The question hovering over the 2011 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which get underway in earnest today in St. Paul, is can St. Thomas' twin team title streaks extend for yet another year?
When the MIAC takes to St. Thomas' sparkling new indoor facility this afternoon, the Tommie men's perfect run of 26 MIAC indoor titles -- every title ever awarded by the conference -- and the Tommie women's streak of 11-straight wins will be in contention.
Last year, the Tommie men survived Hamline's challenge to their dominance with a seven-point 163-156 win. The St. Paul rivals both enter strong teams this year. The Tommie men are ranked #4 in the Central Region of NCAA Division III; Hamline is ranked #5.
The Tommie women, who scored a 28-point victory over Gustavus at MIAC Indoor last year, face legitimate challenges from the Gusties, St. Benedict's, and Hamline this year. The Gusties are currently ranked #20 in D3 and #5 in the Central Region. St. Thomas is two spots back in the region at #7 and Saint Benedict is #8.
