In a season-opening contest between Minnesota's #1 and #2-ranked boys' Class AA high school teams, #1 Stillwater topped defending MSHSL Class AA champions Wayzata, ranked #2, to win the Columbus Catholic Invitational in Marshfield, Wisconsin on Saturday.
Stillwater scored 45 points in the 26-team invitational, Wayzata finished second with 60, La Crosse Logan was third with 110.
Wayzata's Josh Thorson won the individual race, clocking 15:53 over the 5k course where 10,000-meter American Record-holder Chris Solinsky holds the course record with the 15:36 he ran in 2001 as a Stevens Point Area Senior High student.
Stillwater earned its victory with a well-knit top-5, led by Tom Linner, which placed 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, and 17th in the race. Wayzata's scorers finished 1st, 5th, 14th, 16th, and 25th.
The #7-ranked Wayzata girls' won their division of the meet, scoring 57 points to top runner-up River Falls which tallied 90. Un-ranked White Bear Lake was 5th in the meet with 165.

On Friday, Class AA's #2-ranked Lakeville South girls' won the Dakota Classic, HERE.
Also on Friday, Rosemount, Class AA's #3-ranked boys squad, won its own Irish Invitational 45-74 over runner-up #12 White Bear Lake. In girls' action at the meet, #6 Prior Lake topped un-ranked Stillwater 60-107.
