Gopher Men Sweep Big Ten Athlete of the Week Honors

Gopher men swept the first Big Ten weekly awards of the season this week.  Quentin Mege was selected as Big Ten Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week after besting his own school record and posting the top performance in the nation this season in the hammer throw. The senior from Chelles, France threw 67.49m (221' 5".) at the Baldy Castillo Invitational on Friday in Tempe, AZ. Mege topped his previous school record of 67.08 meters that he set in while winning  the 2012 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships. 

Alex Brend was awarded Minnesota’s first Big Ten Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honor since May 6, 2009 (Hassan Mead) for his performance in the 800 meters. The Hawthorn Woods, IL, native won the event at the Baldy Castillo Invitational with a meet-best time of 1:51.88 on Saturday, posting the best time in the Big Ten, and the tenth best performance in the nation so far this season.
