Kaylie Clark Earns All-American Status

by Stephen Batcher, UMM sports information director

Kaylie Clark, Garden Plain, Kansas, not only set her personal best in the biggest meet of her career, but also became an All-American. Clark threw  43.07m to take sixth place in the javelin at the NCAA DIII Championships last weekend. She also broke her own school record.

The two-sport athlete becomes the third Morris athlete to earn All-American status in the 2012-13 school year. Brendon Foss , Hancock, earned College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) All-American status in football, and Linda Keller, Hawick, was an NCAA All-American in cross country last fall. Basketball player Emily Mehr , Aitkin, was also a DIII  Fifth Team All-American.

More Honors for Quentin Mege

Gopher men's hammer thrower Quentin Mege, a  recent Academic All-Big selection was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team for the second consecutive year on Thursday. A native of Chelles, France, Mege's exploits in the classroom rival his athletic achievements as the senior has a 3.92 grade point average as an undergraduate with a mechanical engineering degree who has enrolled in graduate school in his final season with the Maroon and Gold. Mege also garnered Academic All-District honors in 2012 and added Capital One Academic All-American and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar designations following the season.

The Gophers' hammer thrower opened the 2013 outdoor season by re-setting his own school record with a throw of 221'5" at the Baldy Castillo Invitational - the mark stands as the best throw in the Big Ten this season and the seventh best performance in the nation.

The senior was hampered for most of the season by a broken hand, but returned to finish second at the Big Ten Championships behind teammate Micah Hegerle - the duo have now combined for four-straight conference titles with Mege earning Big Ten titles in 2011 and 2012. Mege, a Second Team All-Big Ten selection, qualified for the NCAA West Regionals and finished second with a toss of 217'7" earning  a trip to the NCAA Championships next week in Eugene, OR.

Yes/No: Will Mead get an "A" qualifier at Pre?

The best of the best will show up in Eugene this weekend for the 2013 Prefontaine Classic.  There are too many great athletes to name, but the 10K match-up between 2012 double Olympic Champ Mo Farah and 10000 meter world record holder Kenenisa Bekele is bound to be a duel for the ages.  World record holders Aries Merritt (110 hurdles) and David Rudisha (800 meters) will certainly attract attention, along with high school phenom Mary Cain.

Blending in with all of the Olympic medalists and record holders is a name everyone in Minnesota will recognize.  Hassan Mead has proven that he is at home with the best runners in the United States.  He will compete in the 5000 meters at the Pre Classic.

Mead just missed the "A" qualifying standard for the World Championships in the 5k when he ran 13:15:50 at Stanford in April.  Let us know whether he will hit that mark this weekend...

Yes/No: Will Hassan Mead run 13:15.00 or faster at the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday?

The 5k field is outstanding and features a who's who of American distance runners.  This group includes Galen Rupp, Dathen Ritzenhein, Chris Derrick and Bernard Lagat.  The international portion of this race is top-notch as well.  London bronze-medalist Thomas Longosiwa leads a field that includes three other sub 12:50 runners:  Isiah Koech, John Kipkoech and Yenew Alamirew.

Here are some links for the 2013 Prefontaine Classic:

To play our game, simply type "yes" or "no" into the subject line of an e-mail and send it to us at DtBFantasy [AT] gmail [DOT] com before 2:30 P.M. CDT, Saturday, June 1st.  Please put your answers in the subject line of the e-mail and make sure your full name appears somewhere in the e-mail.  We will offer a bonus for participants making their 2013 debut in Yes/No - a correct answer will be worth two points for anyone who has not played yet this year.

My Answer:  No

Last week's Pick Ten Contest was won by Andrew Nussbaum, scoring 33 points.  He edged out Rachel Karel with 32 points.  In the overall standings -- Mike Henderson has a narrow lead with 125 points.  Rachel Karel is also second in the overall standings and she is at 121.

In the Yes/No Contest, Lori Anne Schwiesow leads with eleven points.  Tied for second place are Mike Henderson and Mary Varney with ten points each.

Melissa Agnew Ends College Career with Another National Title

Melissa Agnew. Photo courtesy of U-Mary
In her final collegiate race for the University of Mary,  senior Melissa Agnew won her third national championship with  her finishing kick, taking  in the 1500 at the 2013 NCAA Women's DII Championships in Pueblo, CO. The 12-time All-American and native of Onamia, MN, took control in the final 150 meters and fought off second place finisher Lisa Ohberg of Cal State Los Angeles by 2.18 seconds in a winning time of 4:28.02.

Slowed by injuries much of the spring, Agnew was the nation's lone automatic qualifier in the 1,500. At the 2013 indoor championships, she won the mile title and led the Marauders Distance Medley Relay team to victory. Since U-Mary moved to NCAA competition in the fall of 2006, Agnew has played a part in all three NSIC team championships.

An interview with Agnew from cross country season is HERE.   Bismark Tribune stories on her are HERE, HERE, and HERE. Agnew says in the last Tribune story that she will be moving to the Twin Cities to continue her education, hoping to become a chiropractor, and that she is applying to become a member of Team USA Minnesota.

MSU Mankato's Chris Reed a Triple All American and Shot Put National Champ

Chris Reed. Photo courtesy of MSU Mankato
Junior thrower Chris Reed threw of 65’7” at the NCAA DII Championships Saturday to  win the shot put . The toss was a  new MSU record in the event, surpassing Reed's previous mark of 62’.5” he set in 2012.  Reed becomes is the fifth Maverick to win a national championship in an outdoor event, and the first since Jim Dilling won the high jump in 2007. He is also the first Maverick to win a national title in the shot put.

Reed has three All-American honors (discus, hammer throw, shot put), while establishing new school records in both the hammer throw and the shot put. Reed is only the second Maverick to earn three All-American honors in a single championship and the first since Moo Muhammad dating back to the 1989 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships where he finished in the top eight in the long jump, 100 and 200 meters.

Reed was also an offensive lineman on the MSU Mankato football team, who were 13-1 this season losing in the NCAA DII semifinals to eventual national champion Valdosta State.
