Remembering the 1982 Boston Marathon

As entrants in this morning's Boston Marathon face the daunting task of traversing Boston's historic 26.2-mile course on what is forecast to be a very warm day, we harken back 30 years to one of the most memorable Boston Marathon's in it 116-year history: the race's 1982 edition, when Minnesota's Dick Beardsley ran stride-for-stride with Alberto Salazar in the contest dubbed the Duel in the Sun.

Above, is some video of the 1982 television broadcast of the race.

Also, check out THIS Boston Herald remembrance of the race.

Closer to home, the Duluth News-Tribune's Kevin Pates just wrote THIS story about the 1982 contest.

You can watch today's Boston Marathon -- which features former Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon men's champions Jason Hartman and Sergio Reyes and three-time Grandma's Marathon women's winner Mary Akor -- HERE, on Universal Sports.

A More Recent Yesterday ... On Sunday, Team USA Minnesota's Gabriele Anderson finished 3rd in the BAA Invitational Mile, held on the streets near the Boston Marathon finish line. The Perham High School and University of Minnesota alum clocked 4;46.3 on the three-lap course.

Morgan Uceny won the women's race in 4:43.8. Find complete BAA Invitational Mile results HERE.

Anderson's Team USA Minnesota teammate Andrew Carlson finished 14th in the BAA 5K, also held yesterday. Carlson clocked 14:01 for the distance.

  1. We shouldn't forget about the 1975 Boston Marathon when another Minnesota star was runner-up to a Boston legend ...

  2. I always thought it was a bittersweet day for both men--though Salazar did make the '84 Olympic team--neither was ever "the same" again after that day.
