Garrett Heath advanced to the finals of the 1500 meters at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar today.
The Winona High School and Stanford University alum finished 3rd in his preliminary heat, running a PR 3:39.25. The top two finishers in each of three heats advanced automatically. Heath was the fastest of three time-qualifiers to Saturday's final.
An IAAF recap of the event, HERE, said Heath launched a "do or die" sprint with 150m to go in order to secure third place.
Fellow Minnesota native Will Leer finished 4th in a separate heat of the event in 3:42.16, but did not advance.
Iguider Abdalaati of Morocco, the 5th-place finisher at 1500m in the Beijing Olympics, was the fastest of today's qualifiers, running 3:37.14 to win Heath's heat.

Former Gopher Ibrahim Kabia advanced through the first round in the men's 60m as well, competing for Sierra Leone.
