Top Field Races for US 10-Mile Championshps and $10,000 Equalizer Bonus

A deep men’s field and a women’s race led by three Olympians will vie  for the USA Men’s and Women’s 10 Mile Championships at Sunday’s Medtronic TC 10 Mile.

Defending men’s champion Mo Trafeh of Duarte, CA returns, as does two-time Medtronic TC 10 Mile champion Abdi Abdirahman of Tucson, AZ, who holds the event record of 46:35 set in 2009. Rounding out the men's field are former 10,000-meter American record holder Chris Solinsky of Portland, OR, who is competing in his first USA road racing championship, Ben True of Portland, ME, last year’s USA 10 Mile runner-up and the recently crowned USA 5K champ Andrew Carlson of St. Paul, a member of Team USA Minnesota who finished sixth at the Olympic Trials Marathon in January.

Contenders for the women’s title include three members of the US’s London Olympics squad:  Kara Goucher of Portland, OR, a Duluth native who holds the Medtronic TC 10 Mile women’s course record of 53:16; Janet Bawcom of Rome, GA., the defending Medtronic TC 10 Mile women’s champ, and Julie Culley, Annandale, NJ, last year’s runner-up.  Expected to be in contention for the top places are Molly Pritz, the runner up at last month’s USA 20K Championship and Meghan Peyton of Team USA Minnesota, who finished sixth in the 2011 race.

In addition to a pair of $12,000 US champions’ prizes, the race will feature a $10,000 Equalizer Bonus for the first US Champion – male or female – to cross the finish line at the State Capitol.  The women will leave the downtown Minneapolis start ahead of the men.  The size of the head-start will be announced at the Athlete News Conference on Friday, October 5.

A field of 8,500 runners will compete in the Medtronic TC 10 Mile which gets underway at 7:03 AM Sunday.  The race is held in conjuction with the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon which starts at 8:00 AM.
