The fond hopes that a pair of Minnesotans might win the elite titles at yesterday's Grandma's Minnesota Mile was put to rest by a record-setting international duo.Kenya's Aron Rono and Canada's Carmen Douma-Hussar topped deep fields that included strong Minnesota contenders to win the race down Duluth's Superior Street.
Rono ran 3:58.18 to top Winona native Garrett Heath in the men's race, while Douma-Hussar ran 4:35.60 to outrun Amy Mortimer of Leonardville, Kansas.
Rono beat the course record of 3:59.69 held by Haran Lagat. Fellow Kenyan Felix Kiboiywo finished third in 3;59.33.
Minnetonka native Will Leer finished 5th in 4:00:13.
Douma-Hussar smashed Carrie Vickers event record of 4:40.99. Team USA Minnesota's Heather Dorniden finished third in the race in 4;39.40. Right behind her was teammate and fellow Golden Gopher alum Gabriele Anderson in 4:42.20.
