Stanford Invite Friday Results

Field event athletes led the way for the Gopher men at the Stanford Invitational on Friday in Palo Alto. Sophomore Justin Barber won the collegiate hammer throw with a winning throw of 56.76m (186' 3"). Zach Siegmeier finished second in the pole vault, clearing 5.25m (17' 2.75"), the same height as winner John Prader of  Cal Poly, who won on the basis of fewer misses. Oladipo Fagbemi was runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 7.31m(23' 11.75"). Sam Kettenhofen finished seventh with a 7.13m (23' 4.75") jump.

Barber also finished fifth in the invitational discus with a 54.55m (179') toss. Mark Jennings(53.34m/175') and Dominique Howard(52.95/173'9") finished seventh and eighth in the event, respectively. In the collegiate discus throw, Logan Hussung finished fifth with a throw of 48.25m (158' 4 ") while Luke Johnson came in seventh at 47.85m (157'). Logan Connors finished seventh in the javelin throw with a toss of 60.58m  (198' 9"). The Gophers also picked up a fourth-place finish from Jacob Capek(47.32) in the 400. Teammates Kevin Bradley(48.91) and John Holton(49.13)were 16th  and 20th, respectively.

In the distance events, Team USA Minnesota's Jamie Cheever was 12th in the first heat of the women's 5K in 15:48.74. Her teammate, McKenzie Melander,  was tenth in the first heat of the women's 10K in 33:18.89; University of Minnesota's Laura Docherty was 15th in 33:24.93(a PR); and Team USA Minnesota's Meghan Peyton finished 19th in 33:52.16.  Jon Peterson of Team USA Minnesota finished 27th in the first heat of the 10K in 29:36.60.  The Air Force's Jeremy Drenckhahn was 24th in the first heat of the 5K in 14:26.10. U of M's Adam Zutz was 18th in heat five of the 5K in 14:41.81.  The Gopher's Katie Moraczewski ran a personal best of 10:23.55 in the steeplechase, beating her best time by nearly five seconds.  In the men's steeple, Gopher Derek Storkel was ninth in 9:04.32 in section 2. In section 4 of the women's 5K gopher Liz Berkholtz was third in 16:42.59 and Kelli Budd was 18th in 17:18.66.  U of M's Travis Burkstrand was fourth in the third heat of the 1,500 in 3:45.  Teammate Marcus Paulson was eighth in the second heat of the 1,500 in 3:47.02, and the Gopher's  Nick Hutton was tenth in the first heat in 3:48.97.

Docherty broke former Gopher Eileen Donaghy’s 10,000-meter record of 33:31.96, which was set in 1988. Donaghy’s record time was the second oldest Minnesota outdoor record behind Jane Oas’ 200-meter dash record set in 1976.
