Gopher Teams in 2nd at Big Ten Indoors

The University of Minnesota men's and women's track and field teams are both in second place heading into today's final day of competition at their respective Big Ten Indoor Championships.

In Champaign, Illinois, the Gopher men, the two-time defending Big Ten indoor champions, trail only Ohio State in the team standings. The Buckeyes have scored 34 points so far, the Gopher have 30, Indiana has tallied 28.5.

The Gopher men's DMR of Nick Hutton, Harun Abda, Travis Burkstrand and Ben Blankenship won the Big Ten title yesterday in 9:50.58.

The Gopher women find themselves in second place, with 39 points, behind Indiana at 46 points. Hosts Purdue are currently third with 31.

On Saturday, the Gophers' Samantha Sonnenberg cleared 13-7 1/4 to win her first career Big Ten pole vault crown. She was the runner-up in each of the last two Big Ten Indoor Championships.

USA Championships ... Amanda Smock finished runner-up in the women's triple jump at the USA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico yesterday. The Melrose native hopped, stepped, and jumped 44-8 3/4.

Minnesota State, Mankato alumnus Jim Dilling finished 5th in the high jump at 7-1.

Laura Januszewski and Heather Kampf both advanced to today's 800m finals. Januszewski won her prelim heat in 2:08.98; Kampf took third in her heat in 2:04.73.
