Heading into this weekend's Big Ten Indoor Championships, three University of Minnesota stars will enter the competitions in Champaign, Illinois (men) and West Lafayette, Indiana (women) as the conference's Athletes of the Week.
Micah Hegerle, the sophomore throwing star from Kasson-Mantorville, was named the Big Ten's Field Event Athlete of the Week after marking a school record 71-3 1/2 in the weight throw at Friday night's Snowshoe Open at the U of M Fieldhouse.
Hegerle’s throw is the top mark in the Big Ten this season and ranks him #2 in the nation.
Ryan Todhunter, a Gopher hurdler from Grand Forks, North Dakota, earned Big Ten Track Event Athlete of the Week honors after his 60-meter hurdles victory on Friday in 8.00. The sophomore moves up to #7 in the Big Ten standings heading into conference. In Gopher history, Todhunter’s time ties him for #3 on the all-time.
Gopher pole vaulter Samantha Sonnenberg earned her second consecutive Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Week honor after clearing a season-best 13-11 1/4 to win the U of M's Parents’ Day Open on Saturday.
The Gopher All-American owns the top vault in the Big Ten this season.
