Yes/No: Will Henderson Break 25 Seconds?
The University of Minnesota will host two meets this weekend starting with the men's Snowshoe Open tonight. The women will follow with the Parents' Day Open on Saturday. These meets offer a good blend of the top talent from local Division II and III schools competing against the Gophers as well as some top-notch unattached athletes.Minnesota State, Mankato will bring its nationally ranked women's squad to Minneapolis on Saturday. The #13 Mavericks are led by sprinter Brittany Henderson and she is the focus of the yes/no question this week:
Y/N: Will Brittany Henderson run faster than 25.00 in the 200 meters at the U of M on Saturday?
Brittany Henderson is a five-time D2 All-American who has run as fast as 23.61 outdoors in the 200 meters. Indoors, Henderson is an All-American in the 200 and ran 24.71 on the oversized track at Iowa State last week. In that race, Henderson finished just 1/100th of a second behind Golden Gopher star Kylie Peterson.
To play our game, simply type "yes" or "no" into the subject line of an e-mail and send it to us at DtBFantasy [AT] gmail [DOT] com before 2:00 P.M. CST, Saturday, February 20th. Please put your answer in the subject line of the e-mail and make sure your full name appears somewhere in the e-mail. We will continue to offer a bonus for participants making their debut in Yes/No - a correct answer will be worth two points for any first-time players.
My answer: Yes
The question last week was: "Will three or more Team USA Minnesota athletes (men and women) finish in the top six in their respective races?" The correct answer was no - Patrick Smyth was the lone Team USA MN runner in the top six. Thirteen contestants answered correctly and there are now five players tied for first place: Jesse Schoen, Gloria Jansen, Chad Bjugan, Rachel Karel and Toby Hatlevig.
To see these results, please visit DtBFantasy Corner.
Good luck and thanks for playing Yes/No on DtB!

The Miles' Lists: High Jump
Three-time MSHSL Class AA high jump champion Derek Jerde of Chaska tops the 2009 list at 6-10, a mark that puts him in a nine-way tie for the 13th-best clearance in Minnesota prep history.
It's interesting to note that, despite all of Jerde's success in the event, he doesn't hold the Chaska High School record. The honor belongs to Jon Markuson who cleared 7-1 in 1993, tying him with Rochester John Marshall's Rod Raver for the the top mark all-time.

Smyth Makes USA's World Cross Team
The Notre Dame University alum finished runner-up to Dathan Ritzenhein in the senior men's race at Saturday's USA Cross Country Championships in Spokane, Washington. Smyth clocked 34:52 in the six-lap, 12K race, 18 seconds behind Ritzenhein.
The top six finishers in the race earned the right to represent the USA at World Cross on March 28. Smyth made his first-ever World Cross team with the efforet -- indeed, he was running in his first USA Cross Country Championship.
Apart from Smyth (pictured, leading Ritzenehin, left, and Bauhs), it was a day of near-misses for Team USA athletes in Spokane. In the senior men's race, USA Half Marathon champion Antonio Vega finished 8th overall in 35:41. Teammate Matt Gabrielson, a member of three World Cross squads in his career, was 10th in 35:57.
Find full senior men's results HERE.
Brown Just Misses ... In the senior women's 8K race, defending USA Cross Country Champion Emily Brown missed making her third World Cross team by a single place after she finished seventh in 26:55. Team USA Minnesota teammate Katie McGregor was two places back in 27:08.
Olympic 10,000 meter bronze medalist Shalane Flanagan dominated the race, winning by nerly a minute in 25:10.
Team USA Minnesota's Meghan Armstrong was 13th in 27:33.
Find full senior women's results HERE.
Smyth on Smyth ... Team USA Minnesota's Smyth offered the following thoughts on his race in a Team USA Minnesota news release:
"The race plan was definitely to get up there and push," Smyth said. "I was feeling good and wanted to get the field strung out early. As for how the race played out, I was convinced I'd be ready to cover any move Ritz [Dathan Ritzenhein] or Bauhs [Scott Bauhs who was third] threw in once the three of us had broken away. But the two small consecutive uphills on the course got progressively more difficult for me in the latter laps. Ritz perceptively sensed this and made a very aggressive move on the penultimate lap's uphill portion. After that, I just tried to continue to compete and to break Bauhs."
"I thought the conditions were near perfect for cross country," Smyth said of the clear-skied, 50-degree race-day. "There was a bit of a headwind, but the footing and temperature were perfect. The course was both runner and spectator friendly in my opinion with some nice scenery to boot. It was great to see another strong finish from all the Team USA Minnesota athletes, particularly the men with a 2-8-10 finish."
Video Coverage ... The ubiquitous folks from Flotrack where on hand in Spokane. You can find coverage of the races and pre- and post-race interviews with athletes HERE.

Emily Brown Interview
Yes/No: How Many World Cross Qualifiers?
As always, Team USA Minnesota will figure prominently in the qualification process for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. In the USA Cross Country Championship on Saturday, the top six senior athletes for both men and women will qualify for World Cross in Poland on March 28th. Team USA MN will send six athletes to Spokane with designs on grabbing as many spots on the U.S. team as possible.Y/N: Will three or more Team USA Minnesota athletes (men and women) finish in the top six in their respective races?
For the women, Katie McGregor has qualified for six world cross country teams. Emily Brown is the defending XC champion and finished 3rd in 2008. Meghan Armstrong finished 12th in the 2009 edition of the USATF XC meet.
On the men's side, Matt Gabrielson has qualified for three world cross country teams. Antonio Vega recently won the USA half marathon championships with teammate Patrick Smyth 2nd.
USATF previews the XC meet HERE.
To play our game, simply type "yes" or "no" into the subject line of an e-mail and send it to us at DtBFantasy [AT] gmail [DOT] com before 3:00 P.M. CST, Saturday, February 13th. Please put your answer in the subject line of the e-mail and make sure your full name appears somewhere in the e-mail. We will continue to offer a bonus for participants making their debut in Yes/No - a correct answer will be worth two points for any first-time players.
My answer: No
The question last week was: "Will William Leer beat Garrett Heath in the mile at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games on Saturday?" The correct answer was yes - Lear finished second in a P.R. 3:55.66. Heath also ran well - 5th place in 3:57.34. Thirty contestants answered correctly and there are now only two with perfect scores. Jesse Schoen and Gloria Jansen are in first place with four points. Hot on their heels are eleven contestants with three points.
To see these results, please visit DtBFantasy Corner.
Good luck and thanks for playing Yes/No on DtB!

Antonio Vega to Headline Grandma's Event
Antonio Vega, the reigning USA Half Marathon champion, will be the featured speaker at the Gearing Up for Grandma's pre-race seminar on Saturday, March 6 in Duluth, race organizers announced yesterday. The 26-year-old University of Minnesota alum captured USA Half Marathon title last month in Houston in a personal best time of 1:01:54. Vega will vie for another national championship on Saturday in Spokane, Washington, at the 2010 USA Cross Country Championships.
Also appearing at Gearing Up for Grandma’s is Duluth resident and former College of St. Scholastica standout Jen Houck.
