MSU Mankato's Chris Reed a Triple All American and Shot Put National Champ

Junior thrower Chris Reed threw of 65’7” at the NCAA DII Championships Saturday to  win the shot put . The toss was a  new MSU record in the event, surpassing Reed's previous mark of 62’.5” he set in 2012.  Reed becomes is the fifth Maverick to win a national championship in an outdoor event, and the first since Jim Dilling won the high jump in 2007. He is also the first Maverick to win a national title in the shot put.

Reed has three All-American honors (discus, hammer throw, shot put), while establishing new school records in both the hammer throw and the shot put. Reed is only the second Maverick to earn three All-American honors in a single championship and the first since Moo Muhammad dating back to the 1989 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships where he finished in the top eight in the long jump, 100 and 200 meters.


Reed was also an offensive lineman on the MSU Mankato football team, who were 13-1 this season losing in the NCAA DII semifinals to eventual national champion Valdosta State.
