Emily Brown Makes World Cross Team
Brown (pictured), who finished 7th at the USA Cross Country Championships in Spokane, Washington, appeared to have missed making the six-woman team by one heartbreaking place.
When USA Track and Field announced its squads for the meet, however, Brown was part of the team, replacing 6th-place finisher Sara Hall.
Smyth made the men's World Cross squad by virtue of his runner-up finish at the USA Cross Country Championships.

Yes/No: Will a Gopher Beat an Olympic Champ?
The University of Minnesota Men's track team will celebrate their Big Ten Indoor win and 8th-place NCAA finish with a well-deserved trip to Arizona. The Gophers, along with other northern schools including North Dakota and South Dakota, will compete in the Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted by Arizona State.Yes/No will follow the team south, too ...
Y/N: Will a University of Minnesota athlete win the Pole Vault at the Baldy Castillo Invitational over a field that includes Olympic Champion Nick Hysong.
Nick Hysong was the 2000 Olympic gold medalist in the Pole Vault. This year, Hysong has vaulted as high as 17-6 3/4 . The Gophers have entered many of their top vaulters in this event; Big Ten champ Ben Peterson has matched Hysong's vault of 17-6 3/4 this year. Brock Spandl will also compete for the win and has 17-3 1/4 credentials this year. Other Gopher stars in this event include Jack Szmanda and Joe Plencner, who both vaulted 16-8 3/4 indoors. Plencner has an outdoor best of 17-2 3/4.
To play our game, simply type "yes" or "no" into the subject line of an e-mail and send it to us at DtBFantasy [AT] gmail [DOT] com before 6:00 P.M. CST, Saturday, March 20th. Please put your answer in the subject line of the e-mail and make sure your full name appears somewhere in the e-mail. We will continue to offer a bonus for participants making their debut in Yes/No - a correct answer will be worth two points for any first-time players.
My answer: Yes
It was a very low-scoring Pick Ten last week. The winner was Ryan Aylesworth with nine points and thirteen of the twenty two contestants posted a zero for the week.
After seven weeks of Yes/No, there are four contestants who are in first place with six points: Gloria Jansen, Jessie Schoen, Toby Hatlevig and Chad Bjugan.
To see these results, please visit DtBFantasy Corner.
Good luck and thanks for playing Yes/No on DtB!

Local Shoots Running Times Cover Photo
There are all sorts of local angles in the March issue of Running Times magazine. As we noted in the previous post, Minnesota masters legend Jared Mondry is profiled in the issue, which is focused on masters running. But that's not all, local photographer Scott Schneider gets the credit for shooting the issue's cover photo of Colleen DeReuck
Schneider caught DeReuck in action at last October's Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, where the ageless 45-year-old attempted to become the oldest USA Women's Marathon champion.
The South Africa native fell just short in her quest, however. Although, De Reuck led the women's race by more than a minute and a half at 20 miles, she was passed by eventual winner Ilsa Paulson on Summit Avenue and finished second in 2:32:37.
Finding his photo on the cover came as a surprise to Schneider, who is well-known locally for his shooting at running events, cycling races, and hockey games.
"I e-mailed a few photos the day after TCM to Running Times and Runner's World but didn't hear anything," Schneider remembered. "Then in early December, Running Times contacted me about photos of Colleen De Reuck. When she was named Female Masters Runner of the Year, they apparently decided to feature her in the magazine though they didn't say anything about the cover. I sent three or four photos and the rest is history, as they say."
Schneider has two photos inside the magazine as well -- another shot of DeReuck and one of Mondry.
The Running Times cover is Schneider's first national magazine cover photo. Prior to it, Schneider's biggest media play came with a photo from the World Championship Snowmobile Derby in Eagle River, Wisconsin for the front page of the Sunday New York Times.
"Interesting, considering I don't particularly like snowmobiling," Schneider admitted. "I prefer to shoot running, cycling, and hockey though I'm also in it to make money. And, of course, it was the Times."
You can find examples of Schneider's work, HERE, on his web-site.

The Miles' Lists:
Retired and Non-Championship Events
Here are the all-time best marks in boys high school events that have either been discontinued or are no longer contested for championships by the MSHSL.
Last year, the Buffalo High School sprint medley relay team of Ben Stevens, Tim Ernster, Taylor Vick, and Zach Mellon established a new Minnesota all-time best of 3:25.60 in the event, eclipsing the converted-from-yards 3:27.2 by Burnsville in 1978.
With the retired and non-championship events, we complete our publication of the 2009 Miles' Lists -- the comprehensive boys high school performance lists compiled by Wayzata High School coach Bill Miles and his brother Tim Miles, the coach at St. John's University.

McGregor Adds USA 15K Title to Resume
Team USA Minnesota's Katie McGregor has now won national crowns on the track at 10,000 meters and on the roads at 10K (twice), 25K, and, now, 15K, thanks to her runaway win at Saturday's USA 15K Championship.
McGregor (pictured) clocked a PR 49:51 for the distance, bettering runner-up Jen Rhines by 36 seconds at the race in Jacksonville, Florida race held in conjunction with the Gate River Run.
The win redeems a pair of second place finishes by McGregor in the previous two USA 15K Championships. McGregor, however, missed out on the race's $5000 "Equalizer Bonus" for the winner of a handicapped race between the top male and female racers.
McGregor and the rest of the elite women's field started 5 minutes before the elite men and the rest of the event's 13,000 participants, but men's champ Mohamed Trafeh crossed the finish line in 42:58, ahead of McGregor and the rest of the women.
McGregor pocketed $12,000 for her women's victory.
McGregor led a successful day for the Team USA Minnesota crew. In the men's race, Antonio Vega was third in a PR 43:55, Jason Lehmkuhle was 4th in a PR 43:58, and Patrick Smyth was seventh with a 15K debut of 44:42. The men's team, which also included Josh Moen in 20th place at 46:00, won the event's team competition known as the TenBroeck Team Cup.
The Team USA Minnesota women were second in the women's TenBroeck competition with McGregor, Meghan Armstrong and Michelle Frey scoring for the team. Armstrong placed 16th with 53:39 and Frey was 22nd in 54:33.
Emily Brown and Kristen Nicolini did not travel with the team to Jacksonville as previously announced and Matt Gabrielson did not finish.
"Last year the women went out at a lot easier pace than this year," McGregor, part of an eight-member women's lead pack that passed the first mile in 5:12, said. "There were so many people together and I didn't know how long that would last. There was a much deeper field this year with at least 10 women who on any given day could go for the win."
McGregor, who is now being coached by her college mentor Mike McGuire of the University of Michigan, was all alone by 10K, covering that distance in 33:07. By the time McGregor reached the mile long Hart Bridge in the final mile-plus of the race, she had extended her lead by half a minute.
"I never did look back although I was tempted to do so," McGregor said. "I only wanted to run as hard as I could. I wasn't aware of when people dropped back although I was watching for shadows, listening to hear anyone breathing and waiting when the next clapping would start after I passed by the spectators. I never did feel super confident that I had the race won until a spectator yelled on the bridge that I had a 200 meter lead."
"I felt really comfortable the whole time and had one of those days where everything came together," she explained. "I was excited to be able to win today. Even though I had two second place finishes the past two years, I have been happy every time I come here no matter what because I have raced against good people. This is a fun race and it's great to be part of the team challenge as well."

Tollefson Readies for the Big Day
We knew the due date for Carrie Tollefson's pregnancy was fast approaching, so we caught up with the Olympian, USA and NCAA champion, and former Minnesota high school phenom last week to see how things were going. Not that we're surprised or anything, but Tollefson (pictured) is keeping herself very busy. Hear just how busy, below.
Down the Backstretch: We noticed by the calendar that you're less than two months away from your due date. How has the pregnancy gone so far? About what you expected?
Carrie Tollefson: The pregnancy has been going great and I actually have about 5 weeks to go. It has gone by really fast and I can honestly say that I can complain at all. I am still trying to keep my training as my main focus but obviously have tweaked things throughout to make sure the baby and I are both safe.
It has been really fun being pregnant, but I do miss going outside for a nice long run or a really hard session on land. I picked a good winter to not have to train through and it is nice that the footing is starting to get better so maybe I can get out for a few walks/runs before the baby arrives.
DtB: Word is you've been training pretty steadily throughout your term. What have you been doing and how has it gone?
Tollefson: I have been training pretty hard and enjoying every minute of it. I am able to run about 3-6 miles at a time. I could go further but I don't want to hurt anything. I just want to keep my body in tune with the running so I just go at a slow pace and not push it too much. However, I do push it hard when it comes to my underwater treadmill workouts. I do that 2-3 times a week and I do all of my interval training on that.
The treadmill is at Accua in Savage and has been awesome. I highly recommend it for any pregnant runners or anyone with an issue keeping them from doing workouts at full body weight. My trainer at Accua, Kristi Hermann, puts me through my treadmill workouts and has me lifting 2-3 times a week as well. Then to top it off, once a week I meet with my new Agility coach, Bill Welle.
He has helped me work and rebuild my strength and agility during this time. We are hoping to be able to continue doing what we have been up until the end but will have to play it by ear. We all are working so hard to get me back to full strength after the baby and we have made it this far so regardless, it WILL pay off! It has been a great time for me to fully recover from the setbacks I have had over the past few years and address some of my hidden weak spots that might have been holding me back.
DtB: Has it been difficult going from a life focused on being a professional runner, first and foremost, to one centered on the child you're carrying?
Tollefson: My life hasn't changed too much except that the baby is the first thing I think of rather then my run. I get up and evaluate how I am feeling everyday and am as honest and open with Kristi and Bill. We just have to be on the same page and very open to tweaking things as need be.
I am still 100% athlete just with a big belly!
Don't ask me to model my uniform right now but my mind and body are still working hard and keeping 2012 at the forefront. I have been able to still do a few TV gigs and a number of speaking engagements the past 7 months so life really hasn't changed too much. We just can't believe how fast the pregnancy has gone and before you know it, I will be back out racing again and introducing our little one to the running world.
DtB: What else has been keeping you busy recently?
Tollefson: Well it is that time of year again to get ready for the Carrie Tollefson Training Camp. Many people don't understand that my sister and I actually run the camp and actually have all of my family working it. We absolutely love it. So many people assume that all professional athletes just lend their name to camps and don't do much behind the scenes but that is not true at my camp.
My sister, Kammie Jackson, and I run the whole show and we even stay with the kids in the dorms so it keeps us busy from here on out. We love the camp and this will be our 4th year hosting the camp. We encourage the kids to go to my website at www.carrietollefson.com to learn more information about the camp or email us with any questions.
They can register there and should soon. It fills up fast and we already have quite a few kids signed up. It is held at St.Catherine University in St.Paul, July 8-11, 2010. We welcome runners in grades 7-12 and of any ability. It is a great camp with some of the best runners in the nation that counsel and speak to the kids. We learn so much about ourselves there and I am honored to have my name on this camp and help contribute to the running community in any way I can.
Please check it out and one day soon, I hope to have a few camps for the big kids, the adults that love this sport like I do!

Pick Ten: NCAA Indoor Nationals
NCAA National indoor meets are being held in three locations this weekend. Division I will be held in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Division II athletes are traveling to Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Division III meet is in Greencastle, Indiana. Each meet will be held on Friday and Saturday. There are a good number of Minnesotans competing at each meet. To keep tabs on all three we will use the Pick Ten contest again.
Pick Ten has a simple concept: predict the finish for each of 10 Minnesota athletes at NCAA National indoor meets. You will score points for each athletes that scores at or above the finish place you predict for them, following the 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring system.
For example: If you pick Aaron Studt to place first in the shot put at NCAA's, and he places first, you get 10 points. If you pick Studt to place first and he finishes second, you get zero points. If you pick Studt to finish third in the SP and he places first, second or third, you get 6 points, since you that's the place you picked him for.
To play Pick 10, cut and paste the list of names/events below into an e-mail and add your place predictions -- 1st or 2nd or 3rd...8th. Send your predictions by 9:00 A.M. CST on Friday, March 12th to DtBFantasy@gmail.com. Make sure your full name is in the e-mail. We'll announce the winner of this Pick Ten contest next week and keep a running tally of Pick Ten scores from throughout the year to crown a grand champion. As with our Yes/No contests, we don't offer any prizes, so no one needs to fear running afoul of NCAA or other anti-gambling regulations.
Pick 10 ... NCAA National Indoor Meets:
Ben Blankenship (U of M) in the Mile:
Elliott Heath (Stanford) in the 5000:
Aaron Studt (U of M) in the Shot Put:
R.J. McGinnis (U of M) in the Heptathlon:
Alicia Rue (U of M) in the Pole Vault:
Kristi Buerkle (Bemidji State) in the 400:
Heather Miller (St. Clouad State) in the Triple Jump:
Rebecca Stier (Winona State) in the Shot Put:
Jay Quick (Bethel) in the High Jump:
Kaelene Lundstrum (Gustavus) in the Pentathlon:

Good luck!
Last week's Y/N question was: Will more than four teams (men and women) run provisional qualifying times for Nationals in the 4x400 at the MIAC meet on Saturday? The answer was no. Exactly 4 teams (3 men - St. Thomas, Hamline and Bethel plus the St. Thomas women) ran times that provisionally qualified them for DIII Nationals.
After seven weeks of Yes/No, there are four contestants tied for first place with six points: Gloria Jansen, Jessie Schoen, Toby Hatlevig and Chad Bjugan. Two contestants are in the midst of a hot streak - Toby Hatlevig and Mike Mason have answered correctly in each of the last five weeks.
The Pick Ten standings show Jake Marotz in the lead with 45 points. For all the results, please visit DtB Fantasy Corner.
