Gopher, St. Thomas Women Dominate Tomcat Invitational

The University of Minnesota women's track and field team members finished first in five events, while the St. Thomas women's track and field team had 15 top-five finishes at Saturday's Tomcat Invite. The non-team scored competition was moved indoors into the Anderson Athletics and Recreation Complex (AARC) due to snowy fields and cold weather.

New roster addition and former Gopher women's basketball player Katie Loberg made a splash in her first meet since high school by winning the high jump with a clearance of 5'6". Her jump is the highest for a Gopher this season. Minnesota swept the distance events as well.

Anne Ferguson won the 800 with a personal-best time of 2:15.60. A trio of Gophers claimed third through fifth:  Jilian Johnson, Andie Zeman, and Stacey Sovatek.  A clean sweep of the top five came in the 1,500-meter run with Laura Docherty leading the charge. Katie Moraczewski and Kelli Budd rounded out the top three as Liz Berkhoktz and Kaila Urick finished the top-five places. Rachel Edwards took first in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:27.67 as Taylor Mikkalson followed closely to acquire second.


The Gophers' final first-place came in the 5K with Missa Varpness running17:19.58.  Rachel Drake and Rebecca Rethwisch took third and fourth, respectively.



Emily Van Heel won the triple jump (36' 7.75") and took second in the 60(8.19). UST won the 4x400 relay (4:06.16). Kayla Goeman took second in the 800 (2:16.24). Erik Tipp placed second in the 200 (25.83). Angela Tipp(26.37) placed third.

Mallory Burnham placed fourth in the 60 hurdles (8.24). Christina Rozeske finished fourth in the 200 (26.69), fifth in the long jump (16-0 1-4) and fifth in the 60 dash (8.33).
In the 3,000, Melissa Engstrom took fourth (11:15.18), Annie Joslyn was fifth (11:28.20) and Rachel Roth placed sixth (11:29.56).

Jackie Destache finished fifth in the 400 (63.68). Katie Ryan took fifth in the 60 hurdles (8.68). Allie Voight took fifth in the shot put (30-11).Megan Terukina placed sixth in the 800 (2:19.95). Morgan Lyons and Erin Daugherty shared sixth in the high jump (4' 7"). Anna Fry was seventh in the 400 (27.51). Maggie Harris placed seventh in the 400 (65.36). Meredith Rothstein took seventh in the 60 hurdles (8.70).
