Yes/No: Six All-Time State Meet Records?

The weekend of the Minnesota State High School League Track and Field Championships is always a great time to be a track and field fan.  This year, besides the State Meet at Hamline University, there is also the NCAA Championships held in Des Moines and a Diamond League event in New York.  But we will keep an eye on the MSHSL meet with the Yes/No question this week.

It's safe to say that all of the high school athletes competing in the state meet have had impressive seasons.  But we would like to know how many will actually rewrite the record books this weekend.

Here's the question of the week...

Yes/No: Will six or more All-Time State Meet records be broken at the MSHSL meet on Friday and Saturday?

The All-Time State Meet records are defined as the best mark at a State Meet in either Class AA and Class A.  On the heat sheets, it is the record written as "MN All Time."  We are not asking about the separate Class AA and Class A records.  Nor are we asking about the Minnesota All-Time Best marks that can occur anytime during the season.  Lastly, we will not include wheelchair events, added this year, for the purpose of this contest.

Some notable athletes with the potential to break records include All-Time Minnesota High School record-holders RJ Alowonle in the 300-meter hurdles, Thomas Anderson in the shot put, Jessica January in the 100-meter hurdles, and Maggie Ewen in the discus.

Last week's question was: Will Gabriele Anderson run faster than 4:07.00 at the Prefontaine Meet on Friday? It was tight, but the answer was yes.  Gabriele Anderson ran sub 4:07 for the second race in a row.  This time it was 4:06.77, ahead of World Championship bronze medalist Shannon Rowbury.  Thirty-one players answered correctly this week.  Jim Glazer and Ryan Aylesworth continue to lead and now have twelve points.

Programming Note:  Down the Backstretch will again be on-site at the MSHSL State Meet tomorrow and Saturday.  This year, the MSHSL plans to post live results on its web-site during the competition.  Since the live results will make our usual live-text coverage of the meet largely redundant, we plan, instead, to post photos and audio interviews from the meet, most likely following each separate Class AA and Class A session.
