It's now 26 and counting ...
In the closest team finish in the meet's history, the University of St. Thomas men extended their perfect run at the MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships to 26-straight victories with a 163 to 156 win over cross-St. Paul rivals Hamline.
The Tommie's are now a mind-boggling 26 for 26 at the meet, which began in 1985.
St. Thomas won the meet with only three individual titles, but was powered by 17 athletes scoring points in 19 of the meet's 20 events.
Matt Griswold won the pentathlon, Mike Hutton won the 1000 meters, and Eyo Ekpo won the triple jump for the team.
With two running events (3000m, 4 x 400m) left to run and one field event still ongoing (triple jump), Hamline led the meet 134-133. The teams scored equal points in the triple jump, but Steve Mathre's team outscored the Pipers by a critical six point in the 3000m.
Needing only to finish within two places of Hamline in the culminating 4 x 400m relay, the Tommie squad, which finished second, beat Hamline by a place to sieze the title.
Tommie Women Win 11th-Straight ... The University of St. Thomas women won their 11th-straight MIAC Indoor Crown, and the program's 23rd indoor title overall.
As in the men's meet, the team battle was tight with three events remaining, with Joe Sweeney's team holding a 136-130 lead over Gustavus. The Tommies out-scored the Gusties 22-0 in the 200m, 3000m, and 4 x 400m relay to seal their crown.
