Yes/No: Carlson Sub-14:00 at Carlsbad 5000?

The Carlsbad 5000 lives up to its billing as the "Worlds Fastest 5K." The race has seen sixteen world records in the twenty-six years of its existence, including both current men's and women's road world records owned by Sammy Kipketer (13:00) and Meseret Defar (14:46).

Team USA-Minnesota's Andrew Carlson is set to toe the line at Carlsbad after a stellar sixth place finish in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in January, his debut marathon. He is running this road 5000 to hone his speed as he prepares for the races on the track in the spring.

So we ask ...

Yes/No: Will Andrew Carlson run faster than 14:00 at the Carlsbad 5000 on Sunday?

Andrew Carlson has run 13:32 for 5000 meters on the track. He will compete in an elite field at Carlsbad featuring Americans Anthony Famiglietti, Craig Miller, and Brandon Bethke. The international portion of the field is even stronger with runners such as Eliud Kipchoge, Tariku Bekele, and Alastair Cragg competing.

In 2011, the winner (Dejen Gebremeskel) ran 13:11 while the top American (Bobby Curtis) ran 13:48 . In 2010, Eliud Kipchoge won the race in 13:11.

To play our game, simply type "yes" or "no" into the subject line of an e-mail and send it to us at DtBFantasy [AT] gmail [DOT] com before 2:00 P.M. CDT, Sunday, April 1st. Please put your answers in the subject line of the e-mail and make sure your full name appears somewhere in the e-mail.

My answer: No

Last week's question was: Will Oladipo Fagbemi triple jump over 50 feet on Saturday at Arizona State? The answer was no. Fagbemi had two fouls in the triple jump and no legal jumps. Only seven people answered correctly this week and Jim Glazer's reign at the top with a perfect score comes to an end. Glazer now shares the top spot with Heather Jelen who also owns eight points. There are seven contestants trailing closely with seven points.

TCM Raises a Half-Million Dollars for Charity

Twin Cities In Motion, the organizers of the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon and a host of other events, channeled more than a half-million dollars to charities in 2011.

Together with its Community Partners and Charity Program teams, the organization raised more than $510,000 through event entry fundraisers, individual donations, and contributions to the Friends of TCM program

Twin Cities In Motion exceeded its 2010 giving total by nearly $175,000.

The majority of money raised came through the efforts of teams participating in the Charity Program. Sixteen charity teams used the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon for fundraising efforts, bringing in nearly $365,000 for their respective causes.

TCM’s own Youth Community Partners were able to raise money through late entry fundraisers, donations given during registration as well as creating a team through the Charity Program. Bolder Options, MIGIZI Communications and the YWCA of Minneapolis work together with TCM to promote health and fitness not only through their youth programs, but through their reach into areas of the Twin Cities most in need of resources.

In addition to monetary donations, goods were donated to TCM’s In-Kind Community Partners, Hand-in-Hand Together, US’Again Clothes Collection System and the Emergency Foodshelf Network.

Carlson, Moen Racing in Roads' Major Leagues

A pair of Team USA Minnesota runners are set to compete in two of American road racing's major league events on Saturday.

U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials surprise Andrew Carlson will be among the elite field at the Carlsbad 5000 in California, while Josh Moen, the fifth-fastest American 10 miler of all-time, will race in the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run in Washington, DC

The Carlsbad 5000 will be Carlson’s first race since finishing sixth at the Marathon Trials in Houston in January where he debuted at 2:11:24. The two-time national champion (15K and 25K) has a 5000 meter track best of 13:32. He is dropping down in distance as part of his preparations to compete in the 10,000 meters on the track this spring, team officials say.

The Carlsbad 5000 is celebrating its 27th year and is billed as the “World’s Fastest 5K” with 16 world records set on the seaside course in the Village of Carlsbad.

Moen will be making his first appearance at the 40th running of the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile. The race is staged on the Washington Monument Grounds, is run on a course marked by the city’s storied cherry blossom trees.

The Team USA Minnesota distance runner has a best in the 10 mile of 46:38, set when he was the runner-up at the USA 10 Mile Championships in 2009.

USATF Minnesota Seeks Ultimate Runners

USA Track and Field Minnesota will host a new long distance running series aimed at determining the state's top runners across all of the sports disciplines, the organization announced today.

The six race Ultimate Runner Series, presented by Lifetime Fitness, will challenge runners on the roads, over the trails, around the track, and in cross country.

The series kicks off April 14th with the USATF Minnesota 10 Mile Individual Championship, held in conjunction with Goldy's Run at the University of Minnesota. Races in the series include a track 5000-meters and a road mile. The series will conclude in November.

Individual prize money will be awarded to open and masters runners at each race. Athletes who compete in all six series races will earn a technical t-shirt, while series winners will earn a jacket.

Find complete details on the series HERE.

Yes/No: Fagbemi Over 50 Feet in Triple Jump?

The University of Minnesota track teams have a tradition of escaping the hard, cold winter that lingers through March by hopping a plane to competitions in refreshingly warm, tropical destinations.

OK, so it's relatively tropical in Minnesota right now. Hey, it's a tradition.

After a long indoor campaign many of the Gopher runners will be taking a break early in the outdoor season, but several others will compete at the Arizona State Invite on Saturday in sunny Tempe, Arizona. One athlete that will be on a busy schedule is jumper Oladipo Fagbemi, competing in both the long jump and triple jump on Saturday.

We will focus on Fagbemi's specialty - the triple jump - with this question...

Yes/No: Will Oladipo Fagbemi triple jump over 50 feet on Saturday at Arizona State?

Fagbemi competed in the triple jump four times during the indoor season. In two meets he jumped further than 50 feet and in two he jumped less than 50. His marks were 50-4, 50-0 1/2, 49-9 1/4, 49-3 3/4. Fagbemi has an all-time best of 51-2 3/4.

Fagbemi has finished as high as third in the triple jump at the Big Ten Championship Meet in his career. He was the 2010 Drake Relays champ in the same event. Fagbemi was also state champion in Wisconsin in both the long jump and triple jump while in high school.

To play our game, simply type "yes" or "no" into the subject line of an e-mail and send it to us at DtBFantasy [AT] gmail [DOT] com before 8:00 P.M. CDT, Saturday, March 24th. Please put your answers in the subject line of the e-mail and make sure your full name appears somewhere in the e-mail.

My answer: Yes

Last week's question was: Will Ralph Maxwell improve on any of his four individual-event marks from the 2011 USA Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships at the 2012 edition of the meet? The answer was yes - Maxwell flew a bit further in his 2012 triple jump. Twenty five people answered correctly this week and the top of the leaderboard did not change. Jim Glazer remains in first place and has eight points.

USA Masters: Maxwell and the Minnesotans

USATF Minnesota masters track and field chair Tom Langenfeld reports on the Minnesota contingent at the USA Masters Indoor Championships held last weekend in Bloomington, Indiana.

Having tried almost every individual track & field event available, Ralph Maxwell turned his attention to a relay challenge in Bloomington—after breaking his own listed M90 world record in the indoor pentathlon, that is.

Now 92, Ralph hoped to put together a 4 x 200m team of four 90-year-olds. He had to settle for three (91, 92 and 94), and one 89-year-old. They ran as an M80-89 team, the age group being determined by the age of the youngest team member. Their time was 3:36.28. Average individual time: 54.1 seconds. Average age: 91.5.

Within the pentathlon, Ralph’s long jump mark was exactly the same as a year ago. His shot put was 6½ inches better and his 1000m was almost 48 seconds better. In all, he took home six medals—gold in the pentathlon (4030 points), high jump (.98m/3’2.50”), long jump (2.39m/7’10.25”), triple jump (5.57m/18’3.50”) and shot put (7.04m/23’1.25”), and silver in the 60m (running 12.55 against his relay teammates).

In all, nine Minnesotans competed in the nationals this year (that I know of), six medaling. In addition to Ralph:

Lance Elliott M41, Edina – second in the M40 mile (4:39.12); third in the 800 (2:05.02).

Robert Jones M49, St. Louis Park – third in the M45 weight throw (12.16m/34’10.75”); fourth in the super weight (7.17/23’6.25”); fifth in the shot put (10.59/34’9”).

Susan Loyd M54, Edina – second in the W50 shot (8.13m/26’8.25”) – a Minnesota age group record; fourth in the 400m (1:12.50; fifth in the 60m (9.53); fifth in the 200m (32.24).

Kathy Haubrich M52, Shakopee – third in the W50 400 m (1:10.22); fifth in the 800m (2:46.05). Also ran on the gold medal W50-59 4x800 club relay team.

Tom Langenfeld M76, Edina – first in the M75 high jump (1.37/4’6”). [Editor's note: the victory is Langenfeld's 14th USA Masters Indoor HJ title and 33rd USA Master HJ title in total.]

Jim Schoffman M58, Fridley – fourth in the M55 400m (1:00.60); fourth in the 200m (27.23).

Michael Soule M60, Wyoming – fourth in the M60 pole vault (2.60m/8’6.25”), seventh in the long jump

Patrick O’Regan M65, Inver Grove Heights – seventh in the M65 800.

A good meet – something over 800 participants according to reports. Indiana University was a friendly host. The meet could have been held outdoors as far as the weather was concerned. Temperatures in the 70s and 80s.
