The University of Minnesota men's track team dropped two places in the USTFCCCA NCAA DI rankings this week to 24th despite beating the two top ranked teams last weekend. While this seems counter intuitive, the reason this happens is that the rankings are not based on team event results, but rather on the performances of individual athletes. This reflects the fact that a team's top performers, those who qualify and compete in the NCAA Championships, determine how the team title is determined. So each team in the rankings gets a score based on the performances of the top individuals on the team.
You can see that by looking at the individual team rankings HERE that list the team members and their top performances and tallies that to give each team a total point score that is used to rank each team in the weekly standings HERE. Minnesota Daily story on the men's and women's results from last weekend is HERE.
The emphasis on individual performance can also be seen in the DII rankings where the Minnesota State Mankato men, and U-Mary and Winona State women fell out of the top 25 listed HERE. The DII team listings with each individual is HERE.
The St. Thomas women dropped two places to 15th in the DIII rankings, while Concordia Moorhead moved up four places to 25th. Full list is HERE.
