Meet of Saints Final MIAC Tune-Up; Unsaintly Meet Results


Saint John's hosts the final tune-up before the May 10-11 MIAC Outdoor Championships, the annual Meet of Saints, Sunday, May 5. Throwing events are scheduled for 11:30 a.m., followed by running events at noon. The meet was originally scheduled for May 4 but moved was moved due to poor weather.

Saint John's tallied seven top-eight finishes in a deep field at the Gustavus Adolphus “Drake Alternative” on April 27 in St. Peter. Team scores were not calculated. Sophomore Nick Welshons(Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) tied for fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.93 meters and senior Eric Mann (Woodbury, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) crossed the finish line in fourth in the 800 meters (1:57.60).
Senior Brady O'Brien (Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels) would have finished at least fourth with a distance of 13.20 meters in the triple jump but scratched his final two jumps. Sophomore Jake Lammi (Marine on St. Croix, Minn./Stillwater Area) claimed sixth, second among Division III participants, with a time of 49.83 in the 400 meters. Junior Patrick Means(Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) and Lammi finished seventh (22.58) and eighth (22.63) in the 200-meter dash, respectively. Sophomore David Kahat (Lino Lakes, Minn./Mounds View) and freshman Alex Ukkelberg(Clitherall, Minn./Ottertail Central) claimed sixth (48.74 meters) and seventh (47.41 meters) in the javelin.

Meanwhile in Des Moines, Iowa, the Johnnies' distance medley relay, which consists of seniors Kevin Horton (400 meters; Eagan, Minn.) andRuairi Moynihan (1,600 meters; Fargo, N.D./South), sophomore Kyle Rossow (800 meters; St. Louis Park, Minn./Hopkins) and freshmanThomas Feichtinger (1,200 meters; Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine), finished ninth out of 21 teams at the Drake Relays with a time of 10:08.35.

LAST YEAR'S MEET: Saint John's won six events and totaled 30 top-five finishes at the Meet of Saints, the annual triangular against St. Olaf and St. Thomas last May 5 in St. Paul. Horton won both the 100- (11.03) and 200-meter dashes (22.30) with season-best times. Junior Jack Elsnes(Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) finished fourth in the 100 meters (11.28). O'Brien led the collegiate student-athletes with a leap of 12.94 meters in the triple jump. Wade Powers '12 and junior Brian Vargason(Owatonna, Minn.) tied for the shot-put crown with a toss of 14.03 meters each. Sophomore Ben Kuhr (Burnsville, Minn./Lakeville South) and senior Joe Donner (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine) followed in third (13.95 meters) and fourth (13.81 meters), respectively. Powers and senior Jack Hedlund (St. Augusta, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) finished 2 (46.71 meters)-3 (43.69 meters) in the hammer throw. Calascione won the javelin throw for the third time in as many meets with a distance of 48.40 meters. The Johnnies' 4x100-meter relay finished second, 0.20 behind the Tommies.
