NSIC Updates

Some updates of what's been happening in the NSIC.
University of Mary
Men Track: The University of Mary men’s track & field teams were idle last weekend when cold and snowy weather forced the cancellation of the North Dakota State meet in Fargo, ND. This week the Marauders are scheduled to compete at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, CA, on April 18-20, the Long Beach Invitational in Long Beach, CA, on April 20, and the Dickinson State Blue Hawk Classic (April 19)… Among Northern Sun competitors, senior Brent Peltz currently owns the top throw in the javelin (187' 6"). Senior Thomas Hartwell leads in the triple jump (44' 4") and is third in the triple jump. Another senior, Chase Dixon, is second in both the 110 hurdles (14.83) and 400 hurdles (53.88).


Women Track:  The University of Mary women’s track & field team was sidelined by weather when NDSU cancelled its meet. This week the Marauders are scheduled to compete at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, CA, on April 18-20, the Long Beach Invitational in Long Beach, CA, on April 20, and the Dickinson State Blue Hawk Classic (April 19)… 


Kathryn Stewart owns the fastest times in the Northern Sun in the 200 (24.12) and the 400(54.12). Dakota Wolf leads the 800 meter run (2:14.27). Kayla Carlson is second in both the 800 and 1,500. Jennifer Agnew is tops in the 5K (17.24.72). Janet Johnson is first in the 100 meter hurdles (14.36). Megan Jenkins claims the top clocking in the 400 hurdles (1:02.00). In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Alicia Nehl is tops (11:16.62). Melissa Walker sits atop the leader board in both the triple jump (38' 2") and the long jump (19'.75"). Freshman Kayla Cummings leads in the javelin (130' 2 ").
 
Minnesota Duluth
Women Track: Amelia Maher , a sophomore from Sauk Center,  took top honors in both the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.20) and the high jump (5’-05.25’) 
at the Warrior Open in Winona.  Senior Rebecca Lee won  the 100-meter hurdles(15.63), and sophomore Hannah Jocelyn ran 11:55.37 in first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Women Field: Chanel Miller ( Burnsville) set a school record in her first heptathlon of 2013. Miller, the reigning Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference indoor pentathlon champion, scored 4,789 points, 32 points more than the previous UMD mark she set last May at the NSIC Championships and 790 points more than meet runner up Dani Larson of St. Olaf College. 


Men Track/Field: The Tom Cat Open was scheduled to be the University of Minnesota Duluth’s second meet of the 2013 men’s outdoor track and field season, but unseasonably cold and winter-like weather Saturday prompted the host school, the University of St. Thomas, to move that event indoors into the Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex.


The Bulldogs produced one individual champion in sophomore Dan Nielsen, who on the 5K in 15:19.14 -- just under two seconds ahead of runner up and UMD teammate Ryan Eason (15:20.86). Junior Cole Toepfer placed second in the 1,500(3:59.78) while fellow team tri-captain Ben Niemann (long jump; 21’) and senior Matt Molde (pole vault; 14’9”) took third in their respective events. UMD’s other top-four finish came from sophomore Scott Urban, whose 1:58.16 clocking in the 800 placed him fourth.


UMD will next compete in the the annual Carleton College Relays on Saturday (April 20) in Northfield, Minn. The Twin Ports Open, which was slated for this Tuesday at James S. Malosky Stadium, has been bumped back one week to April 23.

Minnesota State Mankato
Minnesota State Mankato had a very strong performance at the Tom Cat Open on Saturday. All four Mavericks that competed in the meet took first-place in their events. The Mavericks will travel to California April 18th-20th to take part in the Mt. Sac Relays.


Men Field:  In the high jump junior Keyvan Rudd had a leap of 2.13-meters and took first-place. Senior Dan Novak took the top spot in the pole vault with a vault of 4.95-meters. Novak provisionally qualified earlier this year in the event with a vault of 5.01-meters.


Men Track: Junior Carmono Lane took first-place in both the 60(6.99) and the 200(22.14). Freshman Devin Allbaugh took the top spot in the 1500(3:58.71).


Women Field: Freshman Faryn Wirkus took first place in the pole vault at the Tom Cat Open in St. Paul as the Mavericks pole vaulters and high jumpers competed at the event.  Wirkus, who was a qualifier in the pole vault at the Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships won, clearing 3.55m. Junior Laura Chopp took sixth place in the pole vault (3.10m).

MSU Moorhead
The MSUM men’s track team’s competition at the Lyle Hokanson Inviational was canceled and will not be rescheduled. MSUM will send athletes to the Mt. Sac Relays next weekend in Walnut, Calif.


St. Cloud State
The St. Cloud State Track & Field team was set to compete in their second weekend of the outdoor season but due to winter weather conditions the Huskies pulled out of their meets. The Huskies were to compete in the St. John’s Multi and the Concordia-St. Paul Open.  St. Cloud State will be back in action on April 20 as they travel to Northern State University for a dual meet against the NSU Wolves.


Winona State
Women Track: Sarah Finley (Sr, Spring Grove, IL) won the 100 meters in 12.45 and lead off the Warriors’ winning 4x100 meter relay.  She also finished third in the 200 at the Warrior Women’s Open.


Women Field: Hannah Mueller (So, Cambridge, MN) won the Long Jump at the Warrior Women’s Open with a School Record, NCAA II Provisional jump of 5.74m (18’ 10”). The Warriors will compete in the Phil Esten Challenge at UW-La Crosse on Friday.
