 1/2), shot put (23-2), and pentathlon (3952). His time in pentathlon 60m hurdles (15.39), broke his own world record in the event.

He also finished second in the 60-meters (11.65).

Thom Weddle, 72, of Minneapolis, won the M70 3,000 meters (13:02.24) and mile (6:30.17). He also finished third in the 800m (2:56.26).

Tweety Wolf, 55, of Watertown, won the W55 400m (1:07.79), and finished second in both the 800m (2:41.20) and mile (6:22.08). She also ran on two medal-winning relay teams.

She and Kathy Haubrich of Shakopee, made up half a W50-59 non-club 4x400 relay team that turned in a world record time of 4:36.11 – more than seven seconds faster than the old record.

The Minnesota pair were part of the winning non-club W50-59 4x200 team with 2:01.70.

Tom Langenfeld, 75, of Edina, won the M75 high jump on misses at 4-5 – one centimeter better than the listed American age-group indoor record. The victory was Langenfeld's 32nd career masters high jump title.

Other Minnesota medalists included: Lance Elliott of Edina, who took second in the M40 mile (4:49.73); Haubrich, who finished fourth in both the M50 400m (1:10.81) and 800m (2:44.17); Shawn Regan of Minneapolis who was sixth in both the M60 400m (1:03.24) and the 800m (2:37.57); and Mike Moser of Minneapolis, who, despite injury, competed in the M60 pentathlon finishing seventh.

Moser also ran 400m and 800m legs on non-club relay teams.

Pick 10: NCAA Indoor Championships

It's championship weekend for the collegiate ranks. The NCAA Indoor Championships for Division I, Division II and Division III will all be held on Friday and Saturday - March 11 - 12. The University of Minnesota will send a handful of athletes to College Station, Texas. An NSIC contingent will compete at the Division II championship hosted by Adams State in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Finally, many athletes from the MIAC will head off to Capital University in Columbus, Ohio for the Division III champs.

Pick Ten has a simple concept: predict the finish place for each of 10 Minnesota athletes at the Indoor National Championship meets. You will score points for each athlete who scores at or above the finish place you predict for them, following the 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring system.

For example: If you pick Elliot Heath to place first in the 5K, and he places first, you get 10 points. If you pick Heath to place first and he finishes second, you get zero points. If you pick Heath to finish third in the race and he places first, second or third, you get 6 points, since you that's the place you picked him for.

Elliot Heath has the second-best 5000 meter time in the nation this year. He has run 13:37 and is just a fraction of a second behind #1-seed Sam Chalenga. (The Winona native will also compete in the 3K, which is not part of our contest.) Micah Hegerle is currently ranked #3 on the entry lists for the National Meet. The Gophers sophomore will make his National Meet debut in 2011. Hegerle's teammate - Ben Peterson will also compete at his first National Meet. Peterson's best vault this year is tied for #5 on the D1 charts.

Kristi Buerkle has run 54.92 indoors and currently sits #2 on the 400 meter entry list. Buerkle is only 9/100ths of a second behind the seed time of the top 400 meter runner going into the meet. Lauren Stelten is one of only two female D2 athletes to pole vault over 4 meters this year. She is ranked second on the National Meet entry list.

Rebecca Stier has the #5 throw among D2 women in the shot put in 2011. Another NSIC athlete - Laquone Robinson will compete in the Heptathlon. Robinson is seeded #4 in the hep with a score of 5005.

Brannen McKeag goes into the National Meet with the second best toss in the shot put. The MIAC champion from Hamline will attempt to become the second straight National Champion from the MIAC after John Schantzen from St. Olaf won last year. Mike Hutton is ranked #5 in the 800 at the National Meet. (Hutton's brother, Nick, will also compete this weekend - he will run the DMR for the Gophers.) Janey Helland is seeded #2 in the pentathlon with the fifth best mark in Division III history.

The fantasy contest question from last week was: "Yes/No: Will Andrew Brueggen break the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet Record in the weight throw?" The answer was yes. Brueggen threw an all-time MIAC record 64-6 3/4. Twenty seven players answered correctly last week, led by overall leader Chris Rivers. Rivers is perfect on the year and followed closely by seven contestants with four points.
